Ga is used for any information that is unknown, or new information. When using "ga", the speaker knows the information/answer but the listener does not. Ha (pronounced wa) is used for any information that is known, or old information. When using "ha", both speaker and listener know the answer.

It is difficult to master the language at the beginning, this is one of the best Japanese Teacher that Japan Society has; she is giving her students opportunity to learn, explore and study depending on the ‘Basics’ it may seems that she doesn’t explain a lot but she does. If you could answer the questions and follow her up to Lesson 10 than you can do it for the rest of her lessons❣️❗️Good Luck🙏 You can do it❣️

JokestheJoker If you're planning on learning Japanese, take the time to learn Hirigana first. Once you understand how it all works, it's actually a really simple alphabet as it's all phonetic. Katakana will be a breeze after that :) Kanji is where you really need to sit down and so some serious study and review.

This lesson and the ones after can be harder to some because it's building upon what they are expecting you to already know from the previous lessons/videos so you may need to go back, review, and study respectively. Yes, I agree the videos aren't perfect and brief (even with new words introduced) with examples but they are STILL a GREAT FREE foundation to getting you started and familiar. If these videos are the only thing you're using to study then you definitely need to have at least two more sources to include with these videos in your daily study in my opinion respectively. What one path can't provide another surely will. Yea it sucks studying, but it definitely pays off because these videos and other sources are building blocks to forming your own sentences once you mix up your own personal vocabulary bank and personality to articulate sentences how YOU WANT properly. Don't give up and good luck to anyone reading this, anything worth having won't be easy to attain (unless you hit the lotto and even that is subjective). If you're gonna dedicate your free time to something, always give your best to reap the benefits later. Time is precious. Thank you for these videos JapanSociety.

No problem, and another common usage of ga is to introduce a new topic. Mukashi mukashi, ojii san ga sunde imashita (once upon a time there lived an old man). Ojii san wa totemo shinsetsu deshita. (He was very kind). in the first sentence, the old man is introduced as a new topic so we use ga, and in the second sentence because we already introduced him, we use wa. There are more usages of this particle, like special usages, exceptions and stuff.

Not quite. By themselves both are casual ways of asking. To make both words more formal, you would add "desuka?" at the end of them. So it would be "nande desuka" and "doushite desuka".

ありがとうございます for these lessons. I'm really enjoying them. It's getting tougher by the lesson though. I'd really appreciate it if someone could answer my question. I'm using an online dictionary. They provide sentences to illustrate word usage. So there's this sentence ここになんで来たの?(How did you get here?) Why doesn't it end with か but with the question mark instead?

I hope you get an answer from the teacher. Meanwhile I will try to explain. For example if I say: watashi wa gaikokujin desu means, I am foreigner. but if I say, watashi GA gaikokujin desu will mean I am the foreigner, ga is a stronger subject marker. I'll give more examples, tanaka san wa boston ni ikimasu, means mister tanaka goes to boston, but if I say, tanaka san ga boston ni ikimasu, means tanaka is the one going to boston, it's pretty simple to understand trough examples I hope you got it
