*When I initially came across brass pallets, I was gobsmacked by the prices of them. Now that I see the amount of time and craftsmanship that goes into their making, I find the prices more than justifiable. Living in the modern world and having access to readily available, mass produced (and most often than not), cheap products, has ruined us. Your paintboxes are gorgeous and aspire to be a proud owner of one, one day.*

chronicfish thank you. It’s true- I liken it to having a carpenter build a rocking chair or table versus getting a click together one from IKEA. A crafts person imbues their object with their passion and hard work and there really is something to that. I feel well lost a sense of that. Thanks for watching!

Brian Parnell there is a market, but it’s fairly niche- kind of like hand made furniture over ikea. There aren’t a whole lot of people willing to pay what the work is worth. Also it’s very low return for high volume of work. It’s a passion hobby haha I paint kids books for a job which is also very very little return for the amount of hours working. I’d be working all the time and never sleepin and have little to show for it. I do enjoy making them though. I think it would dry up fast if I was trying to sell them though.

@@JaredCullum I'm writing here after months, but I'm curious to know where you stand at this moment in regards to the brass boxes you have. Do you use them regularly still? Which one do you tend to reach for the most?
@JaredCullum5 жыл бұрын
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault so. For me. I love hand made boxes and I only use them. I love the weight and feel. I don’t care for mixing on plastic but being brass doesn’t effect that. It mixes like a decent tin/steel/aluminum box. There’s little difference between the surface and a “meeden” box. I like that it is a hand made piece of art that shows the craftspersons’ hand. That means a lot to me. I use mine and others I’ve traded or bought from friends only. I have a couple I travel with and I use a large one in studio. However. I just happen to love them- it’s not for everyone. Some people don’t like how heavy they are or how imperfect they are. I liken it to a dinner table. You could get a big box cheap one and love it or get a fine crafted one from a carpenter. It’s expensive and only worth it to you if you like that sort of thing. A good watercolorist could use a paper plate and paint better than me hahaha Is there a maker you’re curious about? I could probably mail you a box to borrow if you want sometime if you’re curious.
@EveBolt5 жыл бұрын
@@JaredCullum Thank you, that's very kind and generous of you! I'm still pondering the issue of palettes. I'd love a brass one that is just like the tin/steel/aluminium ones... I think. I'm definitely not a fan of half-pans and pans and I worry that most brass palette also have wells that are just like pans. But at the same time, most of my sets are pans, at the moment, and I need to make a dent in that stash before I feel good about setting those aside. (So I'm still not decided about what is my favorite palette type). How would you compare the pans (or tray) of a brass palette to the half-pans or full pans we can buy from paint companies?
@JaredCullum5 жыл бұрын
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault most of the boxes are made with empty wells a little bigger than standard full size pans so you could set a full size pan in it. I pretty much only use 1 brand for everything so I just squeeze my tubes directly into the well and let it harden or use it directly out of the tube sitting in the well. :)

Hi Tom! Thank you :) I love making them but I don’t sell them because it’s a ton of work and it would be expensive and I have too much illustration work to have time. Anyhow! You should! I’ve coached some people through it if you want help. It’s actually remarkably easy.. it’s just tedious. Painting is the hardest part but you could invest in a pro doing that part of you spend the time making something you’re proud of. I get the metal from online metals .com - I use .015-.02 nickel silver and common brass. .02 is a hair thick. Feel free to email me and I can answer any questions to get started. Jared.Cullum@gmail.com If you don’t have any tools it will likely cost about as much to make one as to buy one. Although you could make. A bunch. Harbor freight has a lot of cheap tools. It’s basically like working with heavy card stock paper when you have the tools.

It's very time consuming but fun and not as difficult as you'd think. Just tedious.

