Very hard worker, Anton! Great pick. The subway tiles are both a simple statement yet very stately much like the Japanese people seem to be! So much to admire learning about their wonderful country through your videos!

Anton you should not directly apply tile to any wood as the wood expands and contracts so the tile will as well. Tile should only be applied to mortar board made for tile ie hardiboard, cement block or drywall.

That was what I was taught in Sweden too! Here in Japan many people are taught different even the tile comapny who supplied me with the tiles 🥦

This is an overblown issue. As long as there is not water that regularly interacts with the wood you will be fine.

The laws of thermal dynamics and expansion and contraction will hold sway… it’ll be interesting to see if the vast change in summer and winter humidity and temperature in Japan will have an adverse effect…!!

I was scared that the wood wouldn't hold all the weight or the tiles but I'm glad it worked out. I really love the high ceiling and skylight shining through. Your home looks warm and cozy! Hope to see more of your house renovations. 🌸

Nit-picking maybe but shouldn't subway tiles be laid like bricks, each course half over-lapping the one above and below?

Tiles come from manufacturers with their own installation guide. Most of them with the proper glue type to install them and the offset % they need to be installed with. Those are guides that almost nobody follows for multiple reasons. Two of them being the need to buy more than "enough" because of cuts you'll need to do and the evergreen probably more pleasing to the eye 50% offset. In case of these small ones that shouldn't be a problem. The massive problem here is tiles being applied on a wood surface that is prone to expand and contract especially in rooms where there is a lot of water vapor and temperature changes as kitchens and bathrooms. Let alone the fact that in the most prone earthquake country in the world I wouldn't suggest using tiles anywhere 'cause you're just asking for the next one to jack them all up. I wonder if his japanese friends told him anything about that.

Well done! I love the look of subway tile, but I hate how long of a process it is 😅. Curious, is tile common in Japan? I imagine earthquakes would jack up the grout lines with ease.

That was a quick and dirty job if ive ever seen one for tiling, i am surprised there was no waterproofing for anywhere near where the sink is going to be.

Hi Anton, I’m traveling to Tokyo Japan next week. Is there an Akiya real estate company or agent you would recommend I talk to about buying an Akiya? I’m thinking about one in Karuizawa. Arigatou!
