Do they come in a 5 speed manual over there? I would love to pick up a RHD postal Jeep here in the USA and convert to manual. They are 100% always automatic here, which makes sense for constantly stopping at mailboxes.

I retired from the Brampton Ontario Chrysler Assembly plant a year ago. We built the Charger, Challenger and 300's. For several years we were building RHD Chrysler 300's for the Asian market(China, Japan, Australia). It was a little weird testing them on the rolls(dyno) machine but I only got in the wrong side the first couple times.

We had a36 RR, right hand drive, gear shift and lever operated parking brake also on the right. After a while you get used to it. No good for drive throughs or bank drive ups. Get a pre-war Roller if you really want trials and tribulations. I like the Jeep, myself. There are some down here in s Fla delivering mail on rural routes, not sure if they’re available anymore. Great to see you back. Merry Christmas, Jim.

The speedo has probably been changed after being imported back as they are going out with a km speedo, rust is something you will rarely find on Japanese vehicles as the compulsory yearly roadworthyness testing in Japan is very strict on rust, Japanese vehicles are therefore very well maintained and worth buying which we do a lot here in the UK

That Cherokee has the off-road shields package with the tank and front end shields. Most of the Mail Jeep were the Sport models with cloth interiors.

Yes, driving on the left with right-hand drive cars is standard for Japan. Being right-hand drive this one may well have been built in Graz, Austria in the Chryslet factory there. I'm actually fairly surprised that this is right-hand drive as, in Japan, it is considered more up-market to have a left-hand drive car so a lot of Mercedes-Benz, big BMWs and a whole lot of the imported luxury SUVs sold there will have been left-hand drive so a right-hand drive Japanese market Cherokee must be a pretty rare thing...

Start a business importing junkyard front passenger seats and carpets (driver’s side in the US) in from Japanese junkyards since driver’s side always worn out while the passenger side looks new. You’d make a fortune!

So interesting reading the comments, here in New Zealand all cars are RHD, plenty of ex manufacturer models from USA are made for the nz,au,UK,Japan,Singapore,Malaysia, Hong Kong, parts of africa including south Africa.basically former English colonies. Some popular ones such as f150 are not sold the ex factory but can be converted by after market companies- it expensive. Yes the brake master cylinder moves and other bits to fit. It would just be easier if nz drove on the right however! We only have 5 million people.

I have lived in the USA my entire life and I would love to have one of these in a 5 speed. I'm not a mail carrier, I just have a thing for RHD. I'm actually midway through converting my '95 Civic to RHD. Its a shame you can never find these postal Jeeps in 5 speed. But it makes sense for them to be automatic stopping every few feet at mailboxes. I wonder if 5 speed conversion would be easily done with factory parts without custom fabrication.

I live in the UK and had a 2000/1 Jeep Cherokee Classic for over ten years it had very little rust on it when I sold it I only really sold it due to problems getting parts for it jeep do like changing stuff for no good reason. I have now got a 2007 JK 2.8crd jeep cherokee/liberty in the US it drives nice and is good off road but looks shit compered to the old XJ I thought when I first got it that I would get used to the way that it looks but I still hate the look of it but I would loose to much money if I changed it now so it seems I am stuck with it. As for right hand drive cars we drive on the left in the UK also Japan Australia several other countries so there is a good market for right hand drive cars why they ship right hand drive cars to the US from Japan is they do not use salt on there roads unlike we do in the UK so they tend to be rust free.

@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 5 жыл бұрын
It might have been, but from the look of it, with the face on the speedo not matching that of the other gauges, I suspect it's just had a sticker marked in MPH stuck on top of the original kilometer speedo, which is a fairly common trick with imported Japanese vehicles in countries that use MPH. Usually if the speedo has been changed out for a unit calibrated in miles you'll find that the odometer will have been converted at the same time, either automatically by the electronics in the dash when the new speedo head is installed or by changing out the digital display at the same time...

They were all built in Toledo Ohio. Same for Libertys, new style Cherokees (now built in Belvedere) and all Wranglers. We still build RHD Wranglers. Most get diesels. in 2 years the new Jeep truck will get RHD for the export market. I remember the first time I drove a manual transmission RHD. Took a few mins to get smooth shifting. It's still makes me laugh when people move them around at work and jump in the left side and realize its a right drive and have to jump out and run around to the other side.

Jeep sold those here in the USA to Postal Employees for use delivering mail on rural routes. I had a bunch of co-workers who had them back when I was a mailman. They also sold right hand drive Libertys and Wranglers too. They were only sold to postal employees. Saturn sold a right hand drive SW1 and Subaru sold right hand drive Legacy Wagons too but you had to work for the USPS to buy them.

I'm Australian, so this looks ok to me. hehe. When I drove in the USA, it felt weird getting in on the 'other side'. One other difference you'll notice is the wiper arms go into the plenum grille in 'opposite' places so the wiper blade coves more of the drivers windscreen. Cheers mate.

cool :). that speedo was deffinitely swaped or something, you can already tell someone did something with it given to how different it looks from the rest of the gauges. japan uses kilometers, i did a quick google search for jeeps for sale in japan and it shows that all got km/h speedos.
@8deity
@8deity 5 жыл бұрын
It looks like a sticker had been put on top the km/h scale, maybe a requirement for re-importing to the US? Or just to make it easier for the drivers to stick to the speed limits.. ;)

i thought about that aswell, but if it would be only a sticker, then the backlight of the gauges couldnt shine through...but maybe it is and the one who did it simply didnt cared about that hahaha

That's one sweet Jeep, not too common here in the UK anymore, not that they where ever that popular to begin with. The 4 litre might be a good strong and reliable engine, but in the UK its classed as a big engine, and its quite a thirsty engine as gas (petrol) is certainly not as cheap, plus here, same as Japan its of a higher octane rating. Generally speaking UK and Japanese gas is a min of 95 octane for regular and premium is usually 97 or 98 octane. it also looks like the speedo has been swapped out for one that reads in miles per hour as Japan the speeds are in kilometres per hour. Hence why its a different colour to the rest of the instrument cluster. Damn I also miss driving over in the US, but your right, getting into a car on the wrong side for what you used to and driving it is kind of daunting at first, but you get used to it. Though having spent 3 weeks driving autos over there and coming back to Manchester airport, jetlagged and screaming around the carpark in 1st gear wandering why my car wont change gear is kinda funny.

I have friends with right hand drive cars, a Mini and a Wolseley 6 (drove that one). Visiting family in England, I have spent a lot of time in the left seat :). I did a short term mission in Zambia, where they drive on the left side of the road (as all of southern Africa does), and did a lot of driving there (in cars and on a motorbike). It does take a while to get used to sitting and driving on the opposite side.

When I first drove a vehicle with the driving position opposite to normal (while on holiday outside the UK), my worst fear was junctions and roundabouts being in the 'wrong' rotational direction.
