yet the DDR5 "tax" is so big that you're going to spend like +30-40% off the laptop price if you compare 2021 and 2022 generations. There seems to be a version with 8gb soldered + 8gb stick installed. This can be compared to the 16gb soldered version. If the GPUs are different then you can test with the dGPU disabled and only on the iGPU. Should give a fairly decent look into memory channel differences.

Thanks for testing this for us. I believe a test with 16gb (soldered) + 32gb stick should have been done as well. Your results could have been just driven by the amount of ram. I believe due to the RAM channels still being 128 bit, it means that the memory bandwidth stays the same. The only reason to split the channels into smaller channels in DDR5 is likely just a way to increase clock speeds even further / have looser timings possible (quad pumping)
@svampebob0072 жыл бұрын
I think this is an awe full trend to set. it's like saying a 16xPCI-E gen 5 is running on 80xPCI-E. thus you can market your CPU to have "160 PCI-E lanes!*" *pratically :) I know it's not exactly the same comparison, but for me as a circuits guy, I think there's a huge difference between a true 64+8bit vs two 32+8bit lanes. Do I feel DDR5 isn't doing it right? absolutely not, I welcome the change, my issue is how AMD claims 4 channels when it clearly only has two 64bit data lanes to use. in almost every single instance it's not an issue and would practically behave like a quad channel set up. but once you start deviating from the norm, the difference between a true quad 64bit system and a 4x32+8 can be vastly different. personally I'm still rocking a ddr4 quad channel 8 dim mobo, and it's solid as a rock.... although compared to what I could buy now days it's trying it's best to be relevant😬

This is good stuff. Do you have any stats on the performance for DDR5 if the sizes of the RAMS are different? Like an 8gb sol paired with 16gb or a 16gb sol paired with a 32 gb? The previous generation with the DDR4 although boasted of the 'flex' tech, was recommended to be kept at the same amount as the soldered one for gaming due to the dip in performance. I mean dual channel 32bit is the same a single channel 64bit. so yeah I would think going from dual channel to quad would give a performance boost.

You should also test it in other laptops with a stronger GPU and at 1080p too

If a single DDR5 stick then PCs with 4 memory sticks are running in octa channel WOW

the question now is if a laptop running 2 ddr5 stick is considered quad then a PC should be called mega channel?? because PC can run 4 stick dual-channel! and what if intel run 2 stick ddr5 is it considered as quad because in their spec is limited to dual channel
