Very nice episode Jon!! Interesting. 🤨 I’m not a grain fan but I do enjoy Mizunara casting. I’d try this one for sure!! 👍

Nice episode Jon. Neat series release from Dewars. Sounds like a decent entry into these different finishing. Definitely a recommendation to someone looking to tip toe into more out there finishes. I definitely like my rum finish scotches. Cheer sir and enjoy your weekend.

Thanks. Rum finish is hit and miss, this was very much a miss for me, but Balvine is fantastic. Cheers!

@@WhiskyNeighbour Yes very hit and miss for a run finish! So far the Lagavulin 11Offerman 4th Edition is a fave for a run finish!

I enjoy this lineup.... I drink the Portuguese Smooth and the Mezcal on the rocks during family barbeques.

The Mezcal would be perfect for a BBQ. Thanks for sharing!

Agreed. To someone who is just venturing into the whisk(e)y landscape, these are a good choice for a comparison of cask finishes...without breaking the bank. I think the Mezcal would carry the most appeal at my end. Insightful review, cheers! "m"e 🇨🇦

It is a big debate, recommend lower cost to people new to Scotch or, save up and buy a better bottle so you have a good experience. I lean toward finding someting worth sipping, even if not complicated, but affordable. Then, as your palate and experience broadens, then spend the money.

@@WhiskyNeighbour I discovered Waterproof (blended malt Scotch) a while ago. I have recommended it as a starter, and also for more experienced palates. Good price, and a very nice blend. I don't have many, but I certainly enjoy this one. Fast became a favourite.

Nice episode. Maybe the fermented notes you are picking up in the Japanese Smooth is Butyric Acid. Depending on the expression (and your nose/palate) it usually presents as parmesan cheese, green banana or pineapple notes. I usually get it in Craigeallachie, among others. Cheers.

I love that Butyric Acid note, and I also get it in Craigeallachie. There it is closer to roasted pinapple. Here it is more like parmesan cheese. Do you every drink humble blends like these?
@allenbt112 ай бұрын
@@WhiskyNeighbour Of course. But to be honest (and I realize this makes me sound like a whiskey snob) the most common place I have these types of blends, is in a restaurant. For instance, for whatever reason, Monkey Shoulder is nearly ubiquitous in restaurant bars in my part of the US. Love to hear your thoughts, on reasonable $ bar pours, in an episode. Cheers.
@WhiskyNeighbour2 ай бұрын
@@allenbt11 that would be a tough one, only because the price of Scotch in bars or restaurants around here is crazy. Still, a good idea to try to put together.

I've seen these but not tried them yet, as I was worried it might just have been a gimmick, but the Japanese one sounds like it's worth trying at least!

Very fair. This would not be mistaken for anything else. The grain is right there, at least for me. However, as far as humble blends go, I think it's tasty!
