Japanese people and articles told me to avoid this area of Singapore. Apparently, it's very dangerous and even men should not walk alone. Living in Singapore for 4 years, I knew these people are wrong. I am proving it in this video.
The Konbu Snacks I had in this video are finally available in Singapore! Purchase them now at Cold Storage Tanglin Market Place and Cold Storage Great World City. They are low-calorie, healthy and delicious - which makes them great snacks.
- Cold Storage Tanglin Market Place goo.gl/maps/aPvaZUnrV2SVNqEn6
- Cold Storage Great World City goo.gl/maps/gEgBmpTDo9CX6s2T8
You will find yourself constantly nibbling them - they are just so addictive.
But as I said in the video, there's a local saying in Singapore: "low crime does not mean no crime". Just use common sense and beware of your surroundings and you should be fine most of the time. Enjoy exploring Geylang, one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Singapore.

Geylang is not dangerous, it's just unsavoury to some people because it's the red light district. Parents might not want to bring their children there, but I spent years in Geylang in my teens (around 10+ years ago) and only ever witnessed one occasion where an old man just straight up asked a lady, "How much?".

Hi Ghib, as a Singaporean myself it depends which part of Geylang you go to. If you stick on the main road, it is usually safer and free of sleazy vice activities which sometimes there are police raids in the area. But if its the street name starts "Lorong", I would say it is best to steer clear of the even number streets as those are the streets where vice and prostitution activities occur usually at night and occasionally there are police raids and patrol in the area, especially on the restriction on the consumption of alcohol and the brothels there aren't legal though prostitution is technically legal in Singapore, but soliciting and other various prostitution-related activities are criminalized, which is why it is advisable to steer clear of the even number Lorongs altogether. And from the video of the places you went, I personally feel it is safe because it's the main road, but if you were to walk pass in one of these Lorong in even number, very likely you might be harassed by these prostitutes (especially if you are alone), and it is also not safe for a lady as well especially for the notoriety of the area, she could be mistaken for one even if she isn't which is why it is advisable to steer clear of the area (especially the even number Lorongs), which is what you exactly did by walking along the main road section of Geylang.

I've been to Geylang many times with my family to eat the frog porridge! Normally the porridge is too bland so we will pour some gravy from the frog stew into the porridge and give it a good mix. Hi, the dessert you ate in the video is called Gui Ling Gao! Its a herbal medicinal jelly, people in the past used to add powdered turtle shell to the jelly because it's 'liang' or 'cooling' in chinese medicine (basically it functions to reduce the 'heatiness' in your body, as the more heaty you are, the more likely you are to fall sick) i'm not sure if they still add powdered turtle shell but the more traditional shops still do

Guilinggao (direct translation is tortoise jelly) is made of Chinese herbs (old recipe will have tortoise shell but the modern recipe do away of it) which is being boil for long hours and the liquid will solidify like into jelly (one of the herb has jelly like component). Geylang is a "red-light" district of Singapore. Generally it is safe. There are many Police cameras strategically placed at intersections and back alleys. Ghib, you should experiment with a female friend and let her explore the lorongs in Geylang with you following her from behind with a camera. That will be a better judge to see if Geylang is safe or not.

The main streets are as safe as strolling along Orchard Road. Even the lorongs (both even and odd) are quite safe, lots of condominiums around this area too. Now it's those little alleys that connect one lorongs to the other that's when it starts to get a bit dangerous and some of the more seedy and illegal side pops out it's head. But it's still relatively safe if u mind ur own business especially nowadays with so many police cameras everywhere. Now 30-40 yrs ago... That's when geylang was more notorious. Now it's just a pale shadow of it's former self and the articles u mentioned are probably written by ppl who visited Geylang in the 70s-90s

07:50 hold the plastic bag by the top with one hand, tension the entire string away with the other, and circle the string 1,2 circles round the knot and it will loosen itself up. as for geylang itself, it safer on the main street. as for the Lorongs (even numbers), you'll have street walkers and peddlers selling illegal cigarettes etc. so do be more careful when you stray from the main street

Ghib san try to hold the bag with your index and thumb on the top just like the way your holding on 07:43 , after that pull the green string tight on a reverse direction(if the string loop is facing right you pull toward left vise verse). Example in 07:43 the loop is facing left which you should pull towards the right. If you do it correctly it will end with only 1rotation around the "neck", much easier to untie those messy knot. Hope it helps

To open the pack just hold the green plastic string and turn it in the opposite direction that the knot was tied in. After a few rounds, the knot will loosen, really easy. Geylang is not dangerous for guys, especially along the main road. If you go into the side lanes, some of the working ladies may ask if you are interested to do business (if you know what i mean).

