Japan Win First Ever Women's Volleyball Gold - Tokyo 1964 Olympics

Classic Olympic highlights as Japan women's volleyball team add to the men's bronze with the gold medal in the tournament as the home nation at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games.
This was the first time volleyball had been included in the Olympic programme, and it was keenly anticipated by the home supporters. The Japanese men took bronze, behind the dominant Soviet Union, but the home nation was more focused on Japan's women's volleyball team.
Ten members of the team worked at the same spinning mill near Osaka. The team's coach, Hirofumi Daimatsu, also worked there, where he was in charge of buying office supplies. Such an ordinary exterior hid a man of extraordinary determination.
His training techniques bordered on the extreme. Players were taunted and forced to train almost every day of the year, but Daimatsu also created new tactics that have survived to this day.
He crafted a highly successful team that captured the fascination of the Japanese public. They were expected to win, and to win with style.
They obliged by dropping just one set in the whole tournament, a narrow 15-13 reverse at the hands of Poland. Even then, there was a reason - that set was conceded only after Daimatsu had taken some of his best players off the court in order to frustrate the watching Soviet scouts.
In the final match, the women played the USSR. The Soviet team actually reached the final with a superior record, with four victories and no sets conceded, but the match did not turn out to be the classic that neutrals might have hoped for. Instead, the Japanese were dominant from beginning to end, winning 3-0.
For the home fans, though, it was exactly the result they had hoped for. The women's triumph was watched by 80% of the country on TV.
After the Olympic Games were over, the team's captain, Masae Kasai, met the Prime Minister. She mentioned that she could not meet a prospective husband because of the athletes' strict training regime. He sympathised, set her up on a date with a man named Kazuo Nakamura - and the two went on to marry.

You have to have a lens of about 5 stops faster to produce the same quality images in that situation. If you ever shopped around for the lens you'll know that the difference in the price between 1.4 and 2.8(2stops) of the same focal length will be about 5 times.

Amigo, you do realize the rest of the civilized world also participated in WW2. And Japan was one of the few countries that DIDN'T get invaded, it's infrastructure decimated and civilians slaughtered. Like for instance the team they are playing against.

Terangeree this isn't right. Japanese total losses were ~2.5 million "Tokyo 51% destroyed" They didn't even destroy the capital. Japan got off very lightly. If not for the nukes, that's where the real destruction would start.

The city where I met my wide suffered a common fate for Japanese cities. Fukuyama is the second largest city in Hiroshima Prefecture, and, two days after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, 93 USAAF B29 bombers offloaded their incendiary bombs on Fukuyama. The raid lasted less than 90 minutes, totally destroyed 80% of the city and killed more than 70,000. By way of comparison, the infamous firebombing of Dresden employed 1,203 heavy bombers conducting multiple air raids over two days, with a death toll of around 25,000.

Junior Vieira Saraiva I wish I could tell you but I just saw it years ago on tv and don't remember the name of it anymore, maybe the other guy can help you. I can give you a short summary in what I remembered if it though: I remember they said they didn't have free days, they couldn't have boyfriends or any relationships, they were always in the same building training from day to night like prisoners, they didn't eat almost anything just a banana as meal or something like that for example, they were being molested, their hairs were cut and they were not allowed to look pretty, they were basically volleybal robot slaves. There is more but I don't remember it anymore it was very sad though.

Alaturka I can imagine the hard times these girls when through. Happily everything has changed, they are now international superstars. I mean they still work hard to achieve their goals but with the treatment they deserve as human beings and profesional athletes.

In the 1964 Olympics, the tournament was played in a single round-robin format. All teams were placed into a single pool and faced each other once. Japan won all 5 matches and lost only one set to Poland among all those matches. Final positions: 🥇 Japan 🥈 Soviet Union 🥉 Poland 4. Romania 5. United States of America 6. South Korea

In return, the company promised to find marriage partners for its female employees. However, the company did not seriously try to keep its promises.
