Hi Esteban, this is Melvin García from Mexico. I´m a Japanese language student and a Kendoka. I know that my name is not Japanese so the common option to make my name in Japanese would be through Katakana, but I just saw your video and would like to know if you can make my name so I can use later in my shodo works and in my kendo Zekken. Thank you for your help, very useful videos.

I thought only one stamp with your name on if enough for your calligraphy art

Hi, I just picked up one of these and was wondering about maintenance. Do you have to clean them with spirits after use or just wipe with a rag? Thanks
@_shawn34882 жыл бұрын
A deep scrubbing using Espherescent soap and a 3/4" ultra-stiff wire brush will keep your Hanko Stamp well-maintained ensure each stamp is crisp and concise. -

I looked at your site. Do you only do translations and calligraphy? I was actually looking for a place to have my custom hanko made.
@Gohitsushodostudio10 жыл бұрын
YTspacecadet Yes. Most places that do Hanko only carve them and don't do translations. You can try Kanji-Hanko.com

Thanks, this is the kind of site I was looking for because I already know what kanji I would like to use.

how is it possible to translate western names into kanji? i thought only katakana
@freduardo74996 жыл бұрын
from the looks of it, i'd say the kanji were selected based on certain readings or pronunciations that mimic the sound of his name. In the first stamp, the kanji 江須手伴 are read エステバン esuteban, the katakana transliteration of Esteban. In the second stamp, 丸庭音須 is read マルテイネス maruteinesu, thus Martinez. This system is known as ateji (当て字) and is a way of using kanji to represent the sound of words regardless of their meaning.
@virtuousvibes28524 жыл бұрын
Ateji is almost similar to the Chinese way of transliterating Western names. For example: Italy in Mandarin is 意大利 Yìdàlì. Also the fact that Japanese is actually based in Chinese more or less, so it makes sense. Hanko is actually from China, stamping on official documents during the Qin dynasty

Do you teach Aikido? If so, do you use a different stamp(s) for your menjo? If you do, what do you suggest? Thank you for your time and consideration. WKB
@Gohitsushodostudio9 жыл бұрын
Wes Brown I do teach Aikido but I do not own a dojo at this moment so these are the only stamps I use. I use them only on my calligraphies.
@wesbrown38319 жыл бұрын
So you do or would suggest a dojo stamp? Wkb
@Gohitsushodostudio9 жыл бұрын
Wes Brown You would want a dojo stamp if you plan on using them on dojo affairs, like signing rank certificates for example. However even those are usually stamped by personal stamps, not dojo stamps.

can I make you a question? If you talk about shodo (japanese calligraphy) why do you use chinese music on your videos? :)
@Gohitsushodostudio10 жыл бұрын
Carmen Harada I needed Asian themed music that was Royalty Free so I could use on my videos. Haven't found any Japanese Royalty Free music yet.

+Aιмι Mιĸυ “Le Seхy Prιnceѕѕ” Sorry but I play shamisen and I learned koto for 2 years. One of my best friends plays koto and she played for me in the inauguration of my shodo exhibition this year. So there is no doubt I can identify what is koto and what is not.The instrument used here it sounds like biwa. Biwa was used in Japan until the shamisen became more popular. The drums on this melody are not Japanese either. I learned taiko for a year in Mexico and for 2 moths in Japan too. Please, believe me, I know what is Japanese music and what is not.
@CarmenHarada8 жыл бұрын
+Aιмι Mιĸυ “Le Seхy Prιnceѕѕ” HAHAHA!! If that makes you feel happy, then not, it is not a biwa. :D By fortune, my knowledge about music and Japan is not affected by your ignorance. :D It is funny to see how you think you know more about the subject than a Japanese descendant who can play koto. Very funny indeed. HAHAHA!!