Nice video! If it's bustling then it should be safe but on the contrary, if it's deserted like the industrial areas then it's probably more unsafe than the so called "unsafe" areas highlighted by the media. I mean you could get attacked by stray dogs or no one would hear your cry for help if something were to happen in those ulu areas.

I trained Muay Thai in Geylang for a couple of years so I guess I could give my POV. Geylang is full of many many nationalities mixing together, with many character from Myammar and Chinese labourers, to local gangsters in their expensive cars. I used to have that mindset that Geylang is dangerous and shady but the more I went there the more I realised it’s just a place with lots of character. I do not have any bad experiences with Geylang and I’ve been there and walked around at midnight by myself after training. I even have a white as day American friend who stays there and likes it for the cheap housing and beers. Geylang isn’t bad it just isn’t sterile like rest of Singapore but it’s a good and safe experience to just walk around and explore the neighbourhood, the good there is good and cheap too. Just don’t be a dick looking for trouble and trouble won’t find you

Hi Ghib, the area is gradually being gentrified. I used to live in one of the newer condos there. Some of the even-numbered lorongs (around 6 to 20) make up some sort of red-light district, but it's nothing really dodgy. I feel very safe walking around those parts.

Geylang has some really nice food places, you should try the dimsum there. But I think like most red light districts in the world, it’s always a “risky” place.

To open the plastic packet, twirl the string the opposite direction of how it was tied. If you can't figure out which way, just twirl clock wise and if it doesn't work, twirl it anti clock wise.

Geylang is always well known for 2 things; good food & licensed "redlight" establishments. Also, to untie the hot packet of soup, twirl the string the other way around to loosen it ;)

To me Geylang gives Johor vibe because of the buildings and everything seems cheaper. There's also high volume of foreigners particularly Malaysian themselves and China. Those sellers you see are street hawkers could be Singaporean or foreigners and depending some have no license to operate or they do have license but just hate the fuss of having a shop so their makeshift shop are easily accessible for them to relocate elsewhere.

There are good numbers of interesting restaurants, a lot of religious practices, clubs, karaoke & of course legal brothel houses if you bother to find them at the side lanes for those who need the services.

Keep untying turn by turn the green string of that packet until there is only one easy knot left on the packet. Either clockwise or anti-clockwise as long as the string is untying each turn. 85% chance of success. Try it next time!

Tip on opening those soup bags: pull the string and turn in 1 direction until the string comes loose!

Its safe because you are walking along the main street of geylang, there are other streets you didnt really venture into the alleys and i believe you wouldn't want to. It is safe for you as a guy, because the prey will think you are a potential customer. :D

They will only use a plastic bag to hold the soup if you order takeaway. You can then add the soup to the noodle in the comfort of your home. This maintains the good texture of the ban mian.

you want those kind of noodles, you can actually find it dry in the instant form, the brand flying wheel has a very similar texture if you cook it right.

There is another location of Gong He Guan on Upper Cross Street in Chinatown that has a somewhat larger selection. Mango Gui Ling Gao is so great but they don’t have it at Geylang location.

When I visited Singapore more than 20 years ago, my family and I stayed in a hotel in geylang. This was before KZbin days. We found out that it was the red light district because there were some women standing on some street alleys at night. Love the vibe and the foods. Would go out at midnight and try the restos near the hotel. We never felt unsafe. In fact people were very friendly. If I get the chance to visit Singapore again, I will stay in geylang. Better than the city center or downtown where it’s the same boring western fast food and fancy restos.

what you have missed out, is the Durain fruit. in Japan probably will sell you frightening expensive. now you should Quickly eat as much as you can, BEFORE YOU leave Singapore. look out for hokkien mee, (too many type of cooking style) they all taste different. Geylang is now Ghost town, not vibrant any more. lost several very good food seller. they have retired.

Damn. I was hoping Ghib-san would fake an attack and video it. Just to give his fans a heart attack. Anyway, I lived in Geylang for about a year almost 10 years ago. Across the street was a "men's club" (demolished and redeveloped now) and late at night, some nice cars would pull up to the gate, and a sexily-dressed lady would trot out and hop into the car, and away they would go. I was propositioned only once (it must have been a slow night for the "lady of negotiable virtue") while I lived there. I have seen the peddlers of male virility pills. They vanished at the first hint of the authorities. But the REAL danger is to women. Less so for men (unless being propositioned would kill you.) And even for ladies, it may be more of an insult to their dignity - if they are propositioned by a drunk! Women who lived in that area and are NOT ladies of negotiable virtue, say that coming back late at night can be dreadful. They have been propositioned by drunk men who mistake them for working girls. Which may speak to how drunk the men must be, or a commentary on the lady's dress sense. This means that what this video needs is for a woman to wander the streets (or Lorongs) of Geylang, and see if (and how many times) she gets propositioned. And Ghib can video it. :-)
