Yes. Go to the properties of the wifi adapter in windows. Go to configure. Go to advanced. Go to preferred band. Select the 2.4GHZ band. That will make it less likely for you to lose your connection due to something being in between the router and your antenna.

Regarding 2.4 vs 5GHz, I recommend using Band Steering rather than separate networks. That way, your devices can negotiate which frequency to use based on signal integrity. You get 1 SSID, and most modern devices will be able to intelligently switch what they use depending on the signal quality where they are at that time.

On upgrading the WiFi card in the laptop: some laptop manufacturers implement a whitelist of allowed devices, like Lenovo does with some of their laptop series (not sure which models are affected). It's not impossible, but it requires some serious tinkering for countering that particular measure

I'm a network technician with a degree in Networking. Here is a protip for those using wifi: WiFi Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the only non-overlapping wifi channels on the 2.4GHz spectrum. Try to use those channels.

Stable internet is way better than shabby signal. I bought mesh wifi orbs that only let me extend the 2.5ghz network. My wifi router supports 5ghz and my ISP provides 250Mbps, but it's far away from my bedroom. With these orbs, I get a stable speed of about 80-90 Mbps in every room, which is much better than sudden disconnects.

Me with Ethernet, hm yes I can feel the speed. But seriously, if anyone who use laptop near a router I would highly suggest to buy a Ethernet cable, it's cheap and super effective. (Cat 5e or cat 6 depends on your network plan speed) u won't regret it, ping drops like hell, no more lags. I bought a 20m cable and drill a hole though my room lol but it was worth it.

Don't buy CAT 5. CAT 5 maxes out at 100Mbps. Buy either CAT 5e or CAT 6. I would go with CAT 6 at the very least nowdays. Try to get CAT 6a though. Trust me, as I have a degree in Networking.

Wow!! I didn't know we could do this. Thanks I bought the dell g5 se after consulting with you on twitter. 3 days after the purchase it showed a battery problem and a hinge problem. Now my question is that should I replace the entire laptop or just the faulty parts. I am aware that Dell may use refurbished parts as mentioned in the policy and I didn't buy a new laptip to get refurbished parts. Most important thing is to get routers with SMQ and other anti-bufferbloat features to reduce stuttering and lag in latency sensitive apps like multiplayer games or voice over ip. Makes a world of difference familly and roomates can stream or torrent while you are gaming without you rubber banding ingame!

I found that after I upgraded my WiFi card that I couldn't connect to my previously paired Bluetooth devices or unpair them. I had to put my old card back in, unpair every device, upgrade again and repair my devices to get them to work. I got much better Bluetooth and WiFi speeds after upgrading.

Tip 11: find a (way to switch to a) new ISP. Sometimes the offerings are awful and in some cases it's straight up impossible to reach more reasonable speeds (the case of my friend).
