I wish I was fifty years younger. I would move to the UK and beg Mr Chan to be an apprentice at his nursery. To learn to see with his eyes, to understand how each tree is different and to be zen enough to totally focus while under the flight path of constant planes....what a man! I've decided to try something like this with one of the native maples, Acer rubrum I think, like you do with the English Field Maple. I cut back a thirty foot tree (8-9" diameter) that was growing up into a Pine tree, (and being out competed by it) and started digging it up. After several hours of digging a trench around it and cutting back the large radial roots I had to give up until the next day. Unfortunately it rained over night and the trench filled with water. Now I've been waiting about three weeks for the water to recede (it keeps raining every few days) so I can finish digging it up. Hopefully there are enough roots in the dirtball under the tree that the exposed tips of the radial roots will not hurt the tree. I'm considering backfilling the trench and waiting until next Spring to dig it up but I hate to waste all the labor that went into digging it. I've never done anything with a tree this big before. Thanks for the inspiration to try doing something with a tree of this size Peter!

Hello Peter It is always nice to see you in action pruning and repotting. I just wonder if you can do a video about diseases on maples. Have you ever had problem with diseases on the trees? Pseudomonas syringae or Verticillium wilt? I struggle to keep red and yellow barks alive. The turn black in a patchy way and eventually dies. I live in south of Sweden (EU hardiness zone 7) One more thing, Can you air layer Tsuga canadensis and Chamaecyparis lawsoniana "Wissel's Saguaro" ? Difficult one as I am not a plant virologist. Some Japanese Maples do die from verticillium wilt but I dont understand what causes this.

29:00 About "Inarching": I've been watching some videos on fruit tree "maintenance" and care, and one of the things I saw there was grafting quite big branches to anywhere on a tree. What they do is they take a relatively thick branch, about half an inch thick, strip it of the bark to about 1 inch from the bottom of the branch, and then drill a 1/2 inch hole in the trunk where they want that branch to be. They chamfer the whole a bit, and they make the edge of the bark on the branch to be at a 45° angle as well. Then they just stick the branch in. Also, the graft should not bee too long. I was looking forward to trying this myself. Damn the epidemic!

Hello to everyone. I'm still don't understand, how you can get tree like this to the smaller pot. When tree like this are in big containers, they have too many strong and big roots. And bonsai pots are so small. You cut every strong roots and put that to bonsai pot in one grow season, or in two, three or more? depends on tree and species, but hardwood cuttings ROUGHLY work about 50-70% of the time, given the correct circumstances such as weather/watering habits/sun exposure bla bla

I have had success with a few Florida maples (acer barbatum). In February I collected an 8' tree with a 2" trunk which I chopped down to 8". I then cut up the "cutting" into 2 and stuck them into some spagnum moss. It's now mid April and to my surprise, both hardwood cuttings have small roots.

Do you never seal the cuts with some kind of sealant on such big trees? Maybe it's not needed this time of the year or for this species of tree? (Also: Is petroleum jelly an okay wound sealant for trees?)

I seal all wounds larger than 1/2 inch. Petroleum jelly is ok, although doesn't last long in the rain, try wood glue, or a 'proper' wood sealant for best results.

If the tree is growing strongly I dont seal. Sealing helps to callous quicker though.
