It is such an honor to be one of the few chosen teams by Sensei Tanaka to play this arrangement. Every time you play you must try to give %110 of your sincerity and dedication. I hope that we make him proud with our attempt. He is a mountain in our taiko landscape. With appreciation, - Ben Miller

The yelling is part of the show. It's to give your team energy. Taiko is all about the energy, guys. And hearing it from the crowd gives us all the more energy to pound it out on those drums. Taiko takes a lot of work. Take it from me; I'm a taiko drummer myself. And I throughly enjoy listening to this. Makes me want to pick up my bachi and start practicing some more. (And white, black, asian, it doesn't matter. If you feel the energy, you can do it just as well and with just as much feeling.)

Has anyone noticed that the drums tell a story. Musically the beats and changes in rythem depicts how a tsunami is. First it starts quite calm, just like the beginning of a tsunami, then the drums become stronger as if a large towering wave was storming in. And as the "wave" picks up speed so do the drums. Until finally the wave crashes into the shoreline and the devastation occurs. The big drum with the two guys is most likely the crashing wave, just showing how monstrous the wave is.

I had to find this song, I remember really loving the portion of this song that is played in the movie Rising Sun, I'm so happy I found this video and got to listen to the complete song.

@sushicinema you said it--I'm sitting at home and listening to this on not-so-good computer speakers and I've still got tears in my eyes from how utterly amazing it is. just... WOW.

i was lucky enough to see this troupe twice here in boston many years ago when they first started traveling. first at an outdoor concert on the banks of the Charles River. i was so taken by their performance that i went a few days later to see them at Boston's Symphony Hall. one of the most thrilling performances ever. being in a concert hall enhances the whole perfomance. the drumming utterly "drums" through your whole body.

From the group's website: "Tsunami" Performed proudly with explicit permission by Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka. Fushu Daiko is honored to be considered worthy by Sensei Tanaka to perform this prestigious piece. In that case, they have my blessing :)
Video's like this bring tears to my eyes - wonderful, wonderful stuff! Thanks for sharing!

This, is wonderful! I really do wish I had the energy and physical ability to just hit those Taiko drums and be one of the crew, I really wish I could! This is amazing, I love the synchronization that the team has and how enthusiasum (sp?) they have! It is just inspiring and makes me want to move, it shifts my soul! I feel so much energy from Taiko drums I feel an intense fire in me that wants to burst and I don't know how to let it out and if I do I am afraid I might not be able to control it since all I feel is the erg to fight along side the samurai

@iverson25allen i agree !! some of us non Japanese, love Japan so much we're trying our hand at what used to be an only Japanese art form. to see me doing Calligraphy (i'm from Maine ... USA mind you) would look rather odd i'm sure, but one of these days i plan on moving back to Sasebo and god willing marry a Japanese girl there (^.^) !

The cheapest I've seen a new chu (that's the name of the smaller drums in the back) is about $400 to $500. Depending on where and how it's made, they can get to be upwards of $2000. They are usually carved right out of tree trunks, so they don't come cheap. We cut down on cost by making our own out of wine barrels, but the materials are still expensive, and they aren't as strong.
@AggressiveXSubstance11 жыл бұрын
Yeah figured they wouldn't be cheap but that's quite pricey. Did some lookin around on ebay they went from 3-4k a pop. I can't even fathom or want to know how much the bigger ones cost. Thanks for the info.
@AggressiveXSubstance11 жыл бұрын
How much would you say a regular sized taiko drum costs, like the ones in the back?
@richsail4713 жыл бұрын
@sorcerousfang bravo on that comment !!
@ajcsinclair11 жыл бұрын
The cheaper the drum the lighter the wood and there for the less times you can skin it. Generally the low end ones tend to be made in China and have a metallic tinny sound to it. The Asano Corporation have been making Taiko (drums) for 600 years and theirs can go up to about $12,000 for the smaller and $350,000 for their largest.

This is a great video, because it shows how loud they are. Especially when you watch it from the beginning. Is there any amplification? Where are the microphones? No? Then its the real deal. They dont need amplification.

Is the gong a traditional Japanese instrument or is it Chinese? If it is from Japan, what is it's name in Japanese? If know there are traditional Japanese gongs, but there sound is very different from this gong's.

Learning taiko on your own isnt that hard. As for kendo hell if you want to do it so bad and have the means and funds to do it go for it i say. It makes it all that much more rewarding.
