It's going to look so great when the whole wall has this siding! Really looking forward to seeing the Japanese style garden when it's done as well. Didn't realize it was going to be walled but that makes a lot of sense! The visual really helped there - I could never quite picture what you meant when you talked about it before
@TokyoLlama4 ай бұрын
Yes, I think it will look really nice. The garden wall I build will be similar to the one in the video with the wood panel and shikkui. I remember there was some confusion about the plan for the wall last time I talked about it in a video so did a quick mockup in Sketchup.

How much difference did double glazing and replacing the old insulation make?

I have been watching your work and progress from the beginning. What I really appreciate in the videos is the lack of constant music like on other videos. I so enjoy all the natural sounds. The rain. The birds. Even the sawing and pounding. I’m not sure why people seem to need to be bombarded with music all the time. Having said that, I like your choice of the more soothing kind. 😊
@TokyoLlama4 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot! Once you hit a certain speed of time lapse you lose all sound and it's completely silent, so music is particularly necessary in those moments (eg cutting the battens time lapse). I do like the natural sounds of nature and the power tools though!

I totally agree not having annoying music in the background makes the video so much pleasing to watch.

4:35 Pre-scoring the cut line with a blade will prevent tear out when using a router on the exit cut side. No need for sacrificial wood. It doesnt need to be particularily deep, a few MM at most will usually be enough. Im going to steal your jig idea, as I am doing the exact same thing (but on a bandsaw). Looks like the Jig Router combo is faster and more accurate with less faff. BTW, an alternative method to prevent exit cut tearout is to plunge the router first into the exit cut area to full depth, then start the normal routing as usual after that.

Hi Jaya. It's great to see you at work again. As usual you are a true craftsman. The siding looks like it has been there for hundreds of years. We are going to Japan in March next year. Fingers crossed. My son and daughter in law and my husband and I are going to look at houses somewhere at a beach near Okayama. My daughter in law has a brother living in the city there. We would like to use it for holidays and for friends both here and in Japan to stay. My son said he will never be able to afford a home in Australia so he may as well buy some real estate in Japan. Our daughter in law will help with the details. There are some lovely homes for sale in the areas out of the cities.

If you have access to wood in wider widths, something like a 2x12 would allow you to do 6 at a time (in a wider jig), and then rip into individual strips. This would have the added benefit of keeping them perfectly aligned as they would be 1 board until after routing was done. You are probably done now, but throwing it out there as a thought for next time. Great work, am excited to see the garden
@TokyoLlama4 ай бұрын
Thanks, I did actually look into that but couldn't find wood with the right dimensions. (May be an excuse to get a thickness planer...) Was reluctant to build a wider jig as that would also I'd need to make a wider base for the router, or some kind of sled. But may be worth looking into it again.

Looks amazing man. Your carpentry skills are improving so much and your attention do detail, and perseverance are remarkable. I noticed how you sealed the screws at the top of the frame with silicone to protect against moisture ingress. I don't think I'd have the patience to build complete frames attached from behind like you did. I think I'd only be able to manage laying out the lap boards on the house first and then attaching the batons over the mounting screws with glue and stainless brad nails. Though, I would definitely still go through the effort of notching the batons as you did. It looks much better than the flat batons on the bathroom. Beautiful job!

Hi, I just discovered your channel. I love the way you work, actually, I love everything in this video, the Kakishibu, your step jig, your measuring gauge (I never saw that, here in California, I use wood stakes, small clamp and pencil, as I don't really care about the measurement, I just use it to transfer the dimension to the piece that I want to cut), your double thread screws, your table saw extension (I need to do that), I also made a circular saw straight cut contraption, few people realize that you can be more accurate with that tan a table saw, I have a multi-tool saw but I avoid using it as I have the feeling that the vibrations are going to mess-up my hand joints (very unpleasant tool to use, perhaps mine is crappy). I also love the sound of rain and of course your result is absolutely stunning. I'm going to explore your past videos and wait for the next one.👋🏻
