I think he was considered the most evil because he’s a corruption of the sacred imperial bloodline, making it extra spooky in the context of the Shinto faith at the time. Tamamo was blamed for making the emperor sick.

I agree, these people were done wrongly. I sympathize with a-lot of the onryo that were once just people who had been done wrong. I guess that the way the ancient Japanese were thinking was for one: - People always need something to blame. Whether it be witches, evil spirits, bad luck, or people dealt a bad hand and who want revenge. It’s human nature to want to find the cause of a problem so that we can avoid or mitigate it, or at least explain something out of our control. Unfortunately this often means creating Boogey-men in order to explain the unexplainable unfortunate event. Another way to look at it is: - In Buddhism revenge is looked down upon. The Buddha once described revenge as “a sweet smelling flower with bitter roots”. Someone who seeks revenge is attracted by the allure of it. Only to eat their way to the roots and taste the bitter consequences. So perhaps Onryo would have been an excellent way to create an example of what seeking revenge could do to you and other people. Japan being predominantly Buddhist during the Heian period, this would make sense. In any case, from our perspective it does kind of seem like most Onryo are unrightfully blamed as monsters. Ancient Japan’s equivalent of victim blaming i guess. Perhaps we could instead choose to read their stories as cautionary tales or maybe in order to sympathize with them.

Actually it’s all three of them. But that’s how history was written by the victors. The Japanese historians will never condemn the emperors for anything. Hell, even the emperor during World War 2 still got a free pass for the war crimes.

As for why Sutoku is rumored to be Shirakawa's son and not Toba: Sutoku's mother Fujiwara Tamako was orphaned at the age of 7 and raised by Emperor Shirakawa and his concubine Gion-no-nyogo who herself was later married to Taira no Tadamori and was supposed pregnant with Kiyomori by Shirakawa according to the Tale of the Heike. So there's multiple "colorful" semi-contemporaneous accounts of Shirakawa's philandering ways that might lead one to think there's some substance to the rumors even if the one related to Sutoku's parentage only has one source.

Modern Japan would make it difficult to make a show about him because Lese Majeste laws prevent dramatic adaptations of any specific Emperor. You could make a documentary or adapt the story for a generic Emperor, but you can't monetize his story specifically.

Thanks for the explanation bro. Btw, Minamoto no Yoritomo (1st Shogun of Japan) said the real great tengu of Japan actually is the retired emperor Go Shirakawa. Maybe that's because Go Shirakawa is so deceiful and manipulative to japanese warlords at his time. That's why the Genpei War begun and Minamoto no Yoritomo could establish the 1st Shogunate in Japan. But again, this is history vs myth :p I appreciate your content bro. Keep posting great videos. In this vid it seems like the emperor is going a little crazy and there’s not much interference. What was happening here that they changed emperors so easily?

I guess it’s because the Sesshō-Kampaku politics is over and it’s now time for Insei. Retired emperors can have their own court, which have higher authority than the original court. Then they start bribing warrior class to by giving them more shoens... which naturally led to the warriors later hijacked Insei instead. By the time of this story, the clans in the court were useless... Yup, Heian, no, the whole Japanese history is about hijacking, first they hijacked the emperor, then the whole court got hijacked by Insei, then all these stuff got hijacked by the Kamakura shogunate, then the Kamakura shogunate got hijacked by the Hojos...🤦🏻‍♂️
