What's In a Traditional Chinese / Japanese Calligraphy Kit

I love combining origami and traditional Chinese / Japanese calligraphy. Both activities can be quite soothing and mindful.
In this video I explain what the components are in most Chinese / Japanese calligraphy kits. That way when you buy one you know what each part is used for. This video can also be helpful for any authors writing about a character who enjoys doing this type of calligraphy.

Thank you for this video! I received a kit just like this one in 1970 from a nurse who just moved to the U.S. from Korea. I had no idea how to use it. I work at a Goodwill and say a kit like this but it was with a paper book, two brushes, a stone for ink, the dry ink, and the little water well and brush rest, and this was very helpful. Thank you!

I have all sorts of art supplies that get tucked away on a shelf. It's a lot of fun to rediscover them and see what they can do. Have fun! Calligraphy can be an incredibly soothing form of art.

Yes, and I love those brushes. I started out with watercolor classes in college. Still love the calligraphy, drawing with ink, etc. My set cleaned up nicely. Not like me to leave things in storage without a thorough cleaning, unless something drastic happened. Maybe we moved or something, it got stored and a little forgotten. Best wishes for your work.

My nana got me one of these from Singapore (early internet days) and I hadn’t even realised there was a bottom layer! I guessed what some of it was and how to use it. Now I’m not sure I could find my kit and my nana has passed :(

That is sort of like asking a watercolor painter what paints are the best. It is all about what you, the artist, enjoy. Maybe you like giant brushes for making big, swoopy shapes. Maybe you prefer delicate little brushes for making small works of art. It's up to your style!

I bought my particular kit in a Japanese-owned store in Boston. There are all sorts of art stores and Japanese / Chinese stores which stock them. There are also plenty of online sources.

Every kit is different. Luckily, paperweights are pretty easy to come by.

@@lisasheaorigami yeah I noticed that too....Japanese sets can be really basic and minimal and can also be complete...In my case, it is only luck I found a paper weight and a complete set here in my country from a Japan surplus store..... It's a rare find and complete ones can be really expensive as $20 from surplus stores

There are countless types of brushes out there - it all depends on which particular kit you get. They can be horse hair, goat hair, weasel hair, a mix of hairs, etc. etc.

Do you mean that the voice is hard to hear against the background music for you? Or that you think the voice recording itself has issues? It would be really odd if you felt the voice recording itself was poor - I'm using a fairly solid camera recording system. Still, I can look into it ...

I apologize that you found the music a problem for hearing my voice. Each person's hearing can vary from others quite a lot - some easily distinguish voices while others have immense challenges with a voice against a background. I can soften the music in subsequent videos if even at this level some people are having trouble hearing the vocals against the background.
