Agree 100%. Something bad is going to happen shortly between those two and it will be the zoos fault and will also be a great travesty to us who love gorillas. Neither gorilla is doing anything wrong. Shabani is protecting his troop which his son would be out of in nature and any other zoo not in japan. Every zoo knows to get the teenage boys out before this point, but japan is keeping kiyo and Gentaro in their families because they have nowhere to put them, which is putting their lives at risk and Japan knows it. But they don't give a crap because to them animals are expendable. Either Gentaro or Kiyo is going to end up dead and japan will come out with another bs story about what happened unless it happens on someones camera. Keeping Kiyo in there is asking for trouble. I know it's going to happen, when is the question. I had to pretty much quit watching these japanese zoos because of this even the Kyoto zoo because of Gentaro and Momotaro and the Haoko family. I am not being dramatic I am speaking the truth.

They need A LOT MORE natural elements added & more room! Poor things have nowhere to go/ feel safe when conflict breaks out - clearly! They also NEED A LOT MORE ENRICHMENT to promote their overall well being, challenge their minds, provide some fun & encourage curiosity! They're highly intelligent creatures that will only bump into more & more conflict in this tiny enclosure at the rate they're going at... and it's so concerning & sad. Give them the respect they deserve by creating a more natural environment full of elements ts that will keep their minds busy, encourage their natural curiosity & play! There's plenty of zoos out there that know this & have done a great job at providing an example to follow....

Shabani doesn't really have any females by his side. Although I think Annie. The famous gorilla Winston had his whole family by his side when he had problems with his son. The zoo should consider bringing a new female to Shabani. Because Ai clearly sees him as a dad and Nene prefers her son as Alpha

Yeah, not always. Haoko is a prime example, the family chases him screaming in anger alll the time. (esp if he goes after Riki or Momoko) I think half of the time we think Shabani is fighting/chasing Kiyo he's just trying to antagonize him so Kiyo will play.. he loves the chase.

Yeah I've thought a fair amount about the female situation but from Kiyo's side. Literally the only female there he isn't related to is AI and I don't think she is ever entertaining that idea. Yeah he isn't a silverback yet still a blackback but that time isn't that far off.

I am still mightily impressed by Nene though as she reads situations pretty darn well for if she has to move away because trouble is brewing or it is just a gorilla that happens to be getting close to her.

It's a wonder that gorilla families don't suffer ptsd from having to walk on eggshells around the silverback. That was our family when I was growing up: Creeping around our father, always having to gauge his mood. We seldom expressed ourselves, fearful that we might say or do something that would set him off. Watching the gorillas is interesting and I know they have a hierarchy that serves the whole troop in the wild, but on observation I wonder how many humans are socially and emotionally not very far removed from our ancient ancestors?

Same here, Mary. I have 8 siblings and it was always like that in our house, too; although, we were on eggshells with Dad AND Mom. Sometimes I wonder how we all made it to adulthood! I’m so glad those days are way behind me! 😊

Shabani is Annie’s Dad, Kiyomasa is her big brother 😊😊😊 I don’t think there are any females in Japan for Kiyo to have his own troop 😢😢😢. There might be a big bachelors group IDK 🤷‍♀️ but honestly there are no females that they can put in as his wife. Sad I know ,,, I wished Japan would communicate with other countries… Haoko is Shabani’s brother Annie is the only female that can be Gentaro’s wife… We need others to help and join with Japan for the love of gorilla’s 😟😟😟

Interesting...My take is that Shabani was seeing how far he could "push" Kiyo's *buttons* since he could very easily & quickly have caught up with "Junior" if he wanted to...Anyway, the best part is when the girls shooed him away...Who knows, maybe he was so hungry & anxious for lunch soon to be served, that he needed a temporary little distraction! HaHaHa🍆🍑🥑🍉🥦 Just like our human children, Kiyo is growing up *SO fast,* & while I'm grateful that he's strong & healthy, it makes me sad knowing in likely the near future he'll l be "losing" the only family he's ever known to learn how to become a silverback someday ...Wouldn't it be heartwarming if he ended up with Lope...☀❤

Question for more knowledgeable viewer. As junior males like Kiyomasa cannot leave the troop, as they could in the jungle, does the ongoing physical challenge/abuse by the dominant silverback have a negative effect on them in the longer term? In this case would a black back in the wild leave the troop and join a bachelor group?