@@JaredCullum Hey, I'm in the same boat. I moved here 3-ish years ago (with kids too) and my partner worries because I never go anywhere (I'm a writer, so I'm such a hermit). I followed you on insta if you want to chat in a less public place--(I think insta has private messaging, but not sure.) Sewickly is only about 40 minutes travel for me, so taking a class there is totally doable and I've been hoping to find just such a thing, but wasn't sure where to start. I did not know about Victor Beltran's group, but that might be good for me to try. I'm VERY new to art in general but I think I'm making a lot of progress. My goal is to evolve a looser style but it really seems like my brain likes to focus on detail for now. I would love to make one of these at some point, if that wouldn't be too much of an imposition. So nice of you to offer. I'm currently doing inktober (in watercolor and some digital stuff) to try to push myself harder. Anyway, I was excited to find another person interested in watercolor and gouache that's local--especially someone who is also very interested in exploring all kinds of making/art. Interesting to see this, it's something I've considered making recently. When you hammer out the large rounds why don't you heat to red hot and then anneal? Hi Jared - I really enjoyed watching you build the Binning Munro style brass palette. I would like to build one for my own use. I am a trained machinist as well as autobody painter. What I was hoping is that you could tell me the dimensions of the box.
@JaredCullum4 жыл бұрын
Sure :) You should be able to do it no problem! It's 9.5x4 on the outside. I did that measurement based off of what Craig Young has his measurement listed as back when I was making it.

Thank you! :) I think it was bernzomatic. Whichever the brand was at the local hardware store. Silver solder like you would use in plumbing.

The big one is cute. Aspiring artist here. Can you please share the design template if you have. Here in India they are so expensive. I got to see how I can make it from a local shop here.. And probably they won't be able to do exactly but I kept wondering how to get those wells made. So you think if I reach a metal worked they can it for like less price. I mean just a box and coating. I was thinking if I can fix a cheap plastic wells giving a space for them and just use the wells for mixing kind..
@JaredCullum10 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I don't really have a template, per say. I just made a handful of cardstock versions until I got the design I wanted. That's what I would reccomend if you're thinking of starting somewhere with it. Good luck!

It may hold for a while- but I don't know how long. It's tough to get that stuff to stick to brass, even if you use an etching primer.

@JaredCullum5 жыл бұрын
Jake Freauff thanks for watching! You could totally do it if you wanted to. It’s very tedious but not very difficult. Especially with some practice with the tools. So- actually there is already a brass box maker who made a video on that! Look up brass watercolor box and you’ll find videos from a newer box maker on the uk. He shows the process pretty well. I can answer any specific questions you have over email if you want. Jared.cullum at gmail

Any reason you use a blowtorch vs using a soldering iron and silver solder?
@JaredCullum11 ай бұрын
I am not a metal worker so someone else would probably be better at advising. For me- I could never get enough area hot enough with an iron. The torch gently back and forth raises the temperature really fast and often too fast but it gets it there quick if you time it right. Obviously from the video- I don't have any idea what I'm doing. At the time I was going off of youtube tutorials on "sweating" pipes for plumbing with a torch. I just copied what they did with a torch and two pipes.

Ahhh, maybe easier to chop a brush to fit a box;) But to be serious, fantastic job. I've a brass Roberson box which I enjoy beyond just being practical. Hand made. Know I know how much work went in to making the box. Starts me wondering about all those non-PC sable coats hidden away in wardrobes.....brushes next?

@@JaredCullum re the brushes, you could push the boat out and do as the Victorians did until they decided it was unacceptable, use the hair of very young children. I'm thinking the harvesting of kids hair on an industrial scale was totally unacceptable but on domestic scale, not a problem. Thing is you can buy sable but not kids hair brushes so its bespoke. Cheaper than sable too!

Thanks for posting the video. I've thought about trying my hand at building one, and you've inspired me to actually do it. One question (at the moment...), what type of brass did you use? Onlinemetals.com lists 5 types, C260 soft temper, C260, C280, C353, C464. I'm guessing plain old C260? Thanks!

