Never did I make fun of Ermey, and yes I know him from full metal jacket, mostly I've made fun of the show and the cartoonish character he portrays (not himself as a person nor his accomplishments). But sure, if I ever see Ermey I'd be more than willing to apologize to him for making a satire of his character, while I explain to him why his show isn't acurate. With that said, are you willing to do the same and apologize to me for calling me a "fucking punk bitch with a faggot laugh, prick who should stick a longsword up his butt", even though I never did anything to deserve those remarks. This test is rigged. If you look at the edge of the longsword you can clearly see that it's dull. They purposely left the longsword dull, while keeping the katana sharp. That's like loading blanks into a 44 magnum when testing it against a 9mm pistol. So basically it's another show that caters to katana fanboys.
@XdivineExp5 жыл бұрын
I noticed the same thing with the previous tests shown on the leather armor. They showed two weapons, and the second one made a "tink" sound as if it hit metal. I would wager that test was probably equally flawed. I also noticed that on the ice test, the katana flexed significantly more than the long sword. I would've expected entirely the opposite given long swords AFAIK are generally both thinner and longer than katanas. This leads me to believe that they also may have used significantly less force with the long sword as sharpness wouldn't really make a huge difference on ice unless it literally did not have an edge at all. Definitely seemed like a very flawed test on many levels that as you stated, just caters to katana fanboys.

@amoshall36904 жыл бұрын
@@jkjkhardcore666 literally a completely false statement, japanese steel was not very good hence the need to fold it, also lending to why katana was very easy to irreparably bend and break and required very high maintenance, european metallurgy was vastly superior, the medieval european knights technology for weapons and armor was leaps and bounds ahead of the japanese samura of the same time period no question. The longsword was just as good if not better than the katana(cutting), was way better in thrusting, and completely superior in terms of durability. Gothic and Italian Full plate armor was lighter, covered more, provided significantly more protection, considerably more durable, and better than japanese armor like Kozane gusoku(the most well known and prominent being o-yoroi, heavy and cumbersome, restricting movement considerably, also very primitive in comparison to European armor) or Tosei-gusoku(their version of plate armor they weren't able to field till the 1600s wayyyyyy behind the europeans and unless they were able to get the steel from traders, Japanese steel sucked in comparison to European steel and only thanks to Portuguese traders, along with efficient firearms a-la the Portuguese flintlock musket) but those japanese helmets SUCKED in comparison to a knights helmet, you had openings that a longsword could easily poke right through namely the neck and the eyes and occasionally mouth, meanwhile an armet would be offering CRAZY protection along with a gorget The weapons again the knight wins, touched on the katana and longsword already but neither is very effective against plate armor so step it up to the primary weapons(katana and longsword were secondary weapons on the battlefield) the samurai would predominantly use a bow and maybe naginata(sometimes a tetsubo) and the knight would be using a poleaxe(the BEST weapon of the medievel period hands down) but could also have access to warhammer and shield if it came down to the samurai using a bow Naginata isnt going to go through a knights plate armor period, and even if it did find a weak spot at the joint good luck going through european mail(which btw was denser than japanese mail and meant to protect not just from slashing but also piercing weapons) and also gambeson UNDERNEATH THE MAIL which well made gambeson would stop a sword and depending on range and bow, arrows easily, The tetsubo could theoretically be the only thing a samurai has that could injure a knight, but again, platebarmor was still very good even against blunt weapons and the tetsubo was a very primitive and rare weapon seen, also very SLOW and in regards to the bow, well 1st off its not going to be heavy enough to go through plate armor,, si it would be all but useless against a knight because of plate, mail, and gambeson The knights poleaxe(amazing freakin weapon with so much versatility: axeblade, hammer, and a spike) would eat through the samurais armor, it was a literal can opener even against other knights in plate so the inferior samurai armor stood no chance. End of rant, knight wins hands down
@buitreofficial77654 жыл бұрын
The Kanabo/Tetsubo was not a rare weapon nor would plate armor stand up to it. That’s like saying maces or warhanmers can’t damage plate. Secondly Katanas do not break in half due to differential hardening/clay tempering. Instead a structural failure manifests as a bend that will not spring back and must be re-smithed vs longswords that will snap under catastrophic failure. That is the same reason that Katanas keep their edge longer than other blades but are more prone to small chips on the cutting edge. Go watch some of Shadiversity’s videos on Japanese arms and armor. By the Sengoku period (basically world war japan for a few centuries straight) Japanese armaments were fairly neck and neck with Europe though I would say Europe in general will still edge them out a tad bit. Though, Japan did field far more firearms in this time period than any other country so any theoretical skirmish between Japan and Europe in that period must take that into account. Anyone who says Japanese armaments are useless compared to European ones are just as uninformed as weebs that say European arms were useless compared to Japanese ones. If Japanese weapons and armor were as bad as you say they would’ve been replaced with European designs in the Sengoku period. How do you know this would be true? Because they did just that. They started producing steel plate cuirasses and bracers/gauntlets and fielded/produced more firearms in Japan than any other country at the time. They even created full European plate armor before most decided it didn’t offer enough protection compared to a steel cuirass and the traditional chainmail/steel scale Japanese armor patterns, though some Samurai did take a liking to full plate and continued to field it until the peace of the Edo period. And no, I am not a weeb. I don’t watch anime, I don’t speak Japanese. I simply respect the Japanese martial traditions. There is a reason they were able to defend their little island from the might of the Chinese and the Mongols. There is a reason they survived the non stop bloodshed of the Sengoku period. If their equipment was crap they would’ve been crushed and turned into a Chinese vassal just like almost every other Asian country was(they actually almost were crushed by the Mongols at one point, which is why they redesigned their equipment and the Katana was created). I would put up just as long of a rant had you said the same thing about European arms and armor. Misinformation pisses me off and fanboys of both sides of this stupid For Honor fueled “Knights VS Samurai” argument are fucking retarded.

