I've never seen green rice like this. The mochi itself seems to taste different from what we experienced before. Ordinary mochi looks as white as Shizuka's sweater and as smooth as her cheeks. I felt like being purified just before New Year's Day. But in fact the Japanese custom "hatsumode" is said to have started when the first railway of Japan opened from Shinbashi to Yokohama in 1972. Until then people walk to shrines and temples all year around, but the railway company started a campaign to promote use of railway and made people willing to go to shrines and temples early in January. The first destination is said to have been Kawasaki-Daishi, halfway between Shinbashi and Yokohama.
