Your definition of weeaboo is incomplete, they also worship japanese people but don't give two cents about the actual culture and history, they don't learn japanese from anime, they pick up words and use them randomly just to sound interesting and smart, they claim they are japanese, they put japan as some sort of heaven on earth saying it is better than every country in every way and renegate their own origins talking bad things about their own country and nationality and refuse to acknowledge the bad things that happen in japan. THESE are the things that make a weeaboo so cringy.

@Rs2006REMAKEVids7 жыл бұрын
"they don't learn japanese from anime, they pick up words and use them randomly just to sound interesting and smart" This was my year 8 French class, minus the movie. We just learned some random words. No grammar. That's still learning a language, of course. If you learn vocabulary in another language, _you're learning another language_. In fact, you probably learn more from anime than you do just a standard textbook. In fact, I found that as I continue to progress in Japanese, a lot of the grammar points were already reinforced subconsciously in my mind from thousands of hours of anime and I just needed an explanation that linked it all together. I heard は、なる、が、を a lot, for example. And because of all the cliches in anime, there are a great number of phrases just lingering in my subconscious mind, which is why I can understand the gist of a good deal of conversational Japanese simply by watching anime in Japanese with subtitles. If you watch a massive amount of varied anime (like I used to, as a lonely high school student with too much time on his hands), you pick up more than just random words. You pick up many, many phrases, casual speech, even particle usage. It's all in your subconscious, just waiting to be tied together when you attempt to more formally learn the language. Point is, picking up words and phrases is still learning a language.

