It is not phonetically a li ga to U. The "U" in this case is an extension of "oh".

Yes. You are right. When we say "ありがとう", it should be oh sound. However, we focus on Hiragana in this video, so we did not mention oo sound. We will make another video to explain this method soon. Thank you for your comment. We appreciate your input!
