I'm Japanese, just walking by. Thank you for your contribution to our (you and my) country. Sorry to hear about your boss being such a dick to you. We (Japanese in a traditional sense) used to be known for our politeness, humbleness, and hospitality. It's a shame how a non-Japan-born person like yourself had to expose such an embarrassment to the world to give us a hard lesson, and we should all thank you for that. I'm sure you know that many of us Japanese appreciate people coming here to learn about us, serve the community, and provide different insights. I hope we Japanese can remember to value honor and shame more, to retrieve our old reputation soon.

@@zombieRyuji If you think calling someone “retarded” at work is normal because it happens often or is common in the rest of the world, you’re highly intoxicated by typical Japanese collectivism mindset. If the majority is wrong, they’re still wrong. Tolerating such harassment is embarrassing, and those who don’t speak up about it, either.

Bad apples do not ruin the whole bunch as they say. You are in no way responsible for the unkind actions of another person in your country. All that matters is that we all together condemn this behavior and strive to be above it.

You can still be in a lot of good companies tho. Not saying this guy is wrong, he's completely right. But just remember there are good people in good company too. I'm a data scientist in a fintech company in Nagoya, it's a Japanese company. I go here through my gf cover since she is a 介護士 (kaigoshi). (You can bring 1 person who is close to you) It's a good company, high salary, lots of benefits, never say bad things, if i made mistakes they just figured out how to fix the problem. (which majority of them related to my clumsiness lol). No finger pointing, no whining, no b*tching, no anger. Tbf, i was scared of getting in a bad environment. But i would say, in tech, japanese culture is a lot, A LOT better than other working culture. If you're "low" level worker, salary man. I think you will find more evil companies. If you have high specialized skillsets, specializations, then you will be just fine. Lots of good companies wanna recruit you. I believe it's due to japan slow tech and stagnant tech industry. Software devs lacking, database very old, no data scientists nor analysts nor data engineers. If people wanna work in japan, i suggest IT comtor (communicator), basically business analyst with N2, explain the IT, tech dept to the business owners... 2nd choice is Bridge engineer (not literal bridge haha), it's like IT comtor but much more specialized and more difficult but pay a lot. I don't think these 2 jobs are out there in western countries, maybe they do but i have not heard of it till i came to Japan.

I'm Japanese but this is clearly an example of power harassment (パワハラ) so I'd report this incident to HR of your company or consult with some kind of external consultation desks (e.g.those provided by the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare). Power harassment is more recognized by Japanese companies these days but I guess the situation might be worse in the retail or food industry. It's hard to determine whether this is a cultural issue or not when you're not from Japan, but that guy you mentioned is clearly a dick and even Japanese would feel the same. The same happened to me. I think it is very common in Japan. I was a part-time employee, and the asshole was a full-time employee. He ruined my promotion, he convinced the cheft that I would leave the restaurant, and it was not worth it to train me, so I stopped my training, and I became his toy. He would wait for me everyday and gave me tasks I didn't know how to do, so he could call me stupid. It so hard to restrain oneself from slapping the shit out of them. The second job, the boss was forgetful, and he would always blame his faults. That hierarchy is sickening.

By the time i quit the cops were already on a first name basis with me because of how much I called them. The job was very isolating since it was just me. Some days it was like free money other days it was hell. Its one thing to have bad customers but having bad coworkers is something else. WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE SAME TEAM JACKASS!!! anyways working shit jobs sucks but the people can make it tolerable.

Respect for hierarchy and seniority is drilled into us (Japanese) from such a young age that the only ones who question it are those of us who have spent ample time outside of Japan. I disagree with a few things here. It bugs me when people say that they are just words and they don't matter. Then in the same breath they say that you should treat everyone with respect. If the words don't matter then there is nothing wrong with using them anyway you like and we both know that is wrong. The other thing is when people focus on themselves for the solution to the problem, "oh you can't control people". This is a victim mentality that only lets people get away with abuse. The solution is not building up your walls to the abuse, it is punishing it quickly and fairly. Your way of thinking is ingrained in us as children when we are dependent on others and if you noticed when you showed you were not dependent on the job and would not take the abuse the issue started being solved, all be it you used your boss as the solution rather than yourself as your co-workers agreed that you should have just stood up for yourself on the spot.

I lived in Japan for 8 years. I was translating so I mainly worked on my own but also taught English before that. I dealt with a couple doozies in that industry but they were ironically fellow Canadians. I think you were likely dealing with some napoleon complex Japanese style. The whole senpai kohai system is very hard to navigate. I did my best with it but never forced it. I usually always spoke casual Japanese to older homies and only used it with ppl I didn’t know and my parents in law 😅. Keep your head up dawg… hearing the train in the background makes me feel so nostalgic. I’ll tell you one thing.. no matter how well you speak Japanese or try to assimilate to their culture you will always be the foreigner. But use that to your advantage if you know what I mean 🎉

But the OBSESSION with everyone constantly asking who’s older, who is in the higher position, who has worked here longer etc is sooooo draining

People acting like this is just a Japan thing have never worked a day in their life. Bullying happens in ALL JOBS EVERYWHERE. You gotta learn to roll with the punches. I didn't cower and run. As for James, do what you feel is right, stay stoic, let this incident be a catalyst for the next phase.

When I was promoted to store manager, I hired my roommate as part of the team. However, I became overly critical and impatient with him due to his frequent mistakes, thinking that pushing harder would help him learn faster (was rude to him to many a times). This approach not only affected our working relationship but also created tension within the team, eventually leading to concerns being raised with HR and eventually got laid off from the company. This experience was a wake-up call about the importance of kindness and empathy in leadership. I realized that patience, constructive feedback, and understanding are far more effective than criticism in helping others improve and maintaining team morale. Moving forward, I am committed to fostering a positive and respectful work environment while supporting my team’s growth. In contrast, I had an amazing camaraderie with a former coworker who recommended me and trained me for my next role. Always stand your ground against work bullies, not just against you, but to protect other staff. Most people fear losing their job or to be physically hurt especially women if the bully is a big man. (which they often are) There are a lot of trauma and stress coming out of this, it's really not good for those victims. If you are the big dude take on yourself to step in. The truth is that most of those assholes are autovalidated in their behavior when nobody talks back, it works so they continue. I have seen it many time. I had never any tolerence for that, and I have a short fuse for bullshit, and I guarantee you one thing is that those people never had to deal with consequences of those provocations, clearly do them a reality check of what's gonna happen and they will shut the fuck forever. The laws and culture is a big issues, I'm not sure about Japan considering their respect of the hierarchy, but at least in Western Europe and the North America the laws protect you from harassment and the company HR knows this and the legal consequences. So here at least always report the issues to your Management/HR or tell them the judge gonna take charge of it if they don't. Otherwise, if you are a big guy like me, step in their face, remember them that when you step outside the profesional field into the personal, the consequences can be physically real... and very bery bad.. for them. They become very quiet usually after it.
