Recently, I have dinner with a finnish, he told me a lot about Norway and Sweden and Finland. I am so surprise to know their very small number of population, but having a very respectful culture. I wish one day I could visit your country!

I just had dinner at a Japanese restaurant and it was the best service I've ever had. They anticipated what I wanted as you said. You're explanation about the way of thinking about others helped me understand why being overly clear could seem rude. I love your channel!! Thank you!!!

I'm going to Japan during the summer to visit a friend who's working out there so I'm trying to learn a bit of the language and culture so I don't come across as rude but being British I wouldn't think twice about telling someone exactly what I wanted or speaking forwardly to people. I'm finding Japanese culture to be really interesting so thanks for the introduction.

I never considered the possibility that by making specific requests it implies that the worker wouldn't know what to do if I didn't say anything--therefore, insulting. Very informative. I guess there's still a lot about Japanese culture that I need to learn.

Thank you Komori san for another great and educational video. Here in sweden it´s more normal for costumers to ask for help in shops etc. But our neighbour country Norway, the hospitality from people working in shops, restaurangs are great, not as in Japan I suspect though. Have a wonderful day.

When my dad went to Japan on a business trip, he was surprised by how he had to give money and how change was given to him. They had him put it on a little tray and slide it over, and vice versa. Even though it was meant to be a polite gesture so there wasn't any uncleanliness, it made him feel like they thought he was dirty.

I agree, Generally people don't want to be inconsiderate person. If you find someone who is not considerate, let's think like this way .. He or she must have some deep problem or worry in his private life. And let him as he is. I am always try to think in this way.

Yeah, I agree there were many times I felt the same way ~ I developed a tolerance or kinda "Whatever" attitude about it and tried not 2 let it bother me too much tho ~ but I can def. say sometimes it made me feel like I would never, ever fit in ... then realized, hey exactly, I will NEVER fit in 100% EVER ... so, then I accepted that as a given and said "Oh well", c'est la vie ~ I don't need total acceptance from people to be happy and live the way I want to live ^-^ Thanks for the comment:)

No, it helps us. If we receive some question, then we think we got a "right" to say what we really want. Sometime Japanese are waiting for being asked, because it make us easier to be honest.

I have to agree with you. Service and politeness has not been better anywhere else I have traveled. I also agree that the fact all the rules and customs in Japan can be very difficult for an outsider to assimilate into. As a foreigner, these little things are perceived as annoyances - Why must I do this in this way? To me this method seams wasteful, why can't I do it this way, it's better. And this is where "thinking of others' is important, and as an American, we are raised to think of "me".

Hospitality (hospitalité) is very different here as it's completely unrelated to services in shops or restaurants (and there's a great lack for this kind of services in France). This word is used here for something else. It's about putting people up, inviting people for lunch or dinner even without planning it, for example. About "think about others', i think it's one of the main causes of misunderstanding between french and japanese people ^_^ (maybe people from other countries too)

I think this style of behaviour is common in many Asian countries, probably because of the culture shared by those countries...I have experienced this kind of service in China too and I thought it was really nice and polite. Unlike in many European countries, in countries like China, Japan and Korea a customer is always treated with respect, even if they don't buy anything expensive. On the other hand, in personal life it can be negative - people don't say what they really think or want...

As in most Western countries (that I know of) it is normal to ask for what you want, is it considered rude if you were to do this in Japan as a tourist? I am just wondering how far the custom extends. ^^

Greetings from Germay! I really enjoy it to learn something about Japan. May you know, that it is very expensive for us in Europe, if we want to visit it. My Question is: Is there something about your Country what you don't like, or you think, " this or that could be better" ? PS: Of course i subscribed you :)

For example I want a cup of cup of tea. I can not say that directly, I have to wait till someone feels or reads my face that I want a cup of tea? That sounds complicated. I will probably sit there the entire evening without getting any tea.

I didn´t know that, only saw the comment. Ofcourse every people and their country has good and bad sides, every culture has. But from my perspective and from my life my best friends are japanese, so that was my first opinion (take something from myself, as we always do when it comes to things we have experienced). I don´t believe in an idealized version, I believe what I see and hear. An idealized version would be me having an nose massage centre there with +1,000 costumers every day. Be safe

An interesting insight to the Japanese, but I wonder whether people from other cultures see it that way, because if I wanted something I would ask for it. If I didn't want something I wouldn't ask for it. So if someone gave me some tea after my meal without me asking for it I would think, Why have they given me some tea when I don't want any tea?

Myself and Americans in general should act more like this. To think about the others is difficult when most people are thinking only of themselves. In our Christian bible Jesus said, "Do onto others as you would have them do onto you." This is what he meant, to think about the others.

...Okay then? You don't have to get an attitude over nothing. I was just saying that something that seems like hospitality can come across as ill-mannered. I wasn't insulting Japan. I love Japan. I was just saying that it doesn't seem like hospitality across all cultures. You don't have to get offended over some random person's KZbin comment. Calm down.
