The additional shafts with master pins actually compromise the security of the lock. For instance, if there are 3 shafts with master pins, this means that there are 8 possible keys that can open the lock, instead of just 2 keys with the single shaft containing the master pin.

You are correct in this assessment. The security of a lock with any level of master keying is lessoned by the addition of the master pins.

@@securityman6666 But more master pins allow for finer tuning of access permissions, right? E.g someone has access to one room, someone to the whole floor, someone to the whole building.

@@nyri0 True, but if I'm a burglar I could probably show up with a bunch of random similar keys and there's a bigger chance I can break in. Didn't do the math of what those chances are but I guess the point is the same
@possiblyzslot838
@possiblyzslot838 Жыл бұрын
@@nyri0 Also take into account some lazy key designs. You might've heard plenty of stories or had an experience yourself where a key works on a door that it shouldn't. That was the case with my school and it's not so unbelievable because of the sheer amount of different permission keys and doors that existed in the single building.

Fun facts about locks: most locks have 5 different shafts in the lock. Some have 6. Different manufacturers have different numbers of pins. Ie Taymor and schlage have pins 0 to 9. Where as some of the weiser locks use 0 to 6. if you look on the side of your keys you can sometimes see a 5 or 6 digit number. Its the number that corresponds to the pins in your lock. different numbers are different sizes of pins. 0 being the smallest and 9 being the biggest. Thats all for now. Maybe ill think of more that i have seen and put them in another video.

So when a master key exists in a building, all the locks are identical except for one small part of them. So anyone can enter any door as long as they make a slight alteration to their already existing key, which they can compare to the keys of other apartments in the same building and find which parts are the same and which part is different.

I remember I was at a elementary school during 5th grade. My teacher somehow had a master key that opens up most of the doors of the school. The door was locked and she decided to open the door and I worked! And tested the key with other doors and and it worked. My my uncle had a neighbor who has the same key profile coincidentally. So when I just saw this video I now understand why how my teacher was lucky enough to have a master key. Good Times back in the 90s Good Times. She never stole anything. Really good woman.

The Yale key, other than pushing the pins in the lock to the right height, also has a concave ridge on its sides. As matter of fact, any wrong key can enter the cylinder and not turn, or will not enter at all. That is caused by the ridge, and double the number of combinations for a given set of pins Thanks for the video...

Yale does have a "Keymark" series of high-security side-milled keys but the concept predates their design by many years. ASSA (which now owns Yale) has had their Sidebar system for a few decades.

You've probably never stopped to think how many door frames, doors, hinges, lock and passage sets, panic hardware(panic bar), door closers, floor sweeps, thresholds (exterior) that are in a building I left this job in 1996 and I can't for the life of me remember how a tumbler lock works, lol I've been watching LPL but I thought I'd brush up on the basics. Yep, you're right. I think to get a useful master key system you need to create a completely new shear line by adding a master pin to every existing driver. Can I respectfully suggest a correction in your video? When describing the master key system your video shows the head shape of a Quickset, Schlage and an ASSA key. The milling (keyway) of these 3 different keys would not allow them to work within the same lock shown so it would not be a functional master key system.

thanks bro, someone mess up the lock at my door and I could not get in. Good thing I had a back door and now I took down the lock and I'm trying to understand how it works. Normally I would enter the key with the sharp things pointing above, but now that is switched and they need to go pointing down. The thing is that the key only half enters this way. And I actually made it work, with a paper clip, lol
