Thank you for the informative video on a relatively niche topic! Shoyeido is a longtime favorite brand of Japanese incense of mine (although many of their scents I find too artificial and cloying these days, but I adore their Floral-World Incense line), as are the brands Kyukyodo and Kungyokudo (especially the latter, which is the oldest still-existing incense producer in Japan).

Thanks for the Nice Video. I have ordered some Japanese incense. I have heard a lot of people say they do not like Patchouli in Incense as you mentioned yourself

Thank you for your review. I've just started burning incense and started with Shoyeido' s Autumn leaves, which I really like. I also tried Nippon Kodo Green Tea , which is beautiful when burning, but I don't like the lingering after fragrance. I loved your description of the temple. I only burn outside or in my office. I would love my office to smell like an old church with a history of reverential prayer. Hope you are well. 💜

How have you been now in your incense journey? I would just like to mention however, that Indian incense is also an "art" form to them as well. India and Pakistan (which was just apart of india till the 40s) are the biggest exporters of quality incense, Japanese incense isn't really "upping your game", its just a different way of making the incense, and the type of things they use, they also use the same scents and E.Os and powders (like sandalwood) as the indians, but they just use a lot more complex mixtures and spices. Indian incense can be of very, very high quality as well, they are just different iterations of the same scents. Indian incense is my favourite actually, but I do really enjoy Shoyeido and Nippon Kodo sticks too. Basically, what I am saying is, Japanese incense isn't automatically better than Indian incense, you can get a lot of crap Japanese incense, and a lot of really good Indian incense and you can also get really good Japanese incense and a lot of really bad indian incense.

Shoyiedo is in my backyard, in Boulder Colorado. Auto leaves is one of my favorites, but for a daily House feel, we burn lots of moss garden, to. I’ve not tried other lies, as there is still so much in shoyiedo, but I’m excited to try a few of the ones you mention.

Ahh, nice collection and interesting comments! I have been into Japanese incense for a while. Kai Un Ko and Reiryoko are also favorites of mine. By the way, 'mainichiko' means 'daily incense. The NK frankincense, myrrh and kyara all say 'mainichiko' on the front of the box. I think the Mainichiko line is intended for those who use incense every day, whether for meditation, chanting, or, as is customary in Japan, offering a stick of incense at the family altar every morning.

Lovely video, thanks for all the reviews. I have been investigating Japanese incenses too recently and have quite a lot, mainly imported from Japan. I was wondering what your last incense would be and I laughed when you said Kyara by Minorien because I agree 100% with you - it's an amazing smell, quite unlike anything else. They do a 3-box sampler set with about 10 sticks each of the Kyara, Jinkoh & Byakudan - they are all really worth trying. If you like Kunjudo's Karin then do try "Tokusen Karin" (the "excellent" version) and also try to get hold of some by Kyukyodo (e.g. Seigetsu, Miyuki, ShoRanKoh or Maigoromo) and "Meiko Takano Reiko" by Koyasan. There are so many great incenses to try :)

Nippon kodo is just about the lowest quality mass-produced incense company in Japan other than something you'd get at a 100¥ store. In my opinion not worth trying all of their different scents. Companies like Tennendo, Shoyeido, Baieido produce some of my favorite Japanese incense with a lot more depth to them (and a bigger price tag). As for the video, good job! You have good taste and a good nose. Your Japanese pronunciations are quite creative haha

Here in Brazil, Japanese incenses are cheaper then Indian incenses. Mainly because there is a Brazilian incense brand called Barão Kôbo (Baron Kobo) that makes Japanese-style incenses. Their products are very good and follow Japanese standards. The Indian ones are mostly imported.

Zuiun/Lucky Cloud was one of my favorite incenses sticks for use in a solemn occasion. It's stately but not overbearing. Kyoto Autumn Leaves is also excellent, but less formal. Mostly now days I only use low smoke incense as I have mild asthma. Shoyeido's Madoka is a close match to Kyoto Autumn Leaves, though it's slightly less sweet. Nippon Kodo's Seiun Chrysanthemum is also excellent for a pleasantly floral incense that's low-smoke. For meditation I usually burn a stick of low-smoke sandalwood. There are several excellent varieties and I find the fragrance more relaxing than aloeswood.
