There are exceptions to every rule, and my dating experience was slightly different. I was an English teacher in a language school and the lesson topic of that day was food, so I eventually asked my student to go to dinner with me and she said yes. We met at the appointed time on the appointed date and we went out to dinner, she I and her friend. We started dating regularly but she always brought a friend along (kind of a "chaperone"). We did eventually marry, and divorce. Dated several more students and women I met in bars and in these cases all dates were one-on-one experiences. Maybe the reason I was so successful was the fact that I spoke Japanese rather proficiently. Between 1982 and 2014 I had 1 Japanese wife and 7 Japanese lovers. Don't know when this video was made, but in my experience, these days, most Japanese women will jump at the chance to date any foreign man, and I'll tell you why. Most Japanese men still treat women like s**t!. Most foreign men treat women with respect (at first, at least) so the Japanese women love this "attention". This doesn't mean you have to spend lots of money on the woman, only that you be kind and considerate to them. Seriously, Japanese proficiency is definitely a plus. Most Japanese women you meet will not be very proficient in English, and you are in Japan, after all, so "when in Rome, ...". I am certain that if I couldn't speak Japanese I would not have had so many Japanese lovers. My ex-wife and one other lover were English students, but none of my other Japanese girlfriends spoke English at all, we spoke only Japanese together. My advice, I don't care if you only plan to spend one week in Japan, please spend at least one month studying basic Japanese via book and CD EVERY DAY. Believe me, even if you aren't interested in womanizing in Japan unless you spend your time in "gaijin only" (foreigner only) ghettos like the Foreign Correspondants Club, most of the common Japanese people you meet will not be able to carry on a conversation in English, French, German, etc. One more suggestion, don't compliment a Japanese woman on her looks until you start dating regularly. In the beginning compliment them on their clothes, their jewelry, their hairstyle, the work they do ("Oh, you're a @#$, that must be interesting work. Please tell me more about your job!"). Also, the Japanese usually don't show any kind of affection openly in public, so IN THE BEGINNING don't try to hold hands while walking down the street or give the lass a "goodnight kiss" . Good luck!!

I think this makes it very easy for me to fit in with your culture. I have wanted to go to Japan for a while now. Being shy as I am, I would not mind the dating system. I do agree with you that it gets tougher to find a real relationship, but that is in most modern countries. Technology, laws, and traditions all change and most often than not seems to hinder the growth process of the country's population. For more traditional Japanese people, I see your point of view. For the post-modern Japanese, I can see others more engaged in the arcade, work, or school and they might try their luck with those places. If you are a foreigner like me, who would stick out from the rest of the crowd, it would probably be easier. I have learned of gaijin lovers, and that pretty much sums up that. I am not surprised by anything anymore, and what you are saying right now I completely believe.

I’m sorry to hear that you girlfriend’s parents did not seem to like you. Generally speaking Japanese people love Americans but I can’t say if they are generally biased against Blacks or not. I do know however that when I lived in Tokyo in the 90’s there were certain cliques of Japanese girls who would date Black guys exclusively. There was even a nightclub in Roppongi called Circus, which was well known as a place for Japanese girls to hook up with Black men. I cannot say how the parents may have felt about this though. Anyway, in the old days here in the States I had problems myself with Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean parents not wanting me dating their daughters because I was not Asian. Of course, sometimes parents don’t like the guys their daughters date no matter what race they are and you can never really know why they don't like you unless they spell it out. By the way, don’t take this the wrong way but are you really an African American or are you someone of African decent who was raised in another country? I am only asking because the grammatical errors you made are typical of someone who is a not a native English speaker. They are not the types of mistakes that you would expect to see from an American, not even one who is from a lower socioeconomic background or who grew up in a subculture within the United States. I’m not trying to put you down or anything, I’m just curious where you are from originally.

