Using two full-length swords is something I've been working with recently within my own HEMA club and on my own time (having 15 years experience doing martial arts). Although historically dual-wielding (which wasn't very common at all, but there are some manuscripts from France and obviously scrolls from Japan, China, and then forms like Eskrima and such that use two weapons together), I find that -- if you have the coordination -- that using two full-length blades simultaneously in the way you've demonstrated is effective. Although these are very basic moves, there's a number of nice permutations you can do with a style like this. Parrying while lunging simultaneously, hybrid stances (such as sha no kamae and seigan no kamae with the sword close to the hip), and a number of other advantages. The disadvantages being less leverage around the strong of the blade if you're using something along the lines of a hand-and-a-half or katana (which, as I've stated earlier, has been described historically as being able to be wielded one-handed with a shorter blade) as well as issues with coordination. It's essentially using each sword in the same way you'd normally use a sword so the system doesn't fundamentally change, you just need to train yourself for the muscle memory. If we had the hypothetical of a real functioning lightsaber where all the weight is within the hilt, you sort of eliminate that first problem. I guess the only problem I have with this video is saying how you might sometimes find your blades crossed, which shouldn't ever really happen. The only time I could see it happening is with a heavier sword (like a montante) being swung at someone with two smaller blades where a parry with a single hand/ blade might not be effective, but with lightsabers, all the weapons are of the same relative weight, only varying slightly (and in fact inconsequentially) in the hilt.

Don't worry about the haters. It's all they are. Keep up these video's as they are great. And for those who say this isn't exercise then it's very clear they have never tried Kendo or any other sword fighting techniques. Stuff will wear you out. Too busy staying in mommy's basement being jealous of the people who can afford these awesome props. Its downright fun as hell. Guys like Dnjzzzz are just trolls. Different strengths & shortcomings, different preferences. as you can already from the speed Nonymous moves at, & how he mentions that you hafta constantly switch focus doing so, that already might prove to be too much work for some jedi in the battlefield. not everyone is an expert duelist & capable of be masters in all 6 forms after all (i'm leaving 7 as that's almost exclusive only to Mace Windu & darksiders). as for back-up sabers, you hafta remember that lightsabers are mass or even limited production tools--they're all one of a kind, & getting all the right shit together to build one ain't all that easy. the jedi don't go constructing one unless they need one.

That's an interesting point of view! Hadn't even considered that. Have you looked into the Viking sword and shield style? It's...well, the shield is used to strike and batter as much as it is to block. Kinda similar, in the way you're mixing offense from the left and right sides.
@fiaa017 жыл бұрын
Lunumbrus well, that a one way of seeing them. you'll find nearly all Viking swordsmanship is in fact made up by experts by "well, it works for this" being the principal of it. What about the use of Jar Kai against multiple people
@viper_41157 жыл бұрын
Think of Jar kai as this, it brings about a psychological aspect behind it that most do not think about when using it. Like the saber staff, it is hard for the average swordsman to keep track of the two attack points at once. So, say you're up against four people. Jar Kai itself is the art of two sabers and is usually mixed with one or two of the actual saber forms. In other words in order to fight off four people, mix shien for defense with ataru or even juyo for your attack. I personally prefer juyo/vapaad over ataru but that's my personal preference.
@FalconWindblader7 жыл бұрын
I'll discourage that. it's better to fall back to classic Soresu or Djem So as dual wielding is essentially very offensive, & with that, very tiring as it already is against even just 1 opponent. using the likes of Ataru & Shien is just too physically taxing & a very risky gamble. & by the way, Form VII in all its variants are superior to all the previous forms & i don't think anyone capable of Juyo/Vaapad would prefer anything else. it's the only form that is more a mental state thing than physical techniques, & furthermore, the only form allowing someone to move in a superhuman manner even by Jedi standards after all.
@cooldude37644 жыл бұрын
Viper 4115 as I understand it, you must be a magical space wizard in order to use ANY form. I've always been prone to having a slightly different view or idea than others when it comes to pretty much anything, choice of sword style and type included. Using a pair of roughly equivalent weapons is all well and fine, but in doing so I prefer to be somewhat more devious. If given the choice I'll prefer to wield paired weapons, but of different sizes, similarly to a daisho sword pair. The standard length weapon for my main-hand, and the shorter weapon (serving as shoto) for the offhand. While the use of unevenly sized weapons at the same time will generally be quite confusing for an opponent, it can go a step further than that yet, by treating each weapon as though they were entirely different not only in size but the style in which you wield them. The longer main weapon I would use as an épée, primarily used for stabbing or thrusting type strikes. The shorter offhand weapon would be used similarly to a wakizashi, taking care of slashing and blocking. The variation would be more or less easy to recognize after a short while, but that wouldn't really do much. It puts you in the position of being able to cover close and medium range entirely without issue, while the opponent finds disadvantage in either case. If they are using a short weapon, the longer reach of the main-hand makes getting in close very difficult, while the alternative of a long weapon makes up-close fighting difficult due to the broader arc the blade would need to transition.

The daisho style has its advantages, but with a very obvious drawback--the roles of both blades are fixed. you can't use the short blade mainly for offense, & using the long blade mainly for defense is just dumb. despite technically wielding 2 blades, you're practically using a sword-and-shield pair. The kali style covers all the above-mentioned drawbacks, but at the cost of heavier mental stress & being more tiring (both of your weapons play 2 roles all the time after all). So yeah, in the end, it really comes to personal preferences & the question of which one suits you better.