Yuta, if you don't mind, I'd like to comment on this. I think the reality here is pretty clear. The sample size is small, and consisting of people who either aren't afraid to be on camera, or people who would rather not say negative things on camera. Let's be honest, if you're on camera, you tend to say politically correct things in order not to be judged too harshly or come off as mean. And to top it off, it's interviewing Japanese. A more accurate opinion poll would be one that is anonymous. That's when people's true colours come out. That said, I think Westerners are far less tolerant of "weebs" as Japanese people in general. Nowdays in the west, the simple act of watching anime, or anything even vaguely or remotely close to resembling Japanese makes you a weeaboo. Yuta mentioned that people who dislike weebs simply do so to differentiate themselves and to consider themselves (who also may like Japanese things) "not like them" to feel better. I think that's incorrect in a way. Weebs are definitely a different type of person compared to people who simply enjoy anime, or manga or whatever. The original definition of a weeaboo (that has lost its meaning over time and become all encompassing) consisting of people way over the top, people who value Japan more than their own country. People who think everything Japanese related is "superior" and people who try to speak Japanese, or pretend they literally ARE of Japanese dissent even when they are not. They are on the extreme spectrum of things and will spam "kawaii xDD" or use other romaji based japanese words in place of English, even though they use English to say it because it's all they know. They don't even speak the language, or know how to write it. Sorry but this is completely different than a girl who just loves to watch her favourite anime or read her manga now and then. The people interviewed in this video don't know this. All they see here is people enjoying themselves, dancing, etc. It's not particularly cringe because they don't have the context that I described. Granted, please don't misunderstand me and assume I'm saying people having fun is bad. I'm just saying this is the allegedly irritating, cringeworthy behaviour that people don't really care to see, and this is exactly why if you ask Japanese people online, or on other forums, they absolutely hate weeaboos. Because unlike your interviewees, they know the context. Unfortunately, it's the weebs that are on this extreme spectrum that end up giving the bad reputation to people who just like watching Cowboy Bebop for example. And because of this, over time, everything Japanese related becomes weeb related. Therefore anyone who partakes in any japanese entertainment is considered a weeb to the general western population. Weeb being a negative connotation that was reserved for the type of people I just mentioned is now brought on everyone, and so people hate them for it. Both "normal" people who find it weird and cringey, and basic otaku that simply are into an anime or manga or something. Both parties don't like the actual weebs. I think it's important to note that people mostly don't care if they're called weebs because they know it's not true and it's become all encompassing now and nobody can do anything about that. What they don't like is being associated with the people I described, and I think that's fairly natural.
@ThatJapaneseManYuta8 жыл бұрын
+Squid Girl Hey, thanks for your comment. I'm not actually calling them weeaboos and that's why I always use quotations marks. I don't deny that people who 'pretend they literally ARE of Japanese dissent even when they are not' might exist, but I don't really see the point of focusing on them because there are way, way more people who call simply otaku-ish people 'weeaboos'. And if they don't use the word 'weeaboo', they say 'cringeworthy'. Just look through the comment section. A lot of people say, 'Oh, this video is so cringeworthy, I can't even watch it.' "Unfortunately, it's the weebs that are on this extreme spectrum that end up giving the bad reputation to people who just like watching Cowboy Bebop for example." Funny because that is actually exactly what I said about weeaboo haters. But the things is, most people are already judging you as soon as you are into otaku-ish things. Not necessarily BECASEU OF real 'weeaboos'. Those 'weeaboo compilation' videos are good examples. You can't really tell if those people actually believe that they are Japanese or not (I doubt they do, though). So I don't think the real problem is so-called 'weeaboos.' I think the problem is the stigma attached to Japanese anime in western society. And guess what, Japanese people probably don't care that much if some of them did say they were Japanese. But you care, because you have to prove that you are 'not like them' and that you just like watching anime. But here's the thing. You might have to prove that to your western friends, but you don't have to prove that to Japanese people, because we are really fine with people who are really into anime. Well, WE like anime ourselves, so what do you expect?
@squidikka8 жыл бұрын
+That Japanese Man Yuta I appreciate your response. Don't worry, I'm not saying you're calling them weebs, just that you're referring to what other people call them to be weebs. Also you'll excuse me if I don't add quotations every time I say "Weeaboo" although I will try. I agree that the stigma is the problem, but the stigma most certainly originated from and for weeaboos. This is besides the point however, as I said in my comment, because nowdays, "weeaboo" no longer means what it used to. Now the stigma and word has become all encompassing to anyone who takes part in Japanese entertainment, and that is certainly a problem and was not the case originally. You're also assuming weeaboos are the same as Otaku to westerners. They are now to the everyday man(thanks to this current stigma), but they never used to be synonymous. You're also unknowingly taking part in the stigma yourself by grouping them altogether. I think anyone who actually understands the word will agree that anime Otaku are not the same as weeaboos and I will tell you why. For example, do you have any Japanese who believe western values are superior, western media is the best, try to speak English without actually understanding English for the sole purpose that they believe English and western values are all that