Have you ever experienced winter in Tokyo in an old house? single glassed windows, air seeping through and the LACK OF INSULATION is the cause.
Working on videos for the garden and the staircase, anything specific you want to know?

in the states we use a utility knife cut on one side and "snap" the break from the other as they do with dry wall (a little less foam dust.)

Utility knife and a straight edge would have been much quicker. If the width is consistent between joists you could even do a simple jig.

Use a cheap power jigsaw (check the blade length) for less dust when cutting dense foam insulation (the blue kind he uses here). Do it outside over a tarp, then vacuum up the debris. Wear a dust mask or N95, safety glasses, and leather gloves for PPE. This type of foam is great for filling small gaps to prevent cold air from flowing (like a small window). The downside is you have to have very precise cuts otherwise you'll end up having to shove it in. The benefit is it fits small gaps precisely when done right. Alternatively you can try to find a fluffy insulation product. One that is less spikey than the fiberglass kind (never use that crap). R19 at the minimum (typically used for side walls). Higher R values will be thicker compared to dense foam insulation.

Thank you for your comments! You know what youre talking about. Youre right, you want them precise to fit! No airgaps. Eventually we taped the gaps too! Thanks for your help Digitaltutorials

Rockwool is a great material and possible to find in Japan (denser than fiberglass so it blocks airflow better).

I don't think that foam will attract termites but I do know pests like insects and rodents will burrow into it and make nests if they can get to it. There are some issues in the southern United States related to rigid board insulation because it makes it too difficult to locate and treat termites when they're living in the stuff. Although I believe they are using it as a barrier between the dirt and the basement/foundation, so your installation is pretty different from that in that by the time they get up to the foam they'd already have to be in the wood floor joists by that point.

What were the benefits of the insulation in the floor? Lower temperatures?

Hello. I have some questions. Firstly Do Japanese government have weird procedures to renovate a house. Such as repairing of floor or beams? Secondly Can you repair the plumbing . Or hire a plumber..Also that needs weird procedures.
@pablodm9
@pablodm9 4 ай бұрын
On srparated houses like this no problem with the floor. But he recommends not to deal with plumbing, as water leaks could kill your house due to humidity and heat. Also, there are regulations for anything that's not a "small fix" and you'll need a licensed pro. especially if you want to connect to the public water

Did I hear that correctly?!?! You're using an insulation material that attracts termites?!?! Ummmmmmm. ???
@monkeylordofdoom14

I interpreted that as to not leave the saw on the ground as it attracts termites. Potentially because of all the sawdust in it they would be attracted?
@ANTONINJAPAN
@ANTONINJAPAN 11 ай бұрын
The ground has now a concrete slab that if not cracks, most likely won’t get accessed by termites ( knock on wood). We cleaned up really really well! On the other hand, maybe glass wool won’t be as attractive for termites? I choose this styrofoam because construction people here seem to recommend it, easy to use, good R value and not too expensive to put in!
@Big-Wonka
@Big-Wonka 11 ай бұрын
It was probably lost in translation. I'm sure sawdust from wood attracts termites, but not the sawdust from the insulation.
