i first started using the book "remembering the kanji" and i was wondering if there were more books with a similar method, and then youtube recommends me this lol. Nice video!
@levant53784 жыл бұрын
A guide to remembering Japanese characters by Henshall goes by character etymology rather than Heisig's, and the book in the videos mnemonics. There are also six different categories of kanji, so books like the one in the video which use pictures to help reinforce the meaning of a Kanji can only really help with three of these groups of Kanji 象形文字, 指事文字, and 会意文字. The category with the most characters in it (roughly 90% of kanji in most frequency lists) is 形声文字, and you will need to learn most of these with etymology, mnemonics, or with 部首. The other two categories will also need to be learned with a mix of all methods. So be aware that a book like this will teach you a specific set of Kanji, and may miss some very common and heavily used Kanji due to the meaning being abstract and hard to convey in the form of a picture.
@Arzzed4 жыл бұрын
@@levant5378 would you recommend more RTK than this then? I'm currently at 300 or so kanjis in RTK. Should i keep going with that book and then try the one in the video?
@levant53784 жыл бұрын
@@Arzzed I did RTK book 1 back in 2017 with the help of the website kanji-koohii. And honestly, its great to understand the kanji building blocks, and really helps with recognition. But you aren't going to remember how to write the kanji unless you are writing them everyday, and thus its going to make exact radical recall impossible. But being able to understand most written Japanese in a very basic sense just cant be understated. So I would recommend sticking with RTK. I would also look at the Anki deck called recognition RTK, its has the most helpful 500 kanji (I agree with the chosen kanji having read a lot of japanese). This way it will help you see the more useful kanji earlier, yet you will still see the building blocks of the mnemonics from RTK. Don't think of RTK as the end of your kanji learning, think of it as a nice foundation to start you Japanese learning.

I used to use books like this until I realised I remembered more faster with good old (anki) flashcards (kana on one side + meaning if ambiguous, kanji on the other) + vocabulary cards to get the reading, meaning, and of course the most useful part, the vocabulary. The thing with overlaying drawings that vaguely follow the shape of the kanji has always seemed a bit odd to me, except for when demonstrating actual etymology. It's a nice idea, and appealing to new learners, but I don't know anyone who's actually used it for a longer period of time. Mnemonics are good, but ideally you should come up with them yourself, and then it's useful to at least be consistent in how you parse the components of the kanji. The 仏 on the cover for example is just a mess

@@artieschmidt3039 im learning at the moment, and so far ive been basically learning about 5 kanji a day...I make flash cards for them...kanji on front kana on the back, which the 音読み(おんよみ) highlighted....then I write 2 of the kanji in a notebook for better memorization, where I fill up a page (front and back) of two kanji that I learn so that I can have a good grasp of how they look and remember how to write it so I dont get confused when I see similar kanji like 語 and 話....also id recommend about 80 kanji before starting to try and get into vocab, im currently learning so if thats not really necessary then my bad, but thats what I'm doing....I learned about 80 different kanji, tried to learn one thats were unique with different strokes so I can get used to recognizing different patterns in kanji...once you learn like the main Key strokes you'll be fine in recognizing how a character is written which would help you recognize it as well.......sorry if any of this was repetitive im really tired😅
@zeymort39264 жыл бұрын
@@artieschmidt3039 James Heisig’s “Remembering the Kanji” helped me a lot. In fact all you really need is the introduction which you can read for free (the "Look inside" link on Amazon's listing). Draw upon imaginative memory and assign one keyword to each kanji component. This is how you will remember their shapes. Don't try to learn every possible meaning or pronunciation until after you can recall the shape from memory via the key word you used. Emphasis on what "you used" because that is the key to "your" imaginative memory.

Obviously I must study speaking Japanese, but would you recommend this book for a visitor? I will stay 6 months in Japan for the next several years. Thank you.
@lynn62974 жыл бұрын
As a Japanese teacher, I wouldn't suggest this. It is for someone looking to really go in-depth with the language. There are a lot of free online lists and resources to learn normal tourist Japanese. For instance, MLC-Japanese has a free pdf on this topic and there are a lot of videos on youtube. If you really want to get into speaking the language as fast as possible immersion and maybe the textbook series "genki" is something to look at, though the latter is a little difficult to self-study, I have students who did so successfully. The book is meant to get you speaking simple sentences fast, so maybe more what you are looking for. There are places where you can look at the first few pages of the text and grammar books to see if you can work with it. For reading the google translate app actually works ok, not perfect, but ok in most cases. Hope that helps.
