Ever since my original sardine video, I wanted to do a video on Japanese canned fish. These are mostly sardines (iwashi), but also include mackerel (saba) and saury (sanma).
Also, nobody watched the original sardine video at first, but now it has become the most successful video on my channel. But such a modest success! So I have created these last several fish videos as an experiment to see if "the algorithm" might find favor with this type of content. So far, no success. At least I have kept my belly full of fish! We'll see how this one does. I like eating on camera, but I would like to stick to one of my original directives on this channel: To always strive to do something new with each video. Perhaps I'll try my hand at the video essay format-yuck!
This was filmed concurrently with the "Canned Fish Files" videos, which were one-off watch-me-eats of western-style canned fish.

Born and raised in Japan, Japanese mother, I grew up eating these canned fish as well as the canned Kabayaki Unagi (freshwater Eel), and I'm in my mid 60s now, and whenever I get homesick for Japan I crack open a can of these misoyaki or kabayaki fish and serve on a hot bed of steamed white rice along with some home made Japanese pickles. Here I Hawai'i we are blessed with many Japanese markets, so these fish are easy to find, and quite affordable. Thanks for the review.

I'm in San Jose California myself and it's decent for Asian markets, but I'm returning to Hawaii in less than a year and it will be nice being home .... for starters everything's going to be about 25%-30% cheaper even going to the same markets like Nijiya and Marukai.

A bowl of microwave rice, a can of the miso sardines or saba kabayaki, and a little green onion or kimchi, and everything's good. If you have an extra 5 minutes, moving the fish and sauce to a little folded aluminum foil boat and putting it in the toaster oven on broil makes it extra good on rice.
