Kudos on your Yotei summit and ski in challenging conditions. I applaud your foresight in having ski crampons for the final push - a painful omission on my '16 venture to Yotei. Japan powder - who knew? Our 4 person group returned 2/12 from a two week powder-palooza with the first 3 days working off the jet lag at Niseko, Moiwa, and Rusutsu (get the bus/lift ticket combo embarking from Hirafu). Then it was 8 days of guided backcountry including an aborted Yotei attempt due to an inopportune southern-approach-sun-bake that nudged us to find solace on the eastern flanks. Our final days included a rime-grinder from the Tokachidaki summit, surely spurred on by snorting a few sulfur fumes along the way, with a nice deep powder finish; then on to an evening at the Sapporo Winter Festival to take in the building-size snow sculptures and chiseled ice menagerie. The riskiest moment of the trip was negotiating the glassy sidewalks of packed snow as we left our pointy things at the hotel. Your cultural contrast assessment is spot-on (just because no one is pointing out your impolite manners doesn't mean you're a savvy traveler) and sourcing sustenance from "Sevvies" is the way to go. Where else can you get squid chips? And a quality $1.60 machine-mixed latte? But know the word is out as evidenced by the flash mob we encountered there one morning. Once again you nailed the vibe. Thanks for the tour!
