The retro atmosphere of Shinsekai makes it one of the most interesting areas of Osaka and Japan. I walked through Shinsekai's shopping streets with its traditional Japanese 'shogi' chess and 'Go' game parlor and its old-school video games arcades.
(This is an unnarrated POV video with ambient sound.)

So sad to watch all those arcades empty. People used to gather and play together forming friendship instead of now where everything is online and you cant rly bond with anyone. Arcade games will always be remembered.

Keep in mind this is during the corona virus pandemic, hopefully these places will be packed out after all this.

@@alexx9433 these places don't get packed anymore, even before the pandemic. Apart from a couple of arcades in Akihabara, the "retro arcades" are just old and rather depressing/seedy places. They are the real thing - old machines played by old people in low-rent parts of the city. Not cool retro joints for hipsters

@@JapanExperiences Yeah, everything has, unfortunately. There was a big, beautiful Yuraku pachinko building a block away from where I live, and it had a sign that slowly phased through the spectrum of the rainbow. It's now just an empty building. I don't even care at all about pachinko, but I'm sad that it was closed down. I don't even want to go to Tokyo, even though I'm just an hour or so north from there by shinkansen. I don't want to be sad to see beloved places gone, nor do I want to be bothered with the whole mask thing in crowded places.

Thank you for this video, it burn in my chest just watching, I really hope that the whole arcade sector does survive the actual crisis in Japan, Arcade are long extinct were I live, and I'd love to go back to Japan to play there again. PS :were you there on the morning for it to be so quiet and with almost no-one inside?

my friend these arcades are usually quiet and have only a handful of older people inside, as you see in the video. The days of crowded arcades with young people are long gone. Sorry but that is the slightly depressing truth!

The first and fourth ones interest me (especially the 4th) because not only do they have games I grew up playing but also ones I’ve heard of but never seen a machine for in person like Beast Busters 2 and Cobra: The Arcade. The second and third ones seem to have a weird vibe to them, though. Aside from the fact that one of em has a vending machine out in front with… “wands” and mushrooms in them, they seem like these “hole in the wall” places where no more than one person is playing there, and there doesn’t seem to be anyone in charge looking over the machines. I guess that’s just because I’ve only been to American arcades and never been to Japan before. Might stop by the 1st or 4th arcade if I get a chance!
@JapanExperiences

The first and last are the better arcades but all the places are in close walking distance so it’s fun to see them all. Also some great restaurants in the area.

I'm thinking of visiting Japan at some time in the future. Are there any retro video arcade game centers left in Japan and if so what are their locations? I ask this question because I've been hearing about COVID and how it's destroying the arcade and video gaming industry as well as other stuff. Also I would like to know as an American whether or not I'll be welcomed to those remaining game centers if I ever visit Japan at some point. I'm a big old school arcade gaming fan, and not those crappy new so-called video arcade games made mainly by Raw Thrills. The 80s, 90s, and early 2000s were the best in arcade gaming in my opinion. Do any of them have a Virtual On arcade game?
@JapanExperiences
@JapanExperiences Жыл бұрын
Yes, the ones I went to in this video are still open and foreigners are welcome.

Thanks! Can you please give me a list of retro arcade game centers in Japan that are still alive and well? I ask this because I heard quite a few closed down and had been destroyed because of COVID among other things. I'm thinking of visiting Japan for my birthday which is on April. I'm a big retro video arcade gaming fan and I've been like that all my life as I was born in '88. I love the oldies but goldies of arcade games such as Mortal Kombat, and MKII, Virtual On, and its sequel Oratorio Tangram, and I love Gunblade NY and LA Machineguns. The arcades in Japan surely can't be entirely dead yet like it largely is in the US and many other countries. I admire Japanese people and culture, and would love to learn more about them. I have many books about Japan and I'm striving to get the latest ones. Thanks so much. I'm thrilled that arcades in Japan are still holding out well in spite of all that's happened.