I don't think japanese people are going to gokon because they are shy, but because this system became common/normal. Most japanese guys I met were going to gokon just because this is the best way to pick up girls without being considered as "charai" ("hunters"). The other reason is they don't have lot of free time, so it is easier for them to set a group date few weeks in advance, that hanging out casualy in a bar after work (and also because after work, they have to hang out with collegues)
@DaimonAnimations11 жыл бұрын
I live in Canada and I have found too that a lot of people of my age (30) are also yet not married nor with children, I myself I'm still single and I just recently found a girlfriend from Japan, she is 29 and she told me the same, that is very difficult because Japanese are very shy and if someone like me comes and say "I love you, you're so beautiful" they wont get offended but they are not used to it so it kind scares them this, "head on" initiative.
@srolesen8 жыл бұрын
I've had Japanese girls ask me to "go out for dinner together" but never for a date specifically, or invite me to a party so they are not so shy that they wont take the first step, or wont take any step at all, but it's always very very hard to really get to know who they are as a person, even if you tease and their supposed to get annoyed, or fake annoyance they respond with mostly generic good manners. I guess it's kinda charming for a little while, and it's certainly the kind of quality I would appreciate in a maid, but what guy's really want that in a girlfriend ? Anyone else have the same experience ?

+Zaphod7835 And here I was thinking that honesty and straightforwardness were valued in the West.
@Zaphod78358 жыл бұрын
WiggaMachiavelli What's an appreciation for honesty got to do with being disgusted by women who value their mate's paycheck and status more than his character? There are honest pedophiles out there too, who will openly tell you "hey, I like fucking kids"... if I don't like their behavior/values does that mean I don't like honesty too?
@WiggaMachiavelli8 жыл бұрын
Zaphod7835 The thing is that many women are like that in every country. At least in Asia they don't try to pretend otherwise. And yet it's not uncommon to hear Western complaints about how the Japanese are indirect and ambiguous and not really earnest. So which is it? Do you want a Japanese woman who's honest about how finances will work in marriage, or do you want a Western woman to pretend that she doesn't want your money? For the record, it's obviously better to be able to identify the paedophiles than to have them disguised and difficult to catch.
@matthewwhitwell93618 жыл бұрын
+Zaphod7835 It's more practical than anything. If you're going to be a couple, you need to be able to support each other. Generally there's still quite a "traditional" family structure in Japan where men work and women stay home. It's not so much "you're not worth it unless you're making bank" but "if we got married, we might not be able to afford life together" so it's best to find a good financial match.

For me as a swedish woman living in Japan I had my first real culture clash experience when we talked about exactly this subject during class in my Japanese language school. I was the only westerner in my class, and the other students were from Nepal, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Mongolia and Korea. A guy in class asked me what terms or conditions a man needed to fulfill for me to accept his marriage proposal; and I was almost offended that he would see me as "that" kind of woman and proudly declared that IF I would marry, it would ONLY be out of love, and nothing else. He answered me back by asking if I didn't think that was a bit selfish and immature of me; to only act on my own feelings and not think about my future kids, wether they'd be able to go to university (or even school over 6th grade for that matter), on how my parents were going to be cared and provided for when they retire from work, or just being able to go to the hospital when needed, etc; and I realized how completely different our lives, cultures and societies are. I no longer get upset when I (frequently) hear both women and men around me contemplating these kind of material things when choosing whom to date or marry, because I've got a better understanding of why those things are actually important for them.
@halcondanan13 жыл бұрын
I'm really impressed with your videos, so many things I didn't know... Family and group dating huh? now that is so different from how things work here in Venezuela (make that western society in general) hahaha. Thanks a lot for these videos!! they're really interesting, can't stop watching them.

I know that in Denmark you find people at the internet. You start a dating profile. Find one you like and then ask him or her to a date.. Or you can be lucky and meet at parties (I think mostly the young/teenagers looking at parties and ask him/her to drink or dance and later get the number or facebook profile to meet again). But it really depends on the person you are. Most commen way is the dating profiles but some find at hobbies, work, schools and so on :)