matters, emulating everything westerners do just because they think they're superior to Japanese, and so on? I'm sure you do. But do you consider them the same as anime Otaku, or Japanese who happen to watch some western dramas now and then? I don't think anyone does. In a previous comment you said the word Otaku has evolved in Japan to simply encompass something a person is into. In that case you could say they are western value Otaku perhaps, or japanese version of weeaboo, however to deny that there is a difference between these people and other people is incorrect, and that is the point I'm making. Also, "cringeworthy" is simply used because it makes someone cringe. It has nothing to do with whether it's "Otaku-ish" or Japanese related. A video of someone asking a girl out awkwardly, etc will get many comments saying it's cringeworthy, however this has nothing to do with Otaklu, weeaboos, or Japan. " But you care, because you have to prove that you are 'not like them' and that you just like watching anime." ^This is the part I'm criticizing, that you said in a previous comment in the comments section. There is no need to "prove" anything here. There is no contest here, and i do not understand why you are subscribing to the same assumptions as Westerners are because they are not the same. As I said above, the only thing I'm arguing is that there is a difference. A difference that was once known, and is now a stigma encompassing everything Japanese related. This has nothing to do with "proving you're not like them", because there is nothing to prove. They were never the same to begin with. It's like saying someone who collects rocks is the same as someone who collects bottle caps. This is simply not the case. They both share a common thing, that is, that they collect things, however they are different. Anime otaku may be into anime and other such things, but they are not weeaboos. I feel like you are contradicting yourself. And the reason is I think you don't fully understand what a weeaboo used to mean. You say that things must be proven to western friends, but not to Japanese because japanese like anime. Liking anime isn't what defines a weeaboo, however. That's the stigma westerners subscribe to, and that is the issue, and therefore the contradiction I'm getting from you. You cannot paint differentiating yourself from a weeaboo in a strange light while at the same time say that the all encompassing western stigma is wrong. The definition now is wrong because it is all encompassing in the first place and doesn't differentiate between these varying levels. It's like how people call anyone who says or vaslues anything remotely feminist to be a feminazi. There are some crazy militant feminists out there that make no sense and are actually hurting the message with their selfishness. But there's also those who understand the core values and just want the basic rights. Are feminists wrong for disliking the extreme spectrum on the other side? Are they strange for not wanting to associate with the term "feminazi"? It's the exact same stigma that Western Otaku are facing with the whole "weeaboo" thing. It's actually a problem facing many different groups of thinking. So naturally, people who already understand what the word used to mean do not like being associated with this current definition of the word as it is incorrect, negative, and doesn't describe them. Why is this a problem? And on a personal note, no, I do NOT feel I need to prove myself to anyone, so I'm not really sure why you're saying that I, personally, do. You seem to be making assumptions about me here, many which do not apply to me. Are you speaking in general or to me personally? They can claim to be japanese all they want, it doesn't hurt me or anything, that's kind of why people call them weeaboos, no? I'm not sure what exactly is "funny" here as I completely agree with your statement that both parties have a bad reputation. However you missed my point. I'm saying the extreme side of the weeb spectrum is what led to the term weeaboo, and also the side that weeaboo haters are looking at. They then mistakingly apply it to everyone who even looks at something Japanese. Hence the stigma being all encompassing, and hence the problem being described. Whether both sides are bad has little to do with the point I was making. I responded to clarify on the word's definition itself, the reason why people dont want to associate themselves with weeaboos, and that context is needed in the interviews, not on whether the stigma or whether both sides are bad, because that's obvious. Also, not because I'm an Otaku or a weeaboo or a weeaboo hater. I'm neither, actually, or believe I'm neither. I've watched a few anime here and there that friends asked me to see, but that is the extent of my relation with this. Are you saying me watching a few anime equates to being an Otaku or weeaboo? Because I do not believe that it does and to believe that it does is the exact issue we are both condemning; the western stigma that encompasses everything Japanese related to be associated with weebs, no matter how much depth or complexity the interest holds, and I think that is incorrect. I may be misunderstanding you on some points, as English is not my first language, however I believe it is not wrong for people to wish to seperate themselves from this word and have a good reason to. Although, I think it doesn't matter now as the word has become all encompassing anyway so there's not much that can be done. I think further that is the reason why people who deny being weebs are so adamant about it, because they actually understand what weeaboo used to mean, and do not like being associated with the newer, broader definition that westerners have now adopted. EDIT: This is all I wish to say on the matter of definition of weeaboo. I think we may both be arguing a different point and misunderstanding as a result. I'm clarifying on the definition, reasoning people don't wish association, and issue with the sample, and you are bringing the western stigma to light as a problematic occurrence that vilifies people who like anime. This is most certainly true, and a problem, but although related, not the point I was making with my first comment. I think I'll probably get flamed for this comments as A) Disagreeing with you, and B) Wrote lot of text on something as stupid as this. But oh well, good way to practice English. :)

