Japanese Black Pine Calendar
Late Winter:
Start to fertilize once you see the buds swelling
Here in the PNW, my buds started to swell
at the end of February
Fertilizer Schedule:
Feb 27th
March 30th
May 1st - Last application of fertilizer until Fall
Decandling:
June 20th
Date is chosen based on PNW’s growing season and how long I want
the new buds to grow. Earlier you decandle, you get longer needles and longer internodes.
The later you decandle, the shorter your needles and internodes will be.
Bud selection and fertilize:
Mid October - end of November
Once buds open up and harden off(needles are hard and pokey). You then select 2 buds
that are similar in size relative to the tree.

This is an excellent video for many reasons. The first being that it is the clearest information on JBP I have ever come across. I learnt more from this one video alone than I did from the reams of confusing text I've read elsewhere. I now feel confident in growing the two JBP I own. The other reason I love this video is simply because it is a pleasure to watch. It was beautifully shot, and you visually captured perfectly all the methods people need to see as well as signalling with scenes the change of seasons. Nice work!

@@PNWBonsai I do have a question: I have multiple black pines that are new to me this year (just getting started), my buds aren't nearly big enough now for selection and thinning. Maybe the plants are too young? I'm going to remove unneeded branches, wire, and wait to repot next spring. Should I leave the buds until spring/summer? They're only 1/2" buds in clusters of 3-5. Oh, I'm in the PNW (LFP). Thanks!

It depends on what you call organic, and chemical, I suppose all industrial feeds are chemical, but some organic can be harmful, I personally prefer just seaweed, or tomato feed, but sparingly, and I’ve grown bonsai for 40 years….never add leaf mould to a pine, either black, white, or Scott’s pine when re potting…

I am also in the PNW. Washington to be exact. I need help identifying a pine tree. The needles seem to droop down in a weeping fashion from the branches. I know enough to know that I cannot find a single bonsai video demonstrating this particular tree. I'm attempting cuttings from this tree. Next spring, I'll be attempting to air layer because I doubt I can get the cutting to root. Any reply will be appreciated.

Thank you for following the trees progression! I bought this tree in 2016 from a local bonsai store here. The tree was some what healthy when I bought it. Some yellowing of needles, but watching the tree carefully and watering carefully helped. Once the tree recovered is when I started applying fertilizer. Tree became very healthy and was ready to start developing.