So you are saying that Omiai is actually making somewhat of a comeback in Japan? That very interesting - and very surprising. When I lived in Tokyo in the 80’s and early 90’s I never met a single Japanese girl who would ever even consider Omiai. They all thought it was kind of a silly old custom. Also, I have to say that I found dating in Japan to be pretty much the same as here in the States, at least for me in Tokyo. Of course girls might act differently when dating a foreigner as when dating a Japanese person. And country girls might be different than big city girls. Also many of the women I dated tended to act more like westerners than stereotypical Japanese women. By the way, I should probably mention that some people might misunderstand the title of your video. If you look up the word “lover” in the dictionary it will say “a partner in a sexual OR romantic relationship”. In actual real world usage however - at least here in the USA - it tends to ALWAYS refer specifically to a sexual relationship. So for a video like yours we would usually say “how to find a boyfriend or girlfriend”.
@Mysth712 жыл бұрын
I'm french and I've attended few "gokon" (group dating system), so yes, it is totally ok. In fact, some japanese guys are happy that a foreigner join this kind of party, because most japanese girls are attracted by foreigners, so it is a good way to make the party looking better. So you are kind of "used", which is not really a pleasant experience. It is my personnal experience, so I don't know about other foreigners, but this is how I felt.

I've nothing against the group and/or family dating system. In fact, it feels sort of comfortably old-fashioned and traditional. My question is though: How is it looked upon if westerners come to Japan and join a group date? For example, I'm Swedish. Would it be OK for me to try to find a Japanese girlfriend at all, or would I be seen as a gajin, trying to steal away a Japanese lady from a Japanese man? Also, if a foreigner asks a Japanese girl out directly, will she still be shy? Or offended?

So I let her decide if she wants to get a room just for her or stay with us.I was worried of being anti-romantic to offer this. Thanks to your advice I think I did the right thing. What do you think? Thanx!

Hello komori841! I am glad you are multi-cultured so as to be able to articulatedly explain in detail the Japanese way of life. Traditionally, Asians such as Japanese, Chinese, korean...are'nt that good in explaining themselve clearly to an english-speaking crowd. Thank you very much for sharing things not found in textbooks!

Nice video. Thanks for teaching the world about the Obon custom. I will be back in Hokkaido next month to spend the Obon with my wife's family there. I do this every August... Wow it sounds like you have much experience meeting men. ;) I don't think you are so shy are you? haha

However, that doesnt mean you will find a girl who likes you for you, most of the time you're gonna find either someone whos using you to practice their english, someone who has this romantic unrealistic view of western men or its gonna be someone who just wants you for the novelty of having a foreign bf. usually its a combination of the three.

Just so you know, the term "Lover" in English, is usually assumed as "Sex partner." (Not always though). A more casual term is "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" or "partner."

Could you please explain how to do Purikura - the fun photo booths? At 400 yen each, it is expensive to use when we don't know all the choices. I read kana, but very little kanji, and not fast enough to push the buttons! Any tips would be helpful, thanks.

I hate to admit it but it actually makes sense. If the families are more involved, then it will create less stress among what we Westerners complain about...the 'In-Laws'. It also might give more insight as to why Japan's divorce rate is considerably lower than the West. One of the main factors that causes stress on any marriage (besides money) is family.

Verdie09 I see !! Sorry I could not get it. In Japan recent days, the man called ”herbivore men” are getting status. CNN also comment about this words. These men are less proactive, but Japanese woman gradually start to understand these men are honesty and not pretended and make woman happier. So do not worry, its not necessary to worry anything! Shyness means, you are not get used to, and its positive factor either .

You've mentioned about group dating. How/ where could someone find a number to a companies that deals with this short information? In America we have like a dating websites that anyone around the world can access and look up any nationalities. Of course the second step is by going on the first dat and so an so fourth after the first date. Could you be a little clear on how to find a company that will help you forum a group dating scene in Japan.

i think it is interesting how we live on the same planet, yet we are worlds apart. Your culture is harmonious with nature, even human nature. My American culture is out of touch with nature (completely) even with human nature. It feels very refreshing to hear how Japanese culture views dating and marriage as things to treat as sacred. I get absolutely no sexual vibe from your speech or any innuendo apart from your complete natural sincerity to show us how things are viewed in Japan. Great video

Question: How has current [2016+) improvement in social media impacted dating and interaction in Japan? And is there a difference in partners looking for casual "hook ups" or pure sexual liaisons, and for deeper romance?
