How do you avoid mould/mildew forming on your cuttings in such a humid environment? Also, do you have drainage holes drilled in the bottom of the plastic tote? Very interesting video! Thank you!
@NWMapleBonsai Жыл бұрын
I don’t put any drainage holes in the container. The potting medium is damp but not saturated when I plant the cuttings. I don’t water it after that. It is true that mold can grow on the cuttings that die. I take out any dead stems and leaves. The perlite is pretty inert so that reduces the growth of bad stuff. I once tried miraclegro potting soil and that didn’t work out well! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!

@@NWMapleBonsaiglad u mentioned about the failure on MiracleGro soils. I tried two batches with that soils and all failed. 😞 this time will use 100% perlite.

Great video! Just a question here, once the cuttings are set in the tote, do you open the lid every so often to let it breathe or do you keep it shut throughout the season?
@NWMapleBonsai9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question. I don’t open the bin to let it breathe for that purpose but I do take off the lid occasionally to remove any dead leaves and check for pests (sometimes slugs will sneak in). I may experiment next year with a fungicidal spray but have not used it so far. My results have been good this year with 80%-90% of the cuttings rooted. I’m working on an update video. 😁

@@NWMapleBonsai you mentioned taking the cuttings in like June or July… Then leaving them in the tote tell “the leaves fall off” in fall. So is that the point that you’re expecting roots and/or what do you then do with them in the fall?

Where do you place the bins please ?
@NWMapleBonsai9 ай бұрын
In a shaded area - zero direct sunlight. Thanks for your question! 😀🍁

@@NWMapleBonsai thank you ☺️, I have a little princess tree and a Katsura I wish to take cuttings from so I will try this method, thanks again

What kind of soil you use? Thanks you
@NWMapleBonsai5 ай бұрын
For the cuttings, I use perlite with or without fine sifted pine bark. For young plants I use a mixture of potting soil, pine barks and perlite. I suggest not reusing old soil.

If the bins get sun they overheat quickly and cook everything. I had two bins that lost months worth of cuttings 😑
@NWMapleBonsai5 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that. You are right! The bins need to be kept in full shade.

Do you water them or just spray
@NWMapleBonsai Жыл бұрын
I moisten the potting mixture and let it drain. I spray the leaves after planting as shown in the video. As long as condensation can be seen on the walls of the container, I don’t water. If I pop the lid to take a look, I shake the condensation on the lid back onto the plants. If you are in a dry climate, you may need to spray the leaves occasionally if you don’t see condensation. Keep the container in the shade and not in direct sunlight. Remove any dead leaves or stems.

How do you pronounce bonsai? Baan-sai or Bon-sai? I trust because you're a professional!
@NWMapleBonsai Жыл бұрын
In Japanese it would be more like bone- sai. But it’s just like in Japan you would say Hone-da but in the US we say Haan-da when we pronounce Honda. Great question!

I suppose cuttings are kind of a funny way to propagate Japanese Maples - but I take them pretty seriously. 😉
