Kuromon Ichiba Market was established in Nipponbashi, Osaka in 1902, though fish traders had been operating there since the early 19th century. The shopping street is 580 meters long with around 180 stores, and in pre-Covid times, it is estimated that around 23,000 people would visit per day. Today, those looking for Osaka street food can find tons of little eateries crammed along the shopping street.
Shizuka explores this treasure trove of Japanese street food, visiting six food stops at Osaka Kuromon Market for fresh seafood, fried morsels, and sweet treats.

Soy milk donut! Uni is one of those foods that I never acquired a taste for. Maybe I just had a not too fresh one but the ones I've had were just too "iodiney" and bitter.

My gosh! So much contents today! So much to share! 😍 Ok! Let's start with Aburi Sushi! I am not too sure about the rest of Japan by in my experience Aburi Sushi is not very common in Japan(but very common here in my home country of Singapore, it is everywhere). Therefore, if you see one in Japan, it is a must try! Looks like Shizzy really loves the Uni that she finishes everything! 😅 The fillings of Renkon Hasami Age is usually minced pork or prawns but you may find chicken sometimes or fish but the one common meat I have not come across in Renkon Hasami Age is lamb(lamb or mutton is really rare in Japan). Renkon(蓮根) means lotus roots, Hasami(はさみ) means to put things in between two things(I think the verb for it is "Hasamu") and Age(揚げ) means to deep fry. Chicken Karaage(から揚げ) or Japanese Fried Chicken is actually very different from American Fried Chicken or fried chicken from the rest of the world! Instead of flour or beer, the Japanese uses potato starch powder or katakuriko(片栗粒) which arguably is one of the best batter for deep frying! 😍 As for wagashi, I am a real amateur but one thing I know for sure, Hatake Kakashi and Uchiha Sasuke would "love" this "Chidori"-Ya! 😅 Lastly, the soya milk. It is actually everywhere here in my home country of Singapore. From shopping malls to train stations, from hawker stalls to supermarkets to high-end dining restaurants, soya milk is everywhere here in Singapore but none can compare to those found in Japan. Japan have some of the best soya beans in the world especially those found in Nagano prefecture and the mineral water that the Japanese used to make their soya milk and tofu is rumoured to be so sweet that even ants are attracted to it! 😍

Your explanation of the name of the gate reminded me of some of the market places in Seoul, Korea. Namdaemun, and Dongdaemun. I don't remember the exact directions, but they mean something along the lines of east gate and south gate. Anyway, a few years ago, it occurred to me that my mother and her twin sister are named Nam Suk and Dong Suk, respectively. I asked if they were named after the market places. My mother said yes. It was because they were an unwanted pregnancy, especially when it was discovered that they were twins. No thought was put into their names. It would be like naming your kids Walmart and Kroger. I found that to be incredibly sad.