Generally, Japanese people would appreciate it when their culture is being appreciated abroad, even if anime is a stereotypical distortion of their culture. It's a bit like how Americans want Hollywood to be enjoyed outside of America, or Indians appreciate Bollywood being enjoyed ouside of India, or Koreans appreciate K-pop being enjoyed outside Korea, etc. Most people aren't going to hate foreigners who appreciate their culture, but on the contrary, would actually be rather glad that their culture is at least being appreciated abroad in some way.

At the end of the 2016 Rio Olympics, when Japan was introducing the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, it included clips of Japanese anime and video games, with even the Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe himself cosplaying as Mario. I feel this way about Korean culture too. A lot of Americans seem to only be interested in Korea because of Kpop. They learn the language just to be more connected to Kpop but then feel disappointed when the country’s culture is not like the music or shows they watched. Same with people that are obsessed with Paris only and learn French just to go to that one city. There are tons of French speaking countries and other regions in France to explore. I’m American and every time I learn a language I like to consume all types of media from a certain country. Not just the cute colorful part of the culture but also the issues, controversies and ideologies that their literature reflects. It is kind of sad that most learn Japanese just to sound like anime characters but don’t realize that real Japanese people don’t actually go around talking like cartoon characters. I can’t speak for other countries but for sure in the U.S., most Americans that do learn languages(not many to begin with) do it for biased reasons regarding just one aspect of a country’s culture.

I really like this video Yuta, thank you for doing it. I might not be subscribed to you on this account, but I have been watching your videos ever since I first saw your video about Japanese people reacting to foreigners speaking in Japanese. It was a fun watch. Just like this one, it's more of educational though. As we all know, a pen is mightier than a sword. I've seen several news about these so-called 'weeabs' or 'otaku' committing suicide or harming themselves since they get bullied online. I think this video will clear it up. Even if they say that the interview-survey was just done with 6 people-- it still is a valid result. The question now is, "Why do foreigners keeps on insisting that being an otaku or a weeaboo is really bad?" Most of the time, they answer with, "It looks dumb and weird as shit." We get that, but don't we always have that hard-core supporter/fan in every organization? How about Korean girls going fan-girl-ing over EXO? When I say Korean, they are Korean. How about foreigners who think they're American since they know how to speak in English? Public opinion always has the power to shift the waves away from the truth, just because they're more expressive than the others, doesn't mean you have every right to actually bully them and persuade them to kill themselves. I really felt so bad when I heard about the cosplayer who committed suicide because he was cosplaying as a girl. People bullied him online and soon he was bullied by his friends and neighbors. Just because someone can actually do better or have better things than you or have a better self-confidence than you doesn't mean you have to corner them cowardly, using public opinion. Most probably, people here in the comment section would reply, "Stop taking it seriously." How about those who secretly took their lives because of what the people said to them online? We're not robots here, we should know that someone behind every screen reading our messages is a person who can get hurt by what you said. People online used to call me a Weeaboo online when the community started hating people who are very informed of the Otaku culture, but then, they didn't know that I am a translator. They thought I didn't know what I was spouting through my posts since it's Japanese, they tried to call me names and say that my Japanese grammar is so horrible. Good thing, I had Japanese friends online, and they said it was good and average, which made those haters stop getting at me. Now we have Yuta, and people are saying that this video isn't really reliable. To people who say that this isn't reliable, have you done any better than the one who made this video? At least, Yuta is doing something to know what really the issue is. This makes me admire Japanese people more than before. They just can't hate. If people would ask me, would I say something negative in front of the camera? Oh yes I will, it's my opinion, no one's opinion is wrong, unless you stated a fact and then you tried to twist that certain fact into something. Sorry for the long rant and comment Yuta, I just wanted to voice out my opinion regarding this matter. I hope, no one gets bullied anymore.

+shion chan "Why do foreigners keeps on insisting that being an otaku or a weeaboo is really bad?" I've been asking myself the same question, and here's what I think. People can be very judgemental when somebody does something that doesn't fit their cultural norm. 'Otaku' don't fit western cultural norm, so western people judge them very harshly. On the other hand, otaku' are just part of the culture in Japan, so we can understand them within our cultural frame. Japanese people can easily be as judgemental when someone doesn't fit our cultural norm. We just have different standards.

Only a close-minded person would say that. they are thousands of artists, genres, and songs in America, and to say that all of these artists, genres, and songs are crap, as if you have listened to every artist and song in America is typically ignorant behavior you would see in a weeaboo. Also weeaboos are the type of people who would attack you if say you hate Naruto or Fruit Basket. They believe everything in Japan is like what is in animes. they would, if they had the chance, change their nationality and ethnicity to Japanese in a second. they don't appreciate their culture or care for history. I believe weeaboos have a lot of self issues and self hatred. It's usually people who live in a bubble and in there own world and have never had the chance to see and appreciate the world. There's nothing wrong with appreciating or learning other cultures. It's just that weeaboo turn it into an unhealthy obession. You have people in America who are Japanese, and the only reason why people are friends with them is so that can learn Japanese and go to Japan. and if they are don't know Japanese it's because they are not "Japanese" enough.

