Great video's. I have subscribed. I like the customizations on the map especially the emblems for the neutral territories and these national buildings like the taj mahal. Like you I have added HBG markers and units to my game. Keep up the good work!

Thank you Arjan. I got those capital cities markers at shapeways.com . They come in a set, and I got an extra Capital Building for the Americans so that I could paint one in red and one in black to denote minor or major factory. As far as the map goes, this is a link to the file you can download and take to a print shop. I chose this one because sea zone 110 (London) is slightly enlarged to give more room for your fleet. www.mediafire.com/view/cmxs60d1arny82p/A%26A%201940%20Global%20Game%20Board_1_RAND_006.jpg

GHG, did you know that Japan had plans on invading USSR if western Axis captured Stalingrad? I think a bigger issue for me as far as G40 goes is that USSR closest factory they could use in the east is Moscow itself and thus has to rely on their starting eastern army for defense and the only place they can build a factory on would be Korea which would be insane as it is easy for Japan to capture it and thus get a free factory. I am quite annoyed they didn't at least give USSR a territory value of 2 in the east.

I have played many games of global and I have never experienced a Japanese player make it near Moscow. If the Japanese have not taken India I don't see how they financially pull it off while holding the U.K, Anzac, and U.S. at bay.

The only time I've seen it is when they spill over the Chinese/Russian border after taking out China.

GeneralHandGrenade My favorite nation to play is Japan, and I have never been in a situation where I could be a threat to Russia and the pacific allies at once. But an interesting strategy could be to rush Moscow in collaboration with Germany to get a Europe victory. Haha. But I do agree and thought of it before "why not just make an impassable zone between China and Russia"?

Some interesting ideas here. Maybe some kind of seasonal /terrain modifiers? Attacking infantry into the mountain range hit at 0,armor 2,art.1? Might make someone change their mind about going into the Urals?Defenders get plus one across the board?

You could do some kind of terrain effects to slow down both sides from passing through the mountains. Good idea Rich.

Fantastic video, I'm learning this great game (late in life 50 next year!) so your videos and young grasshoppers vids are a god send. Really enjoyed your one on SF, I'm getting totally hooked on the intricacies of this game. Now for the silly question! Is it possible to play G40 solo, I only ask because finding players were I am seems impossible. Sorry if that's a daft question but I am new to A&A. Many thanks General, keep those vids coming.

I play the game alone all the time to learn and develop new strategies and house rules. I find it's a good way to become a better player because you get to know what the other player is thinking. Even when I'm playing with others I try to see the game from their point of view so that I can defend their strategy. You just have to put yourself in the role of the nation that you are playing at the time and play a complete turn sequence as if that were the only role that you have in the game. Then move on to the next nation and so on.

GeneralHandGrenade thanks for that, that's great because I'm really into the strategy side of the game and to be able to go solo and try out different things is fantastic. Thanks, I'll keep you posted on how things are going.

GHG, Definitely onto something here. Unfortunately, analyzing the geography is very confusing using our A&A gameboard whose dimensions are significantly distorted. Tankograd and Sverdlovsk where most of the Tank Factories were is actually much further to the east just northeast of the Kazahkstan Steppes (yes thoughts of Checkov come to mind....couldn't miss your Ref to Klingons). Urals have like one land route thru them which would have been quite a hike and a final death trap for a tattered Japanese army making its way from Northern Route above Mongolia. The more direct route for them would have been to divert around the bottom of the Urals across the Kazak Steppes after crossing a narrow path along the southern part of Mongolia between the Thian Shan Mtns to the South and the Altay Mtns to the North but only after conquering all of China (to include Tibet from whence their supply lines would be under constant jeopardy). So, end analysis is the path of greatest speed and least resistance would definitely have been thru India and northwest thru Kazakstan, hit the Sverdlovsk factories and then drive towards Moscow.....still a long way in the heart of European Russia. Moscow is way too far east in our 1940 global map. Moscow was definitely gonna be Germany's to deal with. Tef

GHG. Just a quick note to reiterate that the impassable line you are drawing in your house rule does follow the line of two mountain chains that are just west of occupied china but they are not the Ural mountains they are the Thian Shan mountains to the south and the Altay mountains to the north and there is a railway that goes through the pass in modern-day times. the pass between the two mtns is just south of the juncture between Russia and China and Mongolia. To the north of the all Altay mountains is more mountains in Mongolia and above those is the Siberian boreal forest which have their own impassability issues as you noted here. although they might share the same tectonic plate as the Himalayas, they are not an extension of the Himalayas. Traditionally the dividing line between Europe and Asia is considered to be the Urals as you mentioned but the bottom of those doesn't start until the western part of Kazakhstan which is a long way from China .

When I said it was an extension of the Himalayas I was referring to the mountain range that spans north and south. I know they're not called the Himalayas but that wasn't my point. What I did was spend a couple of hours looking at satellite maps scrolling in and out looking for a way through the mountains from the Himalayas all the way north into Siberia. There is virtually no distinction between the Himalayas and the other mountain range when you look at a satellite map. There is no way through there.

Are you working with young grasshopper in developing a custom A&A? Is there any plan to also make a custom version of 1942 the smaller classic version? I have come to grips with the fact that even if I had the 1940 global I'll likely never have that kind of time to finish a game of global. I would love to see the classic version revamped for modern gaming.

No, he and I have never met before. I would be surprised if he was interested in making a smaller version since he seems to like the global game so much, but I wouldn't presume to speak for him.

I 3d printed some generic mountain range pieces to mark it impassible between China and the USSR.

Do you think it would be a good house rule to make the sahara desert passable for aircraft or no?
@waterchicken4477

The Ural rule is a Great idea but I tweaked it to act like a canal where your side had to own both sides to cross the mountains. I feel it makes sense because the railroad through the mountains and if you control both sides as the axis the game is probably close to done anyway 😂

I totally disagree with your thesis, that the game should not allow a Japanese march across the USSR because the reality of WWII (particularly geography) was the opposite. REMEMBER: this is a GAME!!!! The rules are set up to allow balanced competition! MANY, MANY rules which favor the allies fly in the face of reality. For example, Spain, Turkey and Argentina were pro-axis, NOT strictly neutral! The rule which makes all strict neutrals pro-allies is contradicted by historical reality: neutrals did NOT become pro-allied after Hitler invaded neutral Belgium, Denmark, and Holland. Would the US have ACTUALLY declared war on Japan if the Japanese invaded the Dutch East Indies?? Certainly NOT, since the US didn't go to war when Japan occupied Indochina. Respectfully, I believe your outrage over this game rule is misplaced.
@craigsimmons6496
@craigsimmons6496 6 жыл бұрын
P.S.: I know that the US doesn't automatically go to war with a Japanese invasion of Indonesia in the game; that is however the automatic end result, since the UK and ANZAC declare war and then the US declares.

hi there Canadian friend! yes...followed the troops from YGH!! what I do like about your videos is your total 'out of the box' concept, I mean really! Your explanation on how WW2 was in the reality of the game board is so in depth, it's great. Unfortunately, or as we all know, it's just a game and we know it's mistakes from the designer's. Perhaps, you can do videos on explaining basic strategy moves, and then talk about explaining in real life, this was far from impossible during the campaign, so more of a history lesson too. Anyways, nice finding you and have liked and subed! Bravehart on axixandallies.org Jon.
