Footage of three ships and one submarine of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (formerly the Imperial Japanese Navy) as they enter Pearl Harbor flying the Japanese "Rising Sun" flag, the Naval ensign. The Imperial Japanese Navy was dissolved in 1945 with the unconditional surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. Since WWII, Japan's Rising Sun flag has been criticized for its association with the country's aggressive militaristic past.

I want you to know about this This flag is called wook il go(The rising sun flag)was used by japanese army for sympbolize their militarism and retionalizing their invasion during the the world war2 Under the name of the flag, japan raised the the world war2 They invaded korea, china, and many asian countries and massacred people About 20 million people were massacred and women were used as sexual slaves Japanese soldiers cut people heads for having fun. did rifle practices by binding people on trees and shooting them and even burned them in order for their family not to find them In case of germany. they repented their faults in the past and give apologies to the countries where germany invaded. Also. Germany is totally prohibiting all behaviors related to Nazi However. far from officially apologizing to asian countries. the goverment of japan is denying their invasion and even still using the rising sun Some japanese did drawing the symbol on their face and waved the flags on olympic Another ploblem is that over 50 global brands are still making their products with this design without knowing the meaning of this flag

Tom Servo ... it is the current ensign of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces, in use since 1954, and identical to the IJN ensign used until 1945. The sun disk is skewed to the hoist, versus the “war flag” where the sun disk is centred on the white background. The Japanese (Ground) Self-Defence Forces’ flag has a centred sun disk, but only eight rays (instead of sixteen) with a partial gold border - maybe you were thinking of that flag.

You should be proud of the flag. Japan Navy was built to rival UK as world's 2nd strongest behind USA before WW2. War Crimes associated with Army not Navy. The Japanese Navy had tremendous accomplishments and made its mark in history as one of the greatest Navies in World History. All in 100 years of being isolationist nation. Japan should take pride in that in my opinion. Education, Ingenuity, Leadership, Vision / Foresight, Hard Work and Bravery made that possible. The flag can symbolize all these things. Those with common sense realize the Flag means more than Japanese Militarism. The flag is victim of propaganda in similar fashion to the misnamed "Confederate Flag" in USA. In reality that flag was a "Battle Flag" of one famous Army known for their bravery and accomplishments and was continued to be respected as sign of respect to the honorable dead soldiers who weren't involved in the politics of war but fought bravely. The flag had nothing to do with slavery but now that is the propaganda against it like the propaganda against the Japanese Naval Flag as a "war crime" flag. Complete BS in my eyes.

I'm Japanese. Japan considers the U.S. to be a trusted ally. U.S. also considers Japan the same. I do find it bit humorous how some get caught up in something as trivial as what is on the flags. Even the description of this video is caught up on what happened in the 1940's, while totally overlooking something that actually matter, like how their former enemy is now a trusted friend. Personally, I wish to see my country have similar peaceful relationship with China in the future as well. People, I write this out of purity and sincerity. Yes the rising sun flag is controversial, though of course the WW2 pacific campaign against the old Japanese Empire was without any doubt a brutal and grim conflict that lasted half a decade and the loss of millions. The war ended over 70+ years ago, yes the past was grim but we need to look towards the future. In WW2 there were millions of people whom were killed. For the record every nation from history has it's share of blood on it's hands and in history. I've been aboard one of the ships Shirane when it visited NYC, the Japanese crew were very sincere and nice. We have to remember it was those who were in the high ranks of the Imperial Empire who orchestrated Japan's invasions of Asia, Pearl Harbor and the millions of lives they claimed, not to mention all of the young Japanese soldiers they sent to their deaths for a dying cause. It's been going on for centuries, we must all come together and lay down our burdens and our anger. We can forgive but never forget. I'm also friends with many German people and they're the nicest people you could meet. It's not about race it's evil human beings that make the world go mad.

Tim Horton I only wanted to say that it was a beautiful flag, and I really didn't want to school anyone on world history but you forced my hand. Germany was a republic during the time of Hitler and WWII. The only "Imperial Germany" that you think you have a point on was the German Empire that lasted from 1866 to 1918. After that, Germany adopted the black, red, and yellow stripes that they used during Revolution and the Frankfurt Parliament. The swastika wasn't put on their flag until 1935 and lasted until 1945 during Nazi occupation. Now, while some parts of history may be detestable or even abhorrent to some, Tim, I can still appreciate the aesthetic behind a beautifully-painted piece of fabric.

My great father was there when you bombed pearl ,by the grace of God (literally) , he was at church and just getting back to the ship when the bombs dropped. He told me he saw many of the Japanese pilots smiling laughing and waving when they were dropping bombs and strafing . In the aftermath a random officer rallied anyone able and they started cleaning up debris and gathering wounded . The officer handed out bottles of whiskey due to the gruesome carnage . Picking up dead and body parts that seemed to be everywhere. He never hated Japanese unlike many who also survived the attack he always told me the Japanese people didn't attack pearl but rather the Japanese military. I've never understood how he had no hatred because the thought of watching my fellow country man getting greased while the ones doing it laugh smile and wave. We can all learn from my great grandfather's story. Happy to see once mortal enemies locked in ferocious war become brothers and unite for the common good .

It's not the first and only time the JMSDF has been in Pearl Harbor. Hell, I know for a fact they've even been to San Diego, California. The naval powers of the Pacific have often held exercises together with some being regular hosts for these exercises.

Richard Cline The Japanese Consul was still making us believe that Japan wanted "peace" 5 hours after the attack on Pearl started. A mistake, or deliberate ruse? So much for "diplomacy". Japan is re-building its military because they fear the Russians, and the Chinese. And it looks to me like they do not want our help anymore despite the long standing treaties we agreed upon many years ago. They steal our military technology, sell it to Russia/China, and thumb their noses to us. The same history that they followed before WWII started.

***** Yes, we are very aware of the "modern" Japanese mindset. Remember the quote: "Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it"? You just stepped in it. Remember this, there are a majority of Japanese citizens that oppose the increase in your military. They are big enough to stop you in your tracks in your Parliament.

this is not 1941 or 1945. The US and Japan have become extremely good friends, really close friends; allies that cooperate on a wide range of things. There is no tension or opposition of this ship coming hear. Now if this was a Chinese ship, then we should be worried. They are so sneaky, you never know what they might do.

We are not "friends" with Japan. We ended the war by bombing them, forcing a surrender and then rebuilding them. We may be allies, because a dog cannot hate it's owner. They shouldn't be flying that flag while floating over dead men.

Like you ignoring all the other administration's have had their fingers in directing the rise of the CCP/Peoples Republic of China (Mainland 'Red China') from lobbyists repeated jabbing pokes them that way since Nixon after corporate 'New Market' wet-dreams from their shareholders.

@@jlkoelker wow dude just wow.... the rising sun flag as seen has several points you need to understand 1) that flag has been used for a VERY LONG time as Japan's battle flag 217 years at the first use and 150 years official use 2) it is a different shade of red compared to the 1930's-1945 rising sun flag 3) the original rising sun flag as we see it in WW2 represented ALL of the Japanese imperial forces it no longer does 4)finally the rising sun flag as we see it today represents ONLY the JMSDF. now onto some points you NEED to understand about their entrance into pearl harbor 1) that flag ONLY covers their ships 2) there are no remains of sailors, outside of the wreck of the arizona) in the waters of pearl harbor thus they CAN NOT sail over the dead 3) the US government knows about the rising sun flag and WELCOMED the Japanese ships into pearl 4) those Japanese sailors most likely PAID their RESPECTS to the dead in the Arizona 5) their ships most likely didn't dock anywhere near the wreck of the Arizona