one thing most people do not mention about this video- the katana isnt true katana either because it flexes ... true katana has only edge from hardened steel, the rest is basically unhardened iron ... which means that if the blade bent, it STAYED BENT, it wouldnt flex back to straight (which is THE reason why katana is such a short and thick STIFF blade) this katana-lookalike is made from the modern high carbon mono steel, thats why it flexes nearly as much as thinner longsword (wallhanger) made from similar or same steel ...

There's some give in a katana blade, but it's basically a three-foot razor blade. It doesn't bend, it snaps.
@harleyme31636 жыл бұрын
all swords flex or they break. If you understand the principal, the katana is made by folding a softer metal into a harder metal. give both flexability and strength.. Spring steel is pretty much what most good swords are made of. the swords are made of Tomoghagany A red sand that forms in they're area not just iron, probably a lot of nickle in it too
@houndofculann17935 жыл бұрын
@@harleyme3163 You clearly know absolutely nothing about how any sword is made. Just watching Metatron's other videos would fix your ignorance. The Japanese were never able to make spring steel or any equivalent of it, and what the people above you were absolutely correct. The cutting edge of a katana was hardened which made it prone to shattering and chipping under stress, and the back of the blade was not hardened to make it resistant to shattering, resulting in it bending easily instead. The folding technique was used exactly because the japanese steel was such a low and varying quality that they needed to fold it several times to even out the inherent variance of their steel. Which was still a genius invention of the Japanese to make do with what they had. It gives it no flexibility at all, as it's not tempered and instead it bends and stays bent.
@codeydewey89245 жыл бұрын
@@houndofculann1793 you were right until you said the blades are untempered.. When you forge a sword, you harden and heat treat the blade then you temper it (No matter who you are you always temper your blades) what tempering on a blade does is it normalizes the metals grain structure to keep it from shattering like glass from just hardening. On the ice block the block had a "v" cut into the top for the katana but not for the longsword. Also the katana did not cut the ice. It broke it. Look at the slow motion. The ice is fully cleaved while the katana is still at the top of the block. It "cut" very little. Both swords perform very similarly when wielded by experienced swordsmen. Experienced with the weapon itself. In both cases the actual historical individuals trained extensively and were very adept at the best use for effect of their weapon. Also in both cases the armor was designed specifically to defeat the offensive weapons you would encounter. In most cases the person struck was not killed by a single blow as the armor protected them. And as always there are exceptions. But "one shot" kills were unusual and therefore very noteworthy. In the video the blows were not the same and I've seen tests where the longsword cut the tatami mats very similarly to the katana. This was with quality weapons of both types.

