Making a japanese chef's cutting tool starting from raw materials with many of the tecniques I have shown in previous videos like stabilizing wood and making liners from scratch.
The materials are:
2mm thick Nitro B Stainless steel for the blade, mild stainless steel for the guard and a stack of felt and paper liners, stabilized cork and stabilized elm wood for the handle.
With this build I wanted to try a half mirror half satin finish on the blade. I tought it would have looked cool but it looks a bit more like a not fully finished blade. This is a gift to my uncle by the way so I can always change my mind later and make it full mirror or (much easier) full satin. You never try, you never know!
Here are some of the videos where I go in more details about some of the tecniques used in this video:
Stabilizing wood: • Stabilizing Wood With ...
Homemade Liners: • Felt And Resin Liner /...
Stabilized Cork: • Cork Stabilization IKE...
Stainless steel: • Stainless Steel Heat T...
And here are some of the videos about the tools I used:
Vacuum pump and chamber used to stabilize: • DIY Vacuum Pump And Ch...
Hardening oven: • DIY Heat Treatment Oven
Tempering oven: • PID Controlled And Ins...
My lovely drill press: • ROSA Drill Press Resto...
Index of operation and materials:

5:22 Buffing the bevels with a cotton wheel and polishing paste

6:12 Check moisture content before stabilizing, see video above for more info
6:55 Pulling vacuum! Again, see the dedicated video for more info
8:30 Black felt and peach coloerd cardboard liners, check the video above for more info
9:54 Leftover piece of stabilized cork, there is a video about this as well linked above
10:00 Hadnle stack glue up with slow setting epoxy resin
10:55 Drill hole for tang and dowel

Video's like this really benefit from a text/verbal commentary at key moments to give a short explanation of the whys and wherefores. It's still entertaining, just a bit numb to stop the video and research what went on before continuing.

This channel is great, no unnecessary chatter, no pulling silly faces and telling stupid jokes, no bippity-boppity dance music and other unnecessaries that distract from the make. The focus should be on the creation and personality expressed through the piece IMHO. Yet another MASTERPIECE btw 👍👍👍

Beautiful knife! For stabilizing, after you release vacuum, you should let the wood soak for a while longer. most of the resin is absorbed after the vacuum is released, while the voids in the wood try to refill.
