Actually I only ment full weapons load. Our current F-18 is +9G but loaded +3G or something. Wings can't sustain and manouverability with full load. F18 is a weapons load mule.

This plane will take on any Su-27-Su35 any day of the week. The E version will take on the Su57 with no problem in a defensive role. It may not match its competitors in the offensive role but for Finland i dont think that mattes. Either the E or F35 wins the HX fighter competition. Finland and Sweden will cooperate in defensive matters so if F35 wins it will bring new capabilities to the table, if Gripen wins it will have its advantages too. Either way im sure the Finnish people will make the decision thats right for them. Gl and have fun :)

Finland could have the JAS39 to, but Elisabeth Rhen Finnish defense minister 1990-95 (from the Finnish Sweden people party) was no friend to Swedish industry but she blame Peter Wallenberg and SAAB for hard industry political pressure from Sweden to buy JAS39, i bet the industry political pressure for F-18 Hornet was much harder and stronger from USA.

The Finnish air force had the same air defense doctrine as Sweden air force to hide the plan out in the countryside to use the road networks perhaps in 15-20 different places but with F-18 thats was no can do. With the F-18 they have to extend their main air bases with more than double the length at a high cost's and was now down to perhaps 3-5 bases to use for F-18. Finnish air force bought the J-35 Draken (40-50) planes 1972-76 and they now the performance of JAS-37 Viggen, so there was no concern for what the performance JAS-39 will have when the plane system was ready to sell in 1996. One or two engines is an Finnish politikan smoke screen it was for defence not any deep penetration attacks in hostile country when you perhaps prefer two engines and the cold war was over so there was no hurry for Finland to by any new planes.

Yes and you must be abel to takeoff with the plane as well and F-18 need at least 600 meters and Finland dont have any straight road part with that length so give up the this talk with F-18 as an logical solution for Finland it was an super stupid deal but it make som Finnish politicians to shine beside some US dignitaries.

Sorry i was wrong about the starting distance its about 400 meters not 600 for the F-18, the data for 600 meters is from debate article from political debate about pros and cons to by F-18 from the 90s. I should have known better when F-18 is an navy plane. I remember the JAS 39 the accident at the Stockholm Water Festival 1993 it was a big political mistake from the sitting government to let the plane show fly that year they should have wait at least two years for it. But it was a big debate in the media for those rising costs so i think it was pure panic from the government. But to make an omelet you need to crack some eggs, for a new aircraft system like JAS39 i think they have new low record for accidents in the development process onely 3 times.

@@Gharzul: Doesn't really matter. The F-22 is three times the price of the upcoming E/F. You can fly three times the sorties and have more uptime, Meteor and IRIS-T missiles. You'd be stupid not to call that an advantage. Flight hour cost for an F-22 is like 10-15 times a JAS-39 E/F. Maintenance for F-22 is 22h per flight hour. JAS 39 E/F is 1 per flight hour... A few high end weapons standing on the ground does not make an airforce.
