Actually, we're all main characters of our own ultra realistic animes. Despite the fact that all the characters are very well made and fleshed out, some ultra realistic anime are still trash. The cool thing, though, is that not only do you get to be the protagonist, you're also the writer. I think that's really amazing.

Honestly, the anime version of Japanese high schools are more similar to American public schools (Well, most) in terms of dressing how you want, died hair and piercings, crazy ass clubs, student council having a lot of power, and etc. Shoot, some even have unofficial clubs based around fighting (when people catch hands in the cafeteria lol)

I won't deny that here in America, gun culture is quite a real thing. As for sex, I don't know how it compares to other countries but people is definitely fairly open about the subject. But that stuff is over exaggerated in entertainment. I also see a lot of fairly accurate portrayal of Asian culture in anime although exaggerated and dramatized. I am born in Asia so a lot of the stuff I see in anime is unrealistic but not as what some people say they are. But it still have its roots in the culture.

Nice to see you do a collab with Gaijin Goomba, he is a really underrated youtuber and I love his cultural analysis in video games and anime. As a person with that has issues with test anxiety when I learned early on with Sailor Moon how test oriented schools were in Japan I was like grateful to not be going to school in Japan. I think manga/anime creators do make high school more exciting because of the dull reality. It also makes sense that a lot of anime take place in middle school/high school if the main demographic is teenagers. Also, thanks for pointing out that the students having access to the roof is just an anime thing, I always found it odd that students would actually be allowed up there with no supervision. It just must be an ideal place for creators to have characters off on their own for characters to be to themselves.

So, what i see is that Anime High schools are more like High schools in the West (Europe) then actually japanese high schools...huh -we had no rooftops which were built... you probably leave if you had lunch and went to the next supermarket lol but we had a few discussions if we should make the rooftops nice and all that... yeah no, everybody wants them but nobody wants to work on them ;) -I had by graduation somebody who skipped 3 classes and was 15... also i knew someone who went with 17 to university for studying...so its more common in the west -We had an actual student councils with a lot authority who raise money, were the first person to talk to if problems accured, organized (like really with budget and stuff and money raising) events and then we had our "political" student council which went to discussions (in parlaments) with other schools to debate with politicians what they want for school (no bs) :I and other issues (example: we included the hours a student misses classes (also noted if pardoned and dont) in his final school diplom for various reasons) -You probably live in the west and know that everybody dresses like he/she wants and can wear everything so... idk, Punks who have like rainbow hair and discuss the falling middle class in politic classes are nothing special -never got a love letter :/ only from people who wants my money :( -you could have an after school club about anything... but literally nobody would join you or if, they would say "lets meet after school somewhere and do...x" This is so strange that anime high schools are more like high schools in the west :o

While we're discussing high schools, thought I'd mention some different things about Swedish high school, or gymnasium as we call it. 1. Programs. When applying for high school you're choosing from a list of different programs, which lets you focus your education on different subjects. You can focus on things like natural sciences, technical subjects or arts, but there are also more practically aligned programs like electrician, or hairdresser. Everyone is required to take certain classes, like Math, English and Swedish, but at what difficulty level and how much varies a lot. 2. No uniforms! Uniforms are never required in any part of your education, outside of possibly work uniforms for practically oriented programs. 3. What are school clubs? No, like seriously. I've never seen a proper school club for things like sports or music. These things are usually not tied to schools, but rather proper sports clubs with a youth department or municipial music/culture schools. The exception would be elite high schools with special programs for i.e. football or orienteering. 4. Lunch is always included. All high schools are obligated by law to serve lunch, so while school cafeterias still exist, they're not as big and students eat at the school restaurant/dining hall. Teachers might also choose to eat there, but it usually costs them money, while it's free for the students. 5. Probably a few more things, but I dunno. Feel free to ask anything if you're curious about Swedish school life :)