If Kiyo was in America he would’ve already been in a bachelor group by now . He is too old to stay with the family group and could start drama within the family as he grows older. I’m not sure how the zoo will handle it but eventually he will have to be moved

Why do they not have a bathing or wading pool for them? Do they ever bathe? I would think that would feel good to them? The itching, maybe even put something in the water for their skin? Calm tensions? 😊❤

Gorillas have very little body fat and in general don’t swim very well. They get moisture from their diet and that is why fruits are important to them.

@53mandevilla Gorillas generally dislike standing water and wont enter it unless they have to. They cant swim, and they sink like stones. Humans are the only ape that swims well. In the wild, if a group of gorillas has to cross water, they will use sticks to measure the depth of the water to make sure it is shallow enough for them to wade across. So if there was a pool, the gorillas would probably drink out of it or ignore it.

& how incredibly SAD is that... They need a MUCH bigger, more natural enclosure w LOTS of diversity like hills of grass (they eat), streams to play in, trees/ logs & MUCH MORE ENRICHMENT! Many zoos out there know the importance of providing such enrichment to keep them happy, curious, engaged to help form bonds - NOT CONFLICT. It is sooo sad to see everything wrong happening here, incl the tension of having nowhere to hide or feel safe when boredom is an every day thing for such intelligent, otherwise gentle giants... Makes me want to cry for them

The people never stop talking. It’s very disturbing for gorillas, they are wild animals naturally living in forests with a surroundings filled with birds singing, wind in the trees, steps of other species. To say it briefly with natural noises. These humans visitors with their children talking non stop, laugh loudly etc disturb the apes. It makes them nervous and very disturbed. It is very bad !!! The zoo keepers should realize that and put a glass wall between the gorillas and these noisy crowds.

I agree with there needing to be some type of body of water in the enclosure - to add to their ENRICHMENT, which is a huge deal in keeping the mental well being a priority. A super important element with such intelligent beings. As an FYI - While they normally don't swim bc they'd sink in deep water, they absolutely do NOT hate water. It's actually a great natural element that adds another point of interest for them to investigate & even play in. There are a few videos of US zoos with beautiful enclosures w rolling hills, trees, streams & even the old school moat - where there are several gorillas taking turns jumping into it over & over again. One actually trying to swim/ almost floating on its back in almost waist high water. It's hilarious bc they keeping jumping in the minute they get back out again - esp on a hot day I think in TX in one of them. This video made me feel a bit of concern for these guys - esp seeing a lack of diversity in that enclosure & in the case toward the end, nowhere for that poor girl to go to get away/ feel safe should the conflict escalate even further. Hearing ppl laugh is disturbing to me bc she is clearly in distress. In the US at least & increasingly in some countries, they're seeing the importance of natural enrichment & diversifying those elements in enclosures - which not only exercise their minds/ improve their overall well being but also help to stave off boredom - which can also lead to conflicts like this. These are big animals that need a big environment - if you're going to keep them, you need to provide for them in a better way these days. Granted, they're no longer behind bars sitting there on concrete with nothing to do but be gained at, but this is also 2024/25 not 1824 & were a lot more knowledgeable about so much more. If these guys are going to be 'kept' they at least deserve our highest level of respect in providing everything need and might want/appreciate & then some...

Clearly in this troop of gorillas there is a lack of control happening in the group, the females prefer Kiyo as they have made it clear to Shabani on several occasions, they always support Kiyo, it is a very bad situation for Shabani who is the leader. Kiyo should be out of this family but one thing is what we want and another is what they decide there.

They don't have any objects that they can get curious to "play" with. How about a gorilla-proof piano or organ (musical instrument). Or a radio or TV that they can turn on and off and adjust the volume and can change the stations. Everything in their quarters is totally passive and boring in color... rope, tires, poles, ramps and ladders.
