It's moot now of course, but just a little info about the blotchy effect of the stain on those upper boards. It wasn't you, the sanding or the weathering, it was the kind of wood it is. It's a species of pine, which has varying sap levels and grain densities interspersed unevenly throughout the board, making it near impossible to get an even stain coat without that blotchy effect you experienced, regardless of the kind of stain or application technique. I've done decades of cabinet making, furniture, wood turning, and just about every other kind of wood work you can think of, so believe me, I've tried just about everything there is. The only thing I ever found to really work well was aniline dye. It comes in an extremely fine powder, in just about any color you could want, and is typically mixed into water or alcohol to form a kind of stain. You can brush it on, spray it, use a rag, whatever suits you. After it dries, you can then go back over your work with a varnish or lacquer, etc. Just thought I'd throw it out there in case you decide to try to stain any more of that wood in the house. Might save you some headaches. And I have to say, that place is a dream. I just shake my head in awe at the beauty of it, and the price you got it for, and I'm addicted to seeing your process and how it all comes out. You should be very, very proud, my friend. That house is a true masterpiece.

It is now once again a 'home'. Thank you so much for documenting this and sharing it with us. I grew up in Steveston, BC which was one of the settlements of Japanese immigrants to Canada. It was mainly a prosperous fishing village surrounded by large farms. At one time it boasted 7 large fish canneries. Unfortunately the poor and cruel decision to move all Japanese Canadians from their homes during WW2 along with repossessing their properties impacted the vital village until after the war when many returned and rebuilt and created once again a strong community shared with everyone. I enjoyed going to the community centre and watching the Judo and Kendo tournaments, especially the Kendo. Enjoy your Home and your wonderful family.

Your hard work is coming to fruition. Really beautiful. Getting an intense urge to stand in front and admire the beauty :) Both the house and the landscape it resides in.

I love how you are trying to stay true to the home yet bring in different aesthetics. The house looks amazing. Now - sit down, have a beer (or Saki) and admire your achievements.