Hi Jared. I've made a start on making brass paintboxes. I'd like to send you a few photos and perhaps get your advice/feedback. Is there a way for me to do that. Email address, for example? I'm finding the hardest part is making the top and bottom the same exact size. Is there a trick? Also, I'm curious to know how you made the interior pans. Did you cut strips and then notch them so they'd fit together and stand upright? I don't see how you can cut each individual side and get them to stand upright for soldering. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
@JaredCullum5 жыл бұрын
Robert C Spindel hello! Yes- email jared.cullum@gmail.com Yes- it’s difficult. Are you using a brake? To bend it? It’s not easy and takes a fair amount a trial and error and then filing to get things to fit. Yes on the well. Long pieces notched as best I can. You could save a lot of time if you get those pieces laser cut but I did them with small triangles. Look up making a brass box. There’s an English fellow who made a video specifically on making the wells, that’s why I didn’t include it. Let me know in an email where you are at and what questions you have going forward!

A couple of notes from a plumber. You really shouldn't be hammering on files. Being hardened they will really mess you up if/when you shatter one. Invest in a $2 cold chisel instead You might not find the flux/soldering process so finicky if you get a more powerful torch head. Bringing flux up to heat slowly gives it more time to go sour. Otherwise, good work. I've been thinking about making this style for myself
@JaredCullum5 жыл бұрын
reallifeistoflat fascinating. Thank you so much for the tips. I’ll definitely use the advice in the future. You should! It’s not terrible hard- just time consuming to get it right. You definitely have an advantage understanding the tools and materials better.

mochabubble two part epoxy primer and topcoat. I use KlassKote epoxy paint. I’m actually in the middle of rebuilding a 100 year old box. I rebuilt it and I’m stripping and sanding it. I’ll be painting it soon. I’m recording the process for a new video. I’ll try to explain the epoxy part in that. :) thanks for watching.

Would you actually make and sell the larger of the 2 boxes?
@JaredCullum4 жыл бұрын
Daniel Gilkarov i don’t have enough materials and to get it plus the time would have to be fairly expensive to buy. There are some great palette makers out there already though that do custom orders. Like pa petite palette, little brass box, Craig young and others. Brass palette India makes a solid box and is a little cheaper. La petite palette is often running sales.

I wonder if brass powder coats. Harbor freight sells a kit for powder coating.

I think it would as long as it was low temp. If you hear it hotter than the silver solder the joints will melt. I know someone who took a box to an automotive powder cost place and they melted the solder joints accidentally.

Wow! Amazing craftsmanship! I definitely would not have the patience for this. I recently tried making my own picture frame to avoid custom framing. The cost of materials was not bad at all, but factoring in the time I spent researching Japanese handsaws, assembling, and then troubleshooting, it would have been way cheaper to buy a frame, ha! If you haven’t seen it, you should check out Mateusz Urbanowicz’s multi-part pochade box making video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHe9oXygq5p5sLs. Also insanity!

Great video but you have left out a very important part of making the box how you enamel the insides of the box?
@JaredCullum Жыл бұрын
I mention it. I use a 2 part epoxy paint with a 2-part epoxy primer. There are a variety of brands. I have used klass kote in the past. More than likely it's cheaper to pay a professional to coat it if you're proud of the box you make than to buy the equipment it takes to spray. Although, klass kote can be used with a thinner in a loadable spray bottle. You have to have a good mask, though. hope that helps.

Can you give a hint about how you put the enamel on the mixing surface?
@JaredCullum5 жыл бұрын
Chaya Kali I’ll tell you whatever you want to know but i can’t answer for how other people do theirs. :) I used a 2 part epoxy. Scuff the surface with sand paper and then put on a 2-part epoxy primer. When that cured I sprayed the white 2 part on top. I used a loadable spray can. The jar has measurements to get the 1 to 1 ratio right. The epoxy company has instructions. Google Klass koat epoxy sprays. They tell you how much hardener and paint to use and how much thinner needs to be mixed in to work in spray form. It’s terribly dangerous to breathe so you have to have a mask.
