A picture of nature finding ways to keep themselves safe when humans are trying to do the same. It is symbolism. But you are correct, I was confused at first until I watched the video. I guess he is trying to be different than the common sensationalism style of thumbnails.

You failed to mention that Japan sank. Thus the sea walls ended up just that much lower.
@stanleytolle41620 сағат бұрын
One of the problems with sea walls is that a subduction fault pushes up the land on the up side of the fault as strain builds up. When the fault slips during an earthquake this upside land subsidies down. So a ten meter sea wall that subsides 6 meters is really only a 2 meter wall. This is why what seemed like massive seawalls were easily over topped.

They need some art painted on those stark walls. Seems like not allowing building on areas lower than 100 feet would help. It can be a large open park that if flooded, is simple to fix, while the people are safe above 100feet.

Here’s an idea for those affected by tsunami. Dig trenches out at sea close to the shore line or perhaps drill really deep holes into the sea bed. Use some kind of material to prevent erosion and maintain it? Might help! Just an idea and use the built sea walls as a second choice anchor them to the sea bottom! Use different sizes to break up the torrent height of these natural disasters. Just ideas!

I still need to go back to the hotel I stayed in for the Kizuna Project back in 2012. It was on a cliff face and the tsunami had reached all the way to the bottom floor of the hotel. We also helped with some cleanup in what was once a full town, was just rubble and flat land. I'm struggling to remember the actual hotel name and can only remember it being East or North East of Sendai.

My home town on the oregon coast had two seperate summer native village sites there. Both on the river with large hills directly behind each village. This way they could run up hill away from the river and bay. Truth be known many of the tribe may have lived up the hills and only spent their days along the water collecting and harvesting.

5:59 when I learned why we build tall buildings in tubs like this my mind was absolutely blown… I also keep to rural areas now… away from things like earthquakes where construction is simple… more like a building… less like a car or carriage…. 😅 places where a lot of stone houses can exist, hell we have a few round ones made of stone, they are adorable and a house fully built into the ground with the face inline with the cliff facing lower terrain all hobbit like except it’s rectangular not round and a little ways up north I know of an earthship that exists for seasonal office use per zoning requirements …. I wonder how earthships would fare earthquakes 🤔/endrant

Seawalls suck. They're prisonesque. Managed retreat is better. Japan is mountainous. They have infinite rock to use as fill. Used wind turbine blades can be used as well, especially underwater, where they provide the bones for reefs and similar communities.

No wall can hold the ocean, it would have been cheaper to move most of the towns up the mountain
@Joe-DeadКүн бұрын
no, it's not cheaper, all the infrastructure would have to move too, roads, rails, electrical, sewage and water BESIDES building all the new homes and businesses. think things through.
@michaelwalker8250Күн бұрын
No way that huge wall is cheaper. It would work out cheaper to move in the long run. Won't that huge wall need maintenance?
@Joe-DeadКүн бұрын
@@michaelwalker8250 so will all the infrastructure you would have to MOVE, that includes digging, foundations, concrete, pipes, wiring, you know, everything it takes to make an effing TOWN or CITY. a concrete wall compared to that is PENNIES. take a look at how much infrastructure there is in an average town, then add in the strict building standards in japan to mitigate quakes. noving a town or city is WAY more expensive because you DO have to move everything, not just the freaking houses which some of you seem to think is all that's needed. the roads, the drains, sidewalks, everything would need to be rebuilt because you can't just MOVE it.

Japan’s relationship with the ocean is deeply rooted in its culture and history, from fishing to trade and spirituality. The measures taken to manage the ocean’s proximity are practical responses to modern challenges, not a rejection of their cultural ties to the sea. Framing it as a "refusal" ignores this nuanced relationship.
