This impact driver is at the top of our Teal Team shirt here: bit.ly/3liWXEB If you're an astute Makita fan you might be saying "XDT16 is not the US version of this tool, the TD172D is newer" which is correct. Should have been worded XDT16 is the closest to this and latest you can buy in the US, and also rated for the same power. But not "same"

Upgraded from an older 18v kit. kzbin.infoUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

Makita impact is the most durable, used it as installer to drive 1/2" x 6 inches screws for 10 yrs, still working, it got honorable retirement when i switched job. had hilti impact, was broken in 3 months (hex chuck retainer), and co worker's dewalt also broke within 6 months. after 10 yrs, the only problem was the clutch to stop doesnt work anymore.

Great video as always bro. Little mistake though, the td172 is not the same as our xdt16 the xdt16 is the td171 over seas. The 172 isnt out for the us market yet but it will most likely be the xdt19. The new driver is comparable in performance but has a lot of size and weight savings.

Just a small correction if I may: the project farm test compared the 171 to a Japanese 172, which is a newer model, not a Japanese 171, so he wasn't really comparing like for like. I enjoyed your video, thanks.

He evaluated a single Japanese impact, where he came to conclusion that Japanese model has to be better, because he haven't seen a "pro-sumer" tool made that skookum. i have a US xdt16 i got like three years ago now. Nothing is more useful at the junkyard; zips most fasteners on the japanese cars up to 14mm head right out. I bring the makita xwt mid torque too for bigger fasteners like frame, engine mount, and head bolts. Of course it does woodwork with no issues as well. I realy appreciate the reverse testing you guys do; i would agree impacts are most useful backwards. i actually appreciate the relatively low forward torque on this driver as i do sometimes use it to zip on 10-12mm fasteners snd its low enough torque i dont need to worry about breaking things. i just let it get two or three impacts into tightening and stop. Compliments tk the trigger.

I have both milwaukee gen3 and td172, the trigger on milwaukee is very hard, I mean it is not like it will leave fatigue but you just max out usually, trigger control is tricky. Makita td172 has very soft trigger that you can control very easily, and its trigger depression vs torque curve is very useful. I mean you can do light duty stuff without even lowering the gear if you want. Similarly hitachi triple hammer has a highly controllable trigger too, not as soft as makita but still much softer than milwaukee. The trigger torque curve is so great on hitachi that I can always use highest mode called P mode even for smallest screws. That was about the trigger. Now coming to the handle, milwaukee handle is much thicker and makita handle is narrow. Unless you have huge hands makita just fits in your palm greatly. It is not like milwaukee won't fit to your hand but makita fits much better so it is like a luxury car if you like. But milwaukee has a better heavy duty feel if that's what you're looking for. TD172 feels more delicate, like battery box is not rugged so you feel like it can crack, even though it is solid it doesn't feel sturdy. Also makita has like 8 speed settings which can give you some indirect ergonomics if you do very repetitive work. Btw if you care about durability, hitachi triple hammer is ip56 certified so it is more resistant to water obviously and I guess it should be more resistant to dust etc similarly.

Did my own testing with the surge, 7” half inch lag bolts into pressure treated 6x6, I used a half in anvil adapter and 7/16 socket, it would drive the bolt in speed2 slowly maybe 3-4 seconds per revolution but clearly right at its torque limits. Switched the adapter over to the standard M18 and it buried them in 2-3 seconds, the beans are undeniable. But with all that said I still ordered an all black TD172 cause it’s just too sweet of a package not to, the XD16 already feels like a toy in my hand I can only imagine how tiny the 172 feels. The surge has become my go to impact for all indoor work and really everything short of brute force jobs where I’ll reach for the standard M18 or even my XWT15, I have a feeling the 172 will replace the surge, time will tell…..

And I brought in the TD171 in March and love it. It is quite similar to your TD172. However, I shall have to disagree with higher numbers equaling superior quality. The fit, feel and satisfaction of use are very important. And long after the Chinese tool with the bigger numbers is likely the break or fry, the Japanese tool is likely to keep going indefinitely. The Japanese are at the top of the mountain with their reliability and durability. Chinese. not so much. So therefore, unless the Milwaukee absolutely left the Makita in the dust, wnich it did not, I would ask you to consider the points I have made above. And I hope you are enjoying tour TD172.

hmm you can buy it in japan for around 18,000 - 20,000 yen new or 14,000 yen used. so if you are in japan I would consider buying it there.

I would love to have that Makita driver but after 2 days in the shop it would be filthier than the usual anti-theft teal ends up.

Ok, a test I’ve mentioned to other people. A first gen tool. Let’s say a impact driver that was developed when current battery, 18v/20v etc came out except the tools continued to develop. So a test of manufacturers 1st gen in comparison to their current gen!

I’d like to see the Kobalt 24v standard, and XTR. The regular one never gets tested and the XTR has performed very well in head-to-head tests on other channels. However I way prefer your scientific method to testing rather than Jimbo and Billy Bob testing them manually.

Can you do some tests on the Einhell products? They have several models in their line up (brushless and classic). The brand is getting some attention in Europe in the hobby (towards semi pro) segment, never actually seen them tested the way you guys do it. I think in some countries they're being sold under the Ozito brand.

Would be interested in seeing the Ridgid Octane 1/4 tested before they are all gone. Maybe the subcompact of all these 1/4 impacts as well.

I'd love to see the Ryobi ones that are usually displayed at home Depot. Both the brushed and brushless. I think they're the affordable option that most home gamers end up seeing if they ever shop at home Depot so it's be nice to see how they stack up.

As a man who works with all different brands of tools in multiple trades, Ryobi always disappoints when it comes to durability. Expect them to break. Makita is the only brand I can always trust will work well for the price

@@terdfergeson23 I believe ya. When I visited the Peterbilt factory in north Texas a few years ago, I took a mental note that all the guys on the production line were using Makita tools. That place had all sorts of fancy equipment so they likely had the money to buy whatever brand they wanted, but they chose to run Makita. For someone like me that only needs tools for small projects in the garage, Ryobi gets the job done. I would own Makita if I could afford it but I'm just a student. Maybe in the future :)

@@NiSE_Rafter yes exactly. For light use the Ryobi is a great value. But Makita is an even better value since anything you buy will probably last your lifetime 👍 I started with only an impact driver and now I have probably 40 Makita cordless tools. It’s totally worth the investment

Can you try our the new skil 12v and 20v drivers? I use the 12v and it doesn't seem all that powerful but still snaps bits and can get the job done.

lots of impact wrenches claim more breakaway torque than tightening torque. This is not a wrench but perhaps the added torque in reverse is an inconsequent part of the design?

Now there are 172 comments here. Makita China and Japan factories both release different colours of impact drivers every generation and the colours from China factory may be different as I know. So still waiting for new colours from China factory such as green brown wine copper gold white...

How about the Hart cordless impact drivers from Walmart, brushless and brushed. Or the Hitachi 18 or 36 volt impact drivers I have each a 36 volt and an 18 bolt of the same impact driver.