With the invention of coke, iron production was way higher thamks to the ability to use less wood to mqke iron, so steel swords became easier to come by. But that doesn't mean they changed in quality it was low grade steel. In Germany they were able to consistently make medium grade carbon steel plate or Austria after 1540,16th century. When they had to fold the metal in order to clear the impurities in some overly complicated bs process that left the swords prone to break anyway, hence katanas have layers and different types of metal inside, otherwise they'd break right away.

Ancient Japanese swords were straight and double-edged, probably derived from the Chinese jian. Toward the latter end of their time of use single-edged versions may have become more popular. After about 900AD curved swords started to appear, though it was as far as I know a little longer until the advent of the familiar tachi. I suspect, given this, that the initial adoption of the single edge before the curve marked the start of the techniques for improving metal quality that led to the katana.

And that leather armor was so thin it would not have any effective use in combat. Leather armor is a big misconception it was not used half as much as people think. The main use of armor was the gamborson, a thickly layered cloth armor that could stop swords and arrows( not a for sure thing but it did work) later chain male also came into play. Now chain Mail isn't as useless as his other video shows. The actual chain male is rivited. each link was essentially locked in place keeping swords and arrows from expanding the gaps in the mail. Then later the steel plating came into play. The steel was a extremely hardened steel and could not be pierced except by the most extreme circumstance. Which is why bludgeoning weapons were popular in the fifteenth century. Pole axes flails and such. But the point being that the armor could not be slashed and only in the most extreme circumstances be pierced. Your telling me to do my research before I state my opinion but maybe the guy you are defending should do his which is what my original comment was about. @@psychepeteschannel5500 i agree the ls has better reach for it's range, but they are generally a half lb or so heavier. Also katana curved blade and heavy base proportional to it's size allows for maximum cutting surface at the apex. Think of it as a flattened spear with more weight behind it, that cutting surface comes into contact first which increases the moment of impact, however to be effective, the blade must actually hit towrds the middle of the blade, which would reduce range even more so. The katana and ls weight less than 3 lbs... Iddk why you would consider this to be heavy.

It's a well known facts that knight swords weight 50 pounds and are as dull as Play-Doh. Katanas can cut through engine blocks and deflect bullets. Thats why they were used for hundreds of years and the knight sword isn't used anymore.

no. they weight 12 pounds you dim wit, and as sharp a razor blade too. the katana cannot deflect bullets or cut through a engine. that why the japanese used pike spears and other weapons in battle. the katana could not cut through there armour since it was made out the same metal. the katana was a symbolic weapon ( like how a musket is today) only being able to cut through unarmoured opponent.

The 762 round is a better penetrator, the 5.56 round is lighter (believe me I carried both in the cold war Germany) and that is why the U.S. uses the5.56. R. Lee Ermey IS a Viet Nam Marine vet. He has seen both rounds in action. I, however, have also spent thirteen years with the Society for Creative Anachronism. and know that he really needs better staff for archaic weapons. as to the fact that the round tumbles, that may be a mistake, at least for its penetration factors.

for the uninitiated I tell, The cold war was a state of tension between the warsaw pact headed by the USSR and NATO headed by the U.S. It was a nonshooting "war" in the fact that these two sides were opposing ideologies that kept a state of readiness to go to war at all times. The period of this cold war was 2 September 1945- 26 December 1991 ( roughly the period of the Berlin Wall being up). There were official combat actions going on at this time,(such as the Korean and Vietnam conflicts ) and there were unofficial fighting (in Germany and after Korea in the DMZ as well[which still happens today]). The unofficial fighting that happened will never be recognized as at the time it would have caused WWIII.

I don't know why people liked R. Lee Ermey so much. Not only do his "documentaries" always promote misinformation, but every-time he does a bit of narration, it feels like he's shouting at the microphone. If you're going to get someone who knows nothing about the subject matter to narrate, at least get someone with an easy voice to listen to, rather than one that grates. Preferably, just hire a host that is a scholar in the subject, and who knows better than to try to fix these so called "tests" in favour of 1 of the sides.
