Anything about Japanese fashion mags I left out? Also let me know if you guys are enjoying the iconic Magazine View. Maybe I can come up with more videos showing off print media like this. So if you do like the mag view, comment "aye" below this. And if you don't comment "nay". And if you're indifferent comment "abstain" just make sure you comment.

On your first point, it is actually the other way around. Since their inception, magazines like Popeye or Fruits have been educating the Japanese on how to dress better. For example, the Ivy style was first introduced in Japan by Men's Club and magazines like Heavy-Duty were giving inspo ideas on Americana more broadly in a very nerdy way like you can still see in the magazines that remain. So I would say is more of a reinforcement cycle nowadays. David Marx gave a talk about this at The Armoury, which you can find on YT if you haven't checked it out yet :) And yes, fashion is something else in Japan. Came back from Tokyo a couple of months ago and left impressed by how everyone dresses so immaculately.

When I was studying in a Japanese university in Tokyo, it was very common that "freshly moved to Tokyo from countryside" young people who got accepted in Tokyo universities would resort to fashion magazines to "transform" their looks and become "city boys and girls". Magazines would inform all their decisions from hairstyles to shoes and outwear. And almost everyone was very trend sensitive. For example, one winter you'll see everyone suddenly tying their scarves in a very specific way, and as an outsider I didn't get it, but then I get told that magazines x and y introduced this new winter trend. Japanese people are also very season sensitive so they really like switching up their styles every season and fashion magazines (a well as stores) really like to play with that. One last thing I noticed, is that Japan is way ahead the curve when it comes to trends. For example back when I was in university big platform loafers were all the rage in Tokyo, and that was way before that trend became very popular in the last few years here like it almost took 5 years to arrive to the west.

Facts. Casa BRUTUS is my favourite Japanese magazine. It's focused on interior design and lifestyle rather than fashion but it's definitely a fun one to have on your coffee table. Each issue has a different theme so you can just get whatever you're interested in.

I love Popeye and Brutus. I wish way more people would scan them. Its so hard to get them. They're pretty expensive. They're based on US 70s catalogues. Hatchet supply sells some of them.

oooh interesting insight, Brutus is one that I should pick up more often. Maybe in part 2???

@@BraveNewWear there are a couple articles that explain the history of those magazines. I love that city boy / Japanese GORPcore fusion they do. They're the reason I started my capsule esque wardrobe. Lots of money spent on Patagonia baggies / karhus / onitsuka tigers 😂.

Just got back from Japan but have lived there previously (granted in a time where i didnt appreciate fashion fully yet). What i love about the Japanese approach is that they take a sub-cultural style but elevate it with a mix of alternative materials and utilising elements of traditional Japanese design/fit. It's funny cause Westerners on tiktok see the wide and cropped fit as a "trend" when that has been a fairly basic standard for Japan/Asia for decades.
@BraveNewWear8 ай бұрын
well i'm jealous...but YEAH! at least 10 years ago I remember "wider" cuts becoming more popular and fashion people i worked with told me that japan has been way ahead in terms of adopting those trends

There is also a number of really great Japanese sewing pattern books for men - something the western hobby sewing industry almost completely ignores. I picked some books by Ryuichiro Shimazaki and Toshio Kaneko for when I eventually start making my own clothes. The only issue is that the patterns have to be adjusted to fit non-japanese sized bodies.

Love Japanese fashion magazines, but have you seen Korean fashion magazines? Not to be mean but it's a little rough. The fashion styling is nearly always very mid and I don't know what it is but the models but they always look really awkward and I'm not really sure why? It's not the models or the celebrities and it's not the setting or the photographers either. Literally I just think they're picking bad photos out of a good bunch and I don't get why. Maybe it's just my taste is different to the Korean taste, and maybe I'm being melodramatic because I've been let down a few times, but they always pick styling and poses that... . Also, the articles aren't as good as the western mags either, I'm fortunate to speak decent enough Korean to read the articles and they're a little wishy washy as well for my taste. Would far rather have Japanese mags over Korean, which is a shame because I can't remotely understand what their mags say 🤷

oh very provocative, if I were morbidly curious what Korean mags should I take a look at?

The obvious difference that comes to mind is that most fashion magazines present fashion that's not available for an average consumer, it's always some premium brands and their photoshoots that cost more than you earn in a month/year, so it's not relatable and it feels like those respectable sources just stuck in their ways, it's hard to even imagine who the audience of those publication should be, like an average guy who buys luxury clothing every week and relates to whatever their articles are about? that's just not what makes fashion appealing as a hobby for most people, and in contrast we clearly see what we're missing out on with Japanese magazines, just down to earth fashion, that's available for everyone interested in it, with articles that shine some advices and wisdom(I presume) and with plethora of styles and ways you can go about it. So it all comes down to the idea of most worldwide publications being high priced luxury ads against hobby-related magazines from Japan.
@BraveNewWear8 ай бұрын
I dont disagree! I always had that thought as a kid, who is ACTUALLY buying these luxury products. And yeah, its more alienating. Later in college when I had the chance to intern at magazines (including Esquire) It was basically explained to me that when shooting these fashion stories 1) they want to show the absolute best considering the effort involved in coordinating the samples, the celebrities, models, photographers, etc. BUT 2) luxury brands will pay the most to promote their clothes in magazines, and the magazines are then incentivized to feature plenty of luxury products.

Because in American magazines is just a big ad it's not really supposed to be shit that most can afford. Yes it looks cool but they don't care if you can afford, they want to get their name spread with pretty lights and not because it's practical. It's psychological shit, to get people to talk about the brand because in your mind you see 'Wow this ad looks so cool'. It's marketing and marketing is psychological and it doesn't have to be anything else

I liked the video and the book store he’s referring to kinokuniya. Although magazine as a media is dying in the United States and that’s why we don’t see more variety in fashion magazines.
