Japanese Maple Root Grafting - Baikoen Bonsai Club Safer @ Home Bonsai Series.

In this episode of Baikoen Bonsai Club: COVID19 Safer at Home Bonsai Series, we have Lindsay Shiba walking us through a Japanese Maple root grafting. I know this video is a bit late in the season for us in California but, some of our North Eastern cousins still probably has a chance this season. Thank you! Cheers! I wish I had an update video. Unfortunately, during a wind storm that same year the graft branch broke before it had time to set. I think he will try to do it again this spring.

Beautiful massive acer! I hope my pencil-thick ones grow nice and big someday lol! Also, awesome! Someone who uses cactus soil too! I use EB and Kellogg cactus soils for all my trees. Lots of nice pumice and bark in them. Those hardcore 100% non-organic bonsai soils will require constant watering in SoCal or will result in dead trees...so I never use dems.

organic has there benefits and disadvantages same with inorganics. I'm personally seen better results with inorganics soils than organic soils but i'm a heavy waterer and heavy fertizilerer.

Unfortunately the graft was knocked off the trunk during a windstorm. I'll probably be doing a trident maple root grafting soon.

Thank you for the supporting words. Yes, this process would be totally easier during repotting as you can totally see which area you need to fill in. But this tree is super large so that was part of the issue with the root grafting.

How can copper sulfate be formed from copper wire in a pot? The maximum that can be is copper oxide in micro doses. To form vitriol you need sulfuric acid

Not too sure about the chemical interaction. But I’m thinking he does not want any interaction with copper possibly piercing the plant.

graft trees died from a falling branch during a wind storm. Host tree lost some branches, I'll see if Lindsay will be root grafting. If not I have a trident I have been grafting roots to I can show the progress.

Would love too, that same year during the fall we had a wind storm which a branch knocked and killed the grafts. I've actually done some root grafts on my trident that I'll probably highlight during its repotting.
