They say writing calligraphy is bringing the calligrapher's mind and character to paper. A mind, which is focussed on while preparing the ink, which is why preparing the ink is an important part of calligraphy as well.

I've read elsewhere to soak a new brush in water for over an hour. Doing this will remove a sticky film that the brush is shipped with.

I think it’s too much at least for brushes made in Japan. We soften only about two-thirds of the bristles’ length from the tip down. The remaining one third should be left untouched and stiff to make the tip of the bristle sharp. On the other hand, we fully soften especially goat hair brushes. In this case, it’s possible to soak a new goat- hair brush in water for one hour. It will be easier to remove the glue.

if you are interested in doing the inking, could you look up a couple of kanji with the meanings you like and practice. I'm sure there are youtube videos on that, too. Also many people just make art with the technique.

There’s a guy called Japanese Calligrapher Takumi on KZbin, he has a bunch of Japanese writing guides for the kanas and kanji

If I've used my brushes before, do I soak them in water first before I dip it in ink?
@calligraphylesson-tokyo6 ай бұрын
Washing the new brush in water to remove the glue and shape the tip before drying it does improve ink absorption. It can still be used without washing, though.

Look for calligraphy seal engravers on the web or Instagram. He will make your stamp with your name in Kanji characters.
