Yeah she does have something that some teachers don't seem to have. There's a sort of personal intention behind her teaching, she's not just reading from a notebook or explaining concepts because it's correct. There's a genuine sense of her wanting to express part of the emotions behind the words that doesn't come across if you only learn from books or subtitles.

I think we shouldn't rate things too much. Misa does a great job and there's also some other great teachers who spend much energy and efforts to help us in our studies. It's a good time to learn japanese and we should be glad there's many support in doing so. =)

Misa uses English better than so many native speakers !---can't imagine ever getting so good at another language that I could deal with abstract concepts so well and so profoundly ..............this lady really peels off the outer layers and gets to the inner core of language .----shows that brains and beauty really can go together !!

I love how you explain things, and how visual your videos are to help us understand better, you really put a lot of effort on them
Thank you so much for defining these concepts. I haven’t heard of ikigai and omoiyari before and I’m so glad you've explained them today. They are lovely and we all should try to live by them. Let’s be kind to each other and to ourselves. Sharing my life with my SO is my ikigai ^_^
The way you describe “ikigai” sounds a lot like “[this thing/activity/etc] is giving me life!”

That's why I love Japan and Japanese culture so much! Sure, it began with anime and music (バビーメタルが大好きです!), but more and more I learn about culture, more astonished and humbled I feel. Concepts you talked about, or other ones like ganbatte philosophy (if I can call it that) - always taking life on with resolve, never giving up, always giving your best. Empathy in Europe is fake, we pat ourselves on the back while doing many things just for show, like caring for illegal, dangerous migrants while having no true concern for our own neighbors and people we pass-by every day. Japan seems, at least for me, much more genuine. Those concepts you talked about came from shinto, don't they? Again, I learned something interesting from you today and will search for my own いきがい みさ先生、ありがとうございました! Greetings from Poland, please take care ;-)

I find ikigai in listening to and learning from your lessons. Your voice and pace of speaking is soothing and easy to listen to. It really communicates well! I find it interesting that English is not your native language, yet I can understand you much better than many native speakers I interact with in daily life. ありがとう Misa sensei! ☺

Misa, the thorough explanations and detailed captions make your videos must watch viewing for learning Japanese. Thank you. As someone with a common red/green color blindness I want to say that you have managed to choose colors that I have no trouble distinguishing in your captions. Thank you so much for this video, because for a lot of time I kind of hated the concept of Ikigai especially because of those questions that subtly say about your purpose in life being always about making money, being as productive as possible for society. I found this so pressuring and it made me feel actually depressed. But seeing the actual view on what's ikigai ... it corresponds more with my view on life, so I think now I can declare myself in peace with ikigai and the hate and pressure is gone hahaha

生き甲斐 might be translated best as the phrase "its the little things in life" which basically means that "It's not one or a few things that keeps me going, its all of life's little pleasures that i look foreword to experiencing. "

I don't think it's so much that westerners are misinterpreting Ikigai; it's more that it's ingrained in us that happiness is about achievement or finding your "dream career". It's a cultural difference. The sad thing is that most of us spend much of our lives chasing after what you're describing and never finding it.

I am someone living in an individualistic society who practices omoiyari all the time. This is probably why I feel way more comfortable in collectivistic societies that still have space for personal freedom and expression. Hope to one day be able to move and never come back here to Europe, at least not to live. Then again I have only lived here and have no idea how living in Asia would be. Only been on vacation there. So what do I know? Haha. But I am willing to give it a shot. Still a work in progress but at least I do have some goals although they might be far into the future. My ikigai is 100% travel. Nothing even comes close to making me feel alive except hearing really good live music. But in a very different way. Both are good of course. Travel and just explore different parts of the worls is what I love the most. I dont even need to do anything specific. I can sit at a coffee shop in the summer just people watching. It's great. Or go on a hike or walk and have short conversations with some people along the way. I enjoy the simple things the most. I hap hoped you would also include the concept of 'Ma'. I love this, take a moment to process all the things you just encountered. At least that is what I believe it is. Many people just keep walking without stopping to smell the roses, I believe is what they use in English as a phrase. People that just tick off boxes on a vacation without actually taking the time to really see or hear something will not really experience it. And this isn't only connected to vacation of course. It is the same with a live show of anything. Or a movie that gives you these moments to process the story. It's walking through the forest and looking up, not moving for a while and just taking it in.

I think you are a good teacher, your explanations are detailed and interesting. I noticed a small typo in the subtitles: The word 'beautiful' has only one 'l' at the end, because it comes from the French word 'beau', which means 'handsome' or 'pretty'".
