It was a split of a second decision for Kohli, but his instinctual cover drive posture helped him to generate enough force with the bat while being on backfoot let him stand firm without loosing his balance. This is no fluke, the man is playing the sport for a dacade now, ofcourse he didn't think about it during the match but his subconscious knew the shorter boundary and he delivered. King for a reason.

That is why I would like to call this shot a fluke. Like in video games when we hit a "matka" 1 shot deagle headshot unintentionally. Everything was perfect about this shot otherwise it would not have gone for a six. I have never seen any player play a shot like this in their entire cricketing career. This shot was just meant to be it was just class and fate coming together on that day.

as a self proclaimed expert in cricket video games since 1990s, i can assure you that this shot is almost impossible to execute in any of the games even at normal difficulty level. the only way i can see it happening is if you max up your attributes and hit it to the lowest ranked bowler at the easiest level in EA cricket 07 with 20 percent probability.

Stop lying so called self proclaimed expert. There is no such animation of horizontal bat Straight lofted shot in any cricket game ever including the most latest by ant studios - cricket 22. So the question of executing such a shot never arises when such thing is not even coded in the game in the first place. In EA cricket 07 the straight lofted Backfoot shot is done with a vertical bat animation. That doesn't count.

Haris usually bowls around 145-150 kph and his slower deliveries are in 130s, so that also helped as it is medium pace, many top bowlers usually bowls with such pace, take Bhuneshwar Kumar for example, not pacy but has a very good line and length and he bowls with such pace. From 150 to 130 kph, it is still 20kph slower than his usual deliveries, and Haris did nothing wrong there, it was jus the moment we have to witness and what a great moment it was. Heartbroken as a Pakistani but if it took a Virat masterclass to win that game, I have no complaints.

There's one very important yet crazy thing about this shot. We call it a back foot shot and yet at the point of impact his backfoot is in the air moving sideways. The front foot is braced and the backfoot is in the air, body is arching back and yet Virat looks still. It is a shot that bio mechanically seems improbable and yet it sails over the bowlers head for a six comfortably. That shot will be etched in our memories for ever.

This shot beats many of his shots..... The one he slogged over extra cover against James Faulkner at Mohali. The slog cover drive he played against Keshrik Willams in 2019. The one he played over mid wicket off Chris Woakes in 2017 at Pune. The slog extra cover drive he played against M Statrc during WC2019. and many more.....

The first instinct I had when he played the shot was - long off fielder comes running in and Kohli caught at long off.. and then I see the ball sailing into the stands.. omg- where did he get the power in that shot from. His backfoot isn’t stable , the weight is not on front foot , the body is not behind the ball.. incredible!!!

"Shot of the Century" A year ago, you crafted a wonderful script for that remarkable shot, felt like watching a short movie with every bit of flavor in it, the intro, the buildup, the climax and lastly the punch of the hero "The King". And finally now after one year, the ICC declared the title of this movie "Shot of the Century". Thanks for this amazing voyage.

When virat is batting well and the situation is relatively pressure less , You can see his eyes enjoying , The aura around him is calm. When the chips are down and he is against a wall but still standing , you can see a void in that helmet , dark and cold , bustling with grit . Most bowlers in the world fear the latter . The former is a bad day at the ground , the latter is a set up for a humiliation of some sort , what kind is up to virat.

It’s brilliant analysis, how you dissected it and explained the backstory in slow motion. Most people just appreciate the shot but it’s more than that. What lead Virat to play that shot based on who is bowling, dimensions of MCG, in World Cup, against Pakistan, pressure situation and 28 off 8 needed etc etc... It’s the overall context leading up to the this particular shot that makes it extraordinary. Great work Jarrod Kimber. 👏👏👏

This shot deserved a dissection. I've never seen any player play that shot to short of length ball aimed at the ribs. Every instinct - instinct which you have built watching 100s of hours of cricket - tells you it cannot travel very far. But it did. Thats the beauty of that shot.

28 from 8 Kohli has to find a boundary against Rauf. Kohli stands his ground , straight down the ground. He lifted it up , " THAT IS A SHOT OF AN EMPEROR ". A straight six down the ground... to the back cloaking on the seats . 68 from 49 balls Virat Kohli 2 sixes and 6 fours . He still needs something of this delivery , 22 of 7. Rauf in at him , Kohli lifts it up to fine leg and it carries to six . The man is a genius . " HE'S NOT JUST A KING , HE'S A GENIUS ".

Brilliant analysis. The other thing to note is why didn't Harris bowl a yorker? No doubt, that would have been in Kohli's contemplation at the time of delivery. The thing with Kohli is that he would have read the length of the ball immediately at the time it left the bowler's hand. Kohli would have either gone back into his crease and turned that yorker into a half-volley which he would have dispatched over long on/long off OR he would have used the depth of the crease to send the ball over fine leg. These are the shortest boundaries at the MCG which Harris knew he had to protect. I suspected that Harris thought his best bet was to bowl a slightly short of a length delivery on a sluggish wicket and get Kohli to muscle the ball over deep mid-wicket which is a gigantic distance at the MCG. 99% of batsman would have done exactly that and most of them would probably get caught given the size of the ground. However, Kohli was still able to send that short of a length ball on a sluggish pitch over long on for six. In order to play that shot, off that delivery, on that pitch you have to have to be able to transfer your weight to the backfoot very fast, you have to be able to manipulate the movements in your wrists, elbows and shoulders without disturbing your balance whilst maintaining incredible dexterity over the shot. Harris knew Kohli was going to target the long on/long off boundaries. Harris deliberately gave Kohli the hardest delivery he would possibly give to hit over the long on/long off boundary and yet Kohli still managed it. You cannot train this. This is just pure, raw, unadulterated skill.

One thing that you didn't talk about was strength needed to clear the boundry. I think kohli has a strong core. This shot shows that. You rightly pointed out that kohli was not on firm footing and that would have affected his timing, but it didn't because he held himself steady enough for the duration of the shot and use the follow through the generate the power. This shot is up there with Sachin's six over point to Akhtar.
