Given the natural habitat of this crab, I'd call it TREE food, rather than sea food. It's basically a fruit, since it can be picked off of a coconut palm tree :)

During the Middle Ages, Japan invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom. The Ryukyu Kingdom became a Japanese colony. And Japan changed the name of Ryukyu Kingdom to Okinawa. And now, many Japanese people go to Okinawa to eat coconut crab, which is not available in Japan, a cold northern hemisphere.

would you want to be killed then steamed, or just thrown into the steamer alive. its commons sense. i guess people think its not them or its just a animal who cares. sad how ignorant people are. i guess if aliens, which arent real. but if they were and came here and they went to eat you. i guess you wouldnt care if they just steamed/cooked you. it wouldnt matter if they killed you before. oh if you had a cat or dog and i went to eat them. you wouldnt be less upset if i threw them into the oven before killing them.

It is my understanding that these Crabs need to be caught a couple weeks in advance of eating and "purged" of their normal diets, being fed "clean food" such as cormeal cakes, coconut, grains, etc. This must be done to make the meat more edible as I've heard they are quite nasty and stinky directly after being caught. I have heard there are a couple different types of land dwelling crabs that this treatment needs doing in order to be more edible. Now I'm sure the locals are used to them and may not do this but Western pallets would do them inedible without this cleansing. Because they are land dwelling and do not live in water, they do not flush out toxins, rotten food, garbage, etc from their organs then in turn their meat. They eat alot of rotten foods, meats, fish and even garbage if near people.