+Comrade Nikolai Watamote was one of the most brilliant anime I have ever watched, cringe comedy at its finest, but I heard it really did not do well in Japan. As an uninformed foreigner I would speculate that perhaps the greater importance placed on honour over there might make them more uncomfortable watching consistently shameful behavior.. maybe it just hit a bit too close to home for its intended audience? You get the token goofy girls and pervy guys, and compromising situations are a classic (see - tripped and grabbed her boobs), but mostly these are just popularised tropes and the characters are quite capable of acting socially competent apart from the occasional personal mishap or surprise (ie. Noucome?). If there are shows with cringe humor the way the brits do it, doesn't seem like they where very successful, otherwise we'd of heard of them and be watching!

@jordanjacobson60466 жыл бұрын
Fanfan put it well, but it goes deeper. Theres the concept of 空気を読む, or "reading the air", where in Japanese, you're expected to read between the lines, it seems indirect, but when everyone speaks that way, it is direct. Its pretty clear that most of them felt rather uncomfortable, but its impolite to be direct about it so you have to look more at body language and tone. Theres this show called terrace house, kinda like big brother. They have 5 "judges" who comment on the situations, and there was one great example of this. This guy and girl were having dinner, and she asked his opinion of her, and he seemed rather positive, except for a small quip about her being messy. After, the "judges" were like "OMG he fucking hates her lolol".

+That Japanese Man Yuta 日本とアメリカ両方で育ちましたがちょっと意見を聞いてください。I feel that many non-Japanese think that as long as Japanese in Japan say that cultural appropriation of Japanese culture is ok then that means that it is ok to do. However most of the time when we are talking about cultural appropriation it is in the context of being outside of Japan.The people who are the most affected by cultural appropriation and Japanese stereotypes are nikkeijin, because Japanese do not experience ethnic discrimination when living with fellow Japanese. If you only interview Japanese in Japan, I feel that it will be very harmful to nikkeijin and Japanese living overseas. Your channel is very popular, and people who are not Japanese will look to this video and try to use it as proof that cultural appropriation of Japanese Items is ok, when the issue is much more complicated. Thank you

+12345blondie I actually think it will be interesting to show that many Japanese people don't quite get the concept of cultural appropriation. You might not like what you hear, but you can always defend your position if you feel strongly about it. It is precisely because cultural appropriation is a complex issue that I think offering different perspectives would be interesting. I"m also interested in what different nikkeijin think of cultural appropriation, especially non-American nikkeijin. I haven't met any non-American (especially non-English speaking) nikkeijin who said something about cultural appropriation.
@12345blondie8 жыл бұрын
+That Japanese Man Yuta Thank you for your reply! Yes, I think that it's important to consider how there are so many views, and it would be great to show people some different perspectives on the issue. I'm wondering if the reason why there haven't been any non american/english speaking people saying anything about cultural appropriation is because the united states has especially been going through a big political shift recently?
@ThatJapaneseManYuta8 жыл бұрын
+12345blondie I actually have a theory (which is not necessarily well developed, I have to admit.) I think when marginalised people say that something is cultural appropriation, there is resentment behind it. For example, if you are a minority in your society and get bullied in school, being called all those racial slurs, you naturally develop resentment towards the majority. And then when you see them casually adopting something from your culture, you think, 'They have been making fun of my culture all those times but now they are using my culture as fashion?' That's resentment. So you criticise them using the concept of cultural appropriation to support your argument. That's probably why people who don't share the same resentment don't quite get what's wrong with cultural appropriation. I feel like racial tension in the States is particularly intense compared to other countries. (Culturally-speaking; I can be wrong though.) And that's probably why it's mostly Americans who talk about cultural appropriation.