I use two Brood Gaurd sabers from Ultrasabers.com Because of how the hilt is build, I hold them do the blade is downwards, along my arm, it helps since I tend to stay full defense and then I suddenly switch to full attack mode. The only possible use I could see for the double strike is as a grip breaker. Say your oppenent's using a one-handed form you think you see them struggling to grip their saber after an exchange, aim for the weak of their blade and strike two solid Sai's one after the other, you might knock their saber out of their hands. Even then it's not really a "double slash" more like same arc slashes.

you should check out sifu Doug Marcaida on this topic. Realistically, there is no telegraphing any moves at all, there would just be two blades hitting you at different angles, and you would only have time to deal with one, but of course this is meant to be more choreographed, simply because Jedi don't have to read an opponent, so a light saber duel is much faster paced than a real duel. I personally feel that jar kai would almost be better for a soresu approach simply because there is a wider range and a better chance of deflection, like eskrimas heaven and earth. useless in a duel, but would be awesome for deflection.

Using both swords at once adds power.... is this guy a real sword fighter? It’s a known fact dual swords provide better defense but need both hands combined for power. Using both in a direction is perfectly sound. You’d have to be completely incompetent to be pushed off balance engaging with both swords. Powers not necessary really for savers but if crashing guards it is. You can push someone’s sword into them. That’s crazy thinking not to use both swords at once. It’s called combinations. Mix so your enemy thinks you’re going solely for power. My god. In a way I’m glad he’s training people improperly so that dummies don’t go out n play samurai in the streets.

There is very little historical evidence to support dual weilding of swords. Not sure why anyone would think it would work with sabers.
@TerraPrimeLightsaber8 жыл бұрын
+David Beck 1. There actually is a lot of dual wielding of weapons across many martial arts. Escrima for one big one, Chinese weapons like sabers and hooks are also often paired. Many indian sabers and clubs are paired. Rapier and dagger systems are dual wielding. Two long swords maybe not, but I bet it did happen. But there are plenty of examples of using two weapon at the same time. 2. This is lightsabers. They do dual wielding in the games and comics so people want to do it. As such, We offer the more down to earth and workable approach based on actual two weapon systems. 3. These are shorter sabers to account for the two weapons. Two long weapons would definitely be unwieldy. 4. I state all the time that dual wielding is not my favorite thing to do, nor does it give one a huge advantage. It is actually better left to people who know what they are doing a bit as the coordination can be confusing to the inexperienced in free play. Happy sabering! DN
@davidbeckbeef8 жыл бұрын
Nice detail. Thanks for the response!
@XxPlus6xX8 жыл бұрын
+David Beck Duel wielding swords would be pretty damn effective for a sword that can cut instantly through human flesh with no resistance. The opponent can't dodge everything, and you're most likey to get hit first if you're fighting a duel wielded sabre user. That being said, Darth Mauls design is flawed and would get you killed fast if it was real life.
@thedarkestlight45634 жыл бұрын
the main reason for that is transportation, it is easier to carry one sword that to carry two swords, also swords were made for two handed use, not for dual wielding. Lightsabers are different because they are lighter (weight), and easier to control,then trying to control two fairly heavy blades. also swords have a sheath, you need to take them out of the sheath. pulling one sword from one side with two hands is easier than pulling two swords out of two sheaths, with one hand per.

Basically same concept as Miyamoto Musashi. I don't mean to be rude, but unless he is a legit instructor of Kendo, Kenjutsu, Iaido or Iaijutsu, I wouldn't take too much to heart. Watching this should be in fun and not to be taken literally. Learn a real discipline instead and just use lightsabers instead of a katana. I only say this because a kid at my college thought he was a jedi and swung around a katana claiming to know how to use it because he is a Jedi and he nearly bleed out because he sliced his thigh open. I am an instructor in the martial arts and they definitely are not toys. Be careful guys. I am a huge starwars fan too, so don't think I'm dissing it!
@TerraPrimeLightsaber8 жыл бұрын
+Christiano Freebourn No worries. We are all Martial artists as well. But these techniques are not directly from Mushashi. They are mostly from double weapons like Chinese dao and sticks. So these are not based on the katana but hilt weapons that are more one handed in variety. But we do have a few practitioners of Kendo, Kenjsutsu, and Iaido in our ranks. Most of these concepts are pretty universal between styles. DN

got as far as "use them seperately but dont use them seperately" and "dont do this block but this is all the ways you do it", continued searching for someone who knows what theyre talking about..

Do you know anything about actual sword fighting

+ThatchyStorm 36 Doubtful otherwise he would know "dual wielding" two swords doesn't really work in an actual fight. There is a very good reason why when people's lives actually depended on being able to use a sword using two at the same time was pretty much never done anywhere in the world. In this situation of course it's easy to make any crap techniques look good against a very compliant assistant who never tries to actually fight back.

+Savvy Kapam (SavageMinecrafter) If you consider this exercise I feel sorry for you. And I'm sure talking about fictional swords in a fictional world really helps you turn into a socialite.

***** Martial arts is the equivalent for martial arts today, the hell are you on about lol. This has no value and cannot defend you if you were to be attacked in any situation "in todays society".

Sully Sullivan you do realize he has devoted his life to martial arts, and sword fighting. He uses lightsaber as a means to teach sword fighting to those who otherwise would not be interested.
