I know this has been said before but to reiterate , Misa-san, you are the best language teacher period. Your expert knowledge of English truly makes you a better Japanese teacher. I have learnt so much more in the short time i have been following your videos than in the 40 trips i have made to Japan. I'm looking forward to being back in Japan in the next 2 months. All the best & continue the good work. I'm no way near fluent ,but, on my first visit to Japan i knew only 6 words that i used at every opportunity. This time i hope to enhance my stay.

Your video is a great reminder of the importance of culture when learning a language. More and more, I understand that to learn how to speak, listen, read and write Japanese may take me only half-way. The second half seems to be about understanding how the culture impacts all of it. So thank you for sharing parts of this knowledge.

いつもありがとうございます!「ほう」を間違って使うのは本当に面白いだ(と思う-笑)今回のテーマや話題はすごく大事でいろいろ勉強になりました。You address some really difficult and important ideas in this lesson. It's great to pull apart these kinds of topics and see different points of view and also the differences in looking at the surface meaning and deeper meanings. 動画の終わりに「ちょっと言いすぎか」という感じはぜんぜん Please talk more, haha!

Thank you for the great lesson. I don't mean to be rude, but might I suggest the use of extra lighting to make the video seem less dark? It can remove unwanted shadows, brighten up the video, and make the focus more clear. It's very common in vlogs for people to put up simple ring lights, or umbrella lights to better illuminate the face. I don't want to sound rude telling you how to run your channel I just think it's a small thing that could improve the video quality a lot and help you reach a bigger audience.

In english, we actually only rarely literally say yes or no. Usually we replace it with an equivalent: "sure", "sounds good (to me)", "that sounds right", "who knows?", "I guess so", "totally", "I completely agree", "Kind of, but ...". These imply varying degrees of agreement. In sitautions that require a direct answer, like a court hearing or important decision, people have to be reminded and prompted to answer a firm yes or no. Is this what japanese does, or does it go further than that?

Something has been bothering me lately. 好き is a な adjective, but I see the informal construction 「smthが好き」as a complete thought. I thought only い adjectives could do that, and な adjectives needed です or だ afterward.
@kotori_no_saezuri
@kotori_no_saezuri Жыл бұрын
い-adjectives don't need だ/です. Ex. Just かわいい is perfect. You could also add だ/です to affirm the notion. Ex. かわいいです/かわいいのです/かわいいんです/かわいいのだ, etc. かわいいだ is not allowed. On the other hand, な-adjectives basically need だ/です. Ex. あなたが好きです. あなたが好き is used in more informal situations.

Can some one explain how the phrase "あいまいな表現を好む日本人" works here? Why is the subject after the verb? It looks like "あいまいな表現を好む" is a relative clause, but shouldn't then be "あいまいな表現を好んでいる" to work? I feel like I'm missing something crucial here.

A lot of 'softening' techniques in Japanese, if used in English it's called 'hedging' perhaps from 'hedging your bets' especially saying 'I think' and at least in American English in academic settings for writing it's often considered by teachers as bad to do, or written about for in the workplace that it makes you seem less assertive, therefore less memorable in the workplace since people get awarded for being assertive, which as long as it doesn't go into a range that Americans consider aggressive, is viewed as a good thing. I don't know if the culture is the same in Australia, Canada or the UK but it may be much more similar than differing in opinion/softening. We generally don't use constructions about talking about a direction of something to create softening/slight removal from the topic that I'm aware of. The good news and the bad news is rather than the 'nail sticking up being hammered down' we're encouraged to stick out, so there's more freedom to be oneself without people feeling like it's impolite, but on the flip side if you're shy you can get caught in a trap thinking you won't be successful in life because being assertive feels so uncomfortable to that person... also people give unhelpful platitudes like 'be yourself' which is easily misunderstand as people don't have to change their personality to cultivate better skills or abilities and that others should just accept them as they are, which although assertiveness is valued a lot more in American culture than Japanese, there is still a limit to. I think a balanced view between being able to value assertiveness when it's needed but still being able to think about other's feelings and be considerate, still valuing cultivating oneself over blaming others for not accepting you, would be an ideal middle ground between the two cultures and that the west and Japan have lots to learn from each other in these regards. Thanks for sharing about hiragana times, its looks like a very helpful tool for vocab/kanji study!