Even if certain weeaboos are obnoxious or claim to know everything about Japan, I may find it a little annoying, but still far from the deep hatred that seems to be directed at them. What I always wonder is why so many people feel the need to react with such visceral disgust and hatred to weeaboos and geeks, as if they all committed appalling crimes, or as if they all condone child pornography or bestiality. Maybe a bit of self reflection may be enlightening if the idea or sight of weeaboos makes them feel such "disgust"...

Even with a video like this of actual Japanese people saying that it's not an issue, Americans will never get it. That is because a huge part of American society is to judge and insult everything that doesn't fit your personal view, so you can feel better about yourself. Their reaction is the sensible one. If I were to see Japanese people trying to act western by dressing like cowboys and eating hot dogs, I would immediately feel flattered that they love my culture. I would want to share my culture with them and help them to better understand it. It's the PC culture's "cultural appropriation" crap that causes this environment of hatred toward people who adopt things they love from other cultures. It's mean spirited and sick. BTW, just so you know, I'm not particularly into any foreign culture, so I'm not being defensive. It's the same as saying it's wrong for little white or black kids to dress as characters from Moana. They aren't being disrespectful. They are expressing their love for the characters.

hahaha lol. You lost me at cowboys and hot dogs.

I think it's more likely that people reject weaboos because weaboos have a fundamental disconnect from reality, not because of some arbitrary condemnation by PC culture. People have a naturally low tolerance for such blatant delusion, in my opinion, which makes it incredibly difficult to watch people that try to act like cute anime characters. No one behaves that way in normal society, so it's jarring and unappealing to see, as well as creepy, for most people (at least in the US). Also, these people aren't doing the equivalent of "dressing like cowboys and eating hotdogs" because both cowboys and hotdogs actually exist, while high school anime characters don't. Besides, there's a time and place for everything. If I had a young child that pretended to be their favorite superhero or anime character, I would have no qualms with that. It's part of growing up. But if they are 30 and still pretending to be a highschool anime character or superhero, then...

I wonder if you know about the concept of 'honne' and 'tatemae'. You don't just talk about how you really feel if you're Japanese.

+Raccoon Child Surely we would see their true feelings in their faces while initially watching the videos? Even if they might have kept it polite when talking about it.

+Audio Crossing I wouldn't be so sure of that. Lifelong practice of not showing 'true feelings' should make them good enough in a situation like this. Not that they necessarily had any 'true feelings' to hide. I didn't find those videos so shocking that I would've had to show it on my face.

+Gillsing I guess they would not be that upset about people that like anime character/song/dance. Most people who dislike weeaboo actually have some kind of back story about it. But I guess if they start searching and watch/read everything about weeaboo they would eventually find something that they dislike about some of them.

This is why I want to visit Japan. Smart and humble people. I did cringe a lot, but their insight and appreciation that weeaboos like Japan made me think about it differently. Smart and humble people. So very refreshing when you've lived in the west all your life. They didn't even look away or giggle which would've been a natural response for us.

Japanese culture is just interesting. I love their language and history. I love Anime too. I would love to speak japanese and also write it.

Doing a separate comment since I made it to the end: The video turned out better than expected. Yes, I did expect them to trash weaboos. Why? Probably because I left that living style a few years ago, and searched confirmation for this. BUT: it's nice to see the Japanese being so supportive and nice about it, and it reminds me why I fell in love with the country in the first place. :)

"As a Japanese person, I am actually grateful that they love Japan." So sweet. :)

bruh, the reason i get trigged by some weebs is because they act like they know everything about japan and japanese culture but they don’t . and a lot of weebs really don’t know much about japan they just watch anime. they kind of assume that going to japan would be like watching anime and that really annoys me. like you aren’t going to go to the super market and hear people talking like cartoon characters.

+Someone you don't know I love how people are saying, 'Oh, those anime fans are so clingy' and then one Japanese girl comes along and says, 'Oh, they are nothing. We are crazier.'

casuals... Dear god... people actually talk like they do when they are playing video games I would make jokes with my friends that what if retarded people actually start talking like that outside of playing games on the computer and look here we have it.... KZbin has really went from being an website you go too to watch funny cat videos or educational things to being a meet up place for social outcasts.... This generation....