Wanted to add on from an American perspective! 1. NO programs. In American high school, practically everyone will end up taking the exact same classes. There are options for more "advanced" students to take more "challenging" classes (your mileage may vary), but everyone will inevitably learn the same things unless you are a couple years ahead of your classmates in math. I believe this lack of practicality in high school classes it what leads to many students feeling as if they are re-learning things they already learned in middle school/junior high. Classes in homemaking, parenting, or finances are condensed into one class for each category. That's one class in your entire four-year high school career that might teach you how to change a diaper and it's entirely optional. Anything resembling teaching you how to survive in the workforce is completely optional, possibly restricted by age, and requires students to travel to the community college every day. These classes included students from each high school in the district and barely made the average class size. 2. No uniforms, either! This is something I want to see a video on regarding Japanese policy because those skirts are always ridiculously short. We do have guidelines on what is appropriate, but they are sexist and arbitrary (girls' shoulder straps must be three fingers wide and shorts/skirts must reach the tip of their fingers, but boys can walk around with their pants below their butts and with offensive terms on their t-shirts). 3. But really, what ARE school clubs? "Clubs" in my high school were once a week at lunch and freshmen were required to go, but after that no one goes to clubs. There are, however, tons of after-school activities that aren't considered clubs. Each high school has a couple tiers of (American) football, volleyball, soccer, softball/baseball, and swim teams, sometimes a team for boys and one for girls and a team for each grade. Can't give good details because I never played sports. The arts were present in my school as classes you took during the day. You could have a schedule with choir-art-math-science-literature (aka English) and then a language class like Spanish. Each day has the exact same schedule. Then after school was over, you'd go to the gymnasium or gym, which to Americans is just an attached building/classroom for sports and P.E. (aka physical education aka everyone's hell), for sports or the auditorium (theater) or whatever classroom related to your "extracurricular activity." These could count as clubs. Basically, each American high school is supposed to have a little of everything and the bare minimum job training, which is why American millennials whine about how they're bad at "adulting." 4. Lunch is included, in the cafeteria. The cafeteria doubles as a dining hall. I grew up in a smallish town so I don't know how it works for others, but most students sat on the floor in the hallways to eat or on the grass outside. Even if the cafeteria was big enough, we'd rather spread out across the school. We have programs for students in need, but most students have to either pay for lunch there or have their parents deposit an amount for school lunch. Kids frequently have to remind their parents to add money so they don't run out and go lunchless. Upperclassmen frequently drive or walk into town to buy fast food. The quality of food in American schools is absolutely atrocious. You might like your pizza greasy, but you haven't seen high school cafeteria pizza. To me, eating the food provided by my school was an act of desperation. Everyone else was just so used to eating utter garbage that they couldn't tell how truly disgusting it was. When you're homeless, an infested mattress in an alley looks like a hotel suite, right? Crudeness aside, I love hearing about the differences between countries and their school systems. Also, American high schools, much like Japanese high schools, don't have access to the roof and our student council members don't really hold any authority.

NoiseDay Cool! Thanks for the input :D Regarding the roof thing, my high school was a big mess of different amounts of floors and basements in different sections and houses. The section I was at (Natural sciences + administration) had 5 floors and an observatory at the top, which kinda counts as the roof? Other than that, no roof access. Our student council had a budget, which they could spend on improving things outside of the classes, like extra furniture and pool tables, and also has a say in things affecting the education sometimes, but they're mainly there as representatives for their respective program and grade.

Well, in brazil there is no clubs or student council, we need to use uniforms, until we reach, i think in North america you guys call high school, but in here its called college, and its 3 years of it, and in that period we don't need to use uniforms, everyone learns the same things, unless you take some sort of specializing school or something like that, and thats mostly it. In Uruguay, regarding programs, the first year of highschool is the same for all; the second year you got to choose from science, biology, humanities and art; and in the third year there's even more choices. There are also technical highschool for more specific thinng, wich take the three years. About the rest: Uniforms: nope. Clubs: neither. Lunch: you pay it.

In Bangladesh, our programs basically vary from school to school (depending on sponsors). Some schools might have a book reading program while other schools gets access to a sports program. We have to choose a minimum of 7 subjects at the first year and then 3 at second and third year. But things also get astronomically harder at second and third year so the first year is actually the easiest year. Uniforms are a must for most of the times. School clubs are virtually the same in every school here. You don't have the freedom to make your own club. Lunches aren't included in the middle and low class schools. The high class prominent schools on the other hand does have free lunch.
