I had so much fun conversing with Japanese deaf people. It gave me a slight peek into a completely different world. It's experiences like that that make me miss being a tour guide for Japanese people.

Nearly every nation has its own sign language: The USA have ASL (American Sign Language), France has LSF (Langue des signes Française) , Germany has DGS (Deutsche Gebärdensprache), Austria has ÖGS (Österreichische Gebärdensprache) , the UK has BSL (British Sign Language)... Some of them are realated, eg. ASL is a descendant of LSF, but for example British Sign Language is completely different than ASL or LSF. Fun fact: Basic word order in ASL is SOV, and ASL is topic prominent. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Do any of you know Japanese deaf people OR are learning JSL OR are deaf?

My son went to primary schools with deaf children in primary school so he learned it there. I also took lessons, but due to lack of exercise I nearly forgot all 😢. Sign languages are really fascinating. Btw: there are some very good anime dealing with JSL. The movie 聲の形 - Your silent voice and ゆびさきの恋々 - A sign of affection. Both worth watching.

Since i started learning Japanese language i got curious about other language related stuff and i came across a Sign language and watched some ASL videos and found them very interesting . i thought may be after learning japanese i will try learning some Sign language ...until i found out that ASL (American sign lang) is not a universal sign language 😔 , different places have their own sign languages including japan , so i thought , ok , i will try learning only JSL but then i learned through intrnet that japanese deaf people are little reserve with their community . that made me sad 😥😥and i gave up on the thought of learning JSL ....

Deaf people are reserved towars hearing people all over the world. That's sad but understandable. Sign Languages and Deaf culture had been supressed, even forbidden in lots of countries which made Deaf ppl stick together. But it's more sad that it stopped you from learning Sign Languages, because they can also be very welcoming to guy who are really interested into Deaf culture. If you reconsider learning SL, you should stick to the national Sign Language of the country you're living in. For Sign Languages, it's even more essential to talk, and when you're not living in Japan, you'll hardly get the chance to.

I've been learning JSL for maybe a couple years now and it's been a wonderful journey. This goes for all sign languages but realizing that it's not just your hands was pretty cool. Facial expression, roleplay, classifiers, mouth movement, etc. are all very important (I still struggle with this though haha). The sign for だめ is a thumbs up so using facial expressions and stuff makes it easier to understand. I think you learn more about Japan via JSL too. I.e Kumamoto is known for Kendo so the sign for it is Do (the kendo armor for the torso) and Niigata has Sadogashima so you put your hands flat beside each other to mimic the island. Please learn! :)

I know a few words because of the drama Silent, I highly recommended it. I have seen it thrice, and the second and third time I tried shadowing the signs and rewatching parts to get it right, it was a lot of fun (unlike the show, I cried all three times on a particular scene, lol). After that I learned other things on KZbin like my name and a few random words.

Interesting. So, do the deaf 'fingerspell' kana? There would have to be signs for each hiragana and then someway to say the same sound is 'katakana'ized', I guess. Probably also need a way to provide an on kun-yomi reading for new words. I'd be curious to know how it compares to the Chinese sign language.

They do have kana. However, sign languages are completely different from spoken languages all around the world. For example, Japanese sign language is not Japanese language spelled out in signs. It’s a completely different language. Just like American Sign Language is not spelling out alphabets in English but a completely separate language from English.

@@vonneumann6161 understood but there needs to be a mechanism to spell names, replicate sounds and teach spelling, reading and writing in schools, right? Any language needs a meta language to be able to talk about and describe itself.

Hi @silverletter4551. You don't have to add particles in 最近に and 喋るの. They are incorrect on grammar in that context. Thank you.
